I just received my gyro and S9253 servo and am setting it up. My questions:
In the instructions I set up the sensitivity switch using the channel 5
switch, since I am just getting out of hover into slow forward flight and am
not ready to set up idle up settings. I'm still trying to get everything
tweaked correctly. The instructions state to fly the helicopter in the
normal (AVCS off) mode. Okay, so if I'm not mistaken, the now inhibited revo
settings won't automatically dial in approximate rudder trim to compensate
for torque, and I fear an uncontrollablr helicopter when I lift off. Am I
correct in this assumption and what should I do to keep the pucker factor
down? BTW, I was using a piezo gyro and have decided to step up quickly.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can shed.

I think you'll find that gyro will hold the tail much better than your older piezo gyro would even in normal mode. I fly with all CSM 540 gyros and sometimes I forget and leave them in normal mode when I fly. I can't tell the difference till I try backwards or sideways flight.

I've flown helis with 401s in them and even with no revo mixing the tail will hold very well in normal mode also.

Once the normal mode is set, use either. AVCS (HH mode) does make it easier but not really that much to worry about. Before I did forward flight, I did all my hovering and side flying in both modes.

Brad, I fly all 401 and now a couple of 601 gyros.

There is a reason for this setup procedure.

step 1: Start by triming the heli with the gyro in the off/normal mode, It well act like a normal gyro that needs to be trimed. Once you have the tail in trim in normal mode, Do not turn it to the on/HH mode! This will make you think it is not working if you do, instead, land and shut down the system (safe way)

step 2: after you trimed the heli in normal mode and shut down the system, turn you radio back on, switch on the heading hold switch, then turn on the heli with it in a still stable position. the gyro will blink for a few seconds then stop with the light on. This sets the HH lock. turn the swith back to off. (use this as your start up procedure every time you start the heli)

step 3: Start the machine, go out and hover it with the hh off. It will still be in trim for step 1. flip the hh switch and it is locked in HH mode! and will not move unless you use input from the radio. (do not try to trim it in HH mode!!)

Thats it! hope it helps

NOTE: remember to reset the HH after you first start the heli because, if you dont and carry it out the the lauch pad, as soon as it lifts off the ground, it will spin to try to find the location of where it was when you turned it on.

Jeff
