I had a maiden flight for my Aqua Star last Friday.
The weather was the best I ever had before, no wind, no waves
on the water like a mirror.
Norvel .06 run well, but I didn't measure the rpm since I set the
mixture rich due to that the engine was new.
The prop was 6x3, fuel 30% nitro and 26% synthetic oil.
I took off the plane forward so as to make lateral control easier.
The Aquastar got planing easy and I pull the elevator.
It lifted off when it had a tip stall and got back to the water with
its attitude up side down.
I couldn't see the airspeed precisely when it lifted off since I was
seeing it from right behind, but it seemd my Aquastar required
more speed to lift off safely. I don't know the problem could be
solved if I waited more before the lift off or I need a stronger engine.
I run the engine again, but it was unstable. I found some leakage
from the plug head, the plug head seemed a bit loose.
I didn't bring the rench to tighten the head so I couldn't try again
that day(I realized after I came back home that a Cox rench can
be used for Norvel .060 head).
My friend accidentally brought the same plane with TT .07, weighs
200g lighter than my Aquastar and it flew nice. He added only a
chine on the front fuselage, covered with film and original 3CH.
I will try again the other day, but 700g weight seems to be a big
problem. Norvel .060 seemes OK with 100% synthetic oil.

Even after all the criticism of this kit, I've persuaded myself to buy one. Reason #1 being that the price in $ is less than that of £ i.e. half.
I was also wondering, in an attempt to keep the weight down, has anyone tried closed loop for the rudder as it would save the weight of a pushrod??
I've flown a few waterplanes...Puppeteer, Ready 2, Jupiter (float conversion with ARC floats), and am busy rebuilding a Seamaster that someone tried to covert back to kit form, so I'm looking forwards to this piece of work

This guy did a pull-pull conversion on one. http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:QQZs75ufYh0J:www.pivot.net/~acarr/ron/aquastar.htm+aquastar+pull+pull&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us I'd do it, but I don't like how the servos are screwed to the outside of the plane. Plus then you have extension leads to worry about. I had planned on just using Nyrod. What do you think about a T tail for more elevator authority, which would help keep the nose up until it gets up on step?

I don't think I'd have my servos on the outside, i'd prefer to keep them dry. I was thinking of routing the control cables through the upprer rear decking of the fuz via "S" shaped thin alloy tubing. i've done it before and it worked well. However this chap looks like he flies off snow and not water, so maybe it ain't an issue for him.
So by using this mod for the rudder and like you suggest a snake for the "T-Tail" elev routed like the seamaster, should keep the weight away from the tail...this of course is all moot as the kit ain't even been delivered yet, however i will post pictures when the build starts
