Acquired this plane from a guy that got out of the hobby years ago. It is 2/3 constructed and since the weather here in Iowa has turned crummy I thought I would get back to working in the shop. It got me thinking of what to use for engine and thought I would post to see if anyone has owned this plane. Any general thoughts on set up or CG would be appreciated. I was thinking of using a Super Tiger 3250 or ST3000 which are both new in the box that also came with my purchase. Anybody have thoughts on what kind of performance those combinations would give? Thanks

Brady

I had the same model and flew it with a gas Cheetah 42DX from Reid Models and then installed a Brison 3.2. Both worked well. The Brison gave it more aerobatic capability but the 42DX was good scale. Unfortunately it was totaled when a battery failed.

As far as I can recall Ibought it from another builder)-balance it per the plans. I did not do anything special-strictly stock from the kit.

Do you know of any others around-I'd really like to build another. It's a great airplane. Here is a picture of mine:

Good Luck,

Bob

I have the plans for the ace weeks special. If you are willing to pay for shipping both ways you can borrow them as long as I get them back in a timely fashion. If I am not mistaken, stans fibertech or some fabrication company still offer the cowl for it. I had one for a while and really liked it. I sold it on RCU quite some time ago to move into the Sukhoi which is my favorite plane.

Brady,

The ACE Weeks Special was one of the best planes that I ever had. Mine was powered by a Zenoah G-62 which I highly recommend. The photos were made at the Grand Prairie TX airport several years ago.

Congratulations, Brady, I'm just a little jealous! The Weeks Special is in my opinion a great flying bi-plane, and also my favorite. I powered mine with an A&M Sachs (now Brison) 3.2 and it was spectacular with the smoke on, going straight up, then falling back through the smoke! I lost mine to aileron flutter. I built mine from the original designer, Miles Reed, the replacement is waiting for me to build the top wing, the fuse is built, and the bottom wing is done needs shaping and mounting on the fuse. Mine weighed 19 lbs.

Good luck, it's a wonderful flying plane!

Bigger always flys better!

I will start my Ace Weeks Special today by removing the formers from the plywood and identifying them with a marking pen.

If anyone has experience building this kit. All information and photos will be appreciated.

Power will be Zenoh G380 my first gasser. Any comments on this engine will be appreciated.

Some confusion on D-3 fuse former.

Thanks for the info. My first attempt at posting pictures here so hopefully it shows up. Can't wait to finish this one up. Should be one sweet plane.

Brady,
Your picture is great. Could you tell me how and what you used to make the Cabane? Is it soldered?

Brady, one suggestion. Fiberglass the center section of the top of the upper wing. A friend was doing knife edge snaps with his and the top wing broke right down the center section joint of the top wing. The ca-bane strut concentrates forces on the bottom of the upper wing. I fiberglassed mine and didn't have a problem.

Robert,
The construction up to this point was done by a guy that I purchased this plane from. Are you talking about the ca-bane strut in the center? It is made of music wire and soldered. I think. I can take a better picture of it tonight and post later.

Ken,
Thats a great point. I am not sure why I didn't think of it but it would probably be wise to fiberglass that center section. Did you also fiberglass the center section on the bottom wing?

Thank you Brady.
Looks like I'll have to master soldering. A picture would be appreciated.

Brady, I don't think it is necessary to fiberglass the bottom center section of the upper wing but it couldn't hurt. If you break a piece of balsa over your knee, it will split on the top first. Tension on the top of the wing and compression on the bottom of the wing. The bottom wing is supported by the fuselage sides and probably doesn't need fiberglassing.

Robert,
I took a few pictures. Looks like it will only allow me to do one at a time. Must be the size.

Last one. That last pic didn't focus as well as I would have liked. It looks like a smaller guage of wire was wrapped around the joints and soldered. It seems to be very sturdy.

Thank you Brady,
The pictures say a thousand words.
I put the first drop of glue on my Weeks Special. I don't expect to get much done as we are leaving next week for a Summer aboard our boat in Puget Sound. We won't be back until October.
I'll be watching your thread.

Brady,

The Ace Week's Special is a very nice flying airplane. I built two of them about 10 years ago. The one I kept for myself is done up in Sean D. Tucker Randolph Sunglasses scheme. Both of them are powered by G-62's and still flying to date.

I would highly recommend using 4 ailerons. Mine fluttered, however, I was fortunate enough to land it and install the top two. I noticed an earlier post of a loss due aileron flutter.

I will post a picture as soon as I figure out how.

Blue skies and fair winds,

3DFlight,
Thats a great looking color scheme. Do you have any other pics of a top view. I kind of like black color schemes. I'm planning on using 4 ailerons. I noticed that your vertical stab is angular instead of rounded. Was this a mod you changed or perhaps the specific plane you modeled yours after has that stab?

I like the red white and blue scheme but am a little intimidated with all of those stars and stripes. I am unfamiliar with the history of the Miles Reed Weeks. Do you know of any other schemes or how many of these aircraft were or still are out there?

I've got some time for final decision on engine. A gasser would be sweet. Did you put a smoke system in yours? My Super Tiger 3250 that came with the plane is a lot less expensive than a new gas engine. Haven't gone down that road yet. Probably should take the plunge.

Brady

Brady,

Nice looking plane, I too like black schemes. Just gotta keep them covered up in sun. Mine does has a smoke system (home made pump system and a Slimline muffler) and looks great in the air. When I get home this evening I will try to find a picture of the top of the airplane. Although I can tell you that the top wing has a blue stripe running tip to tip with Randolph Engineering Sunglasses in white lettering. The bottom wing has a red stripe tip to tip.

I modeled the tail of the aircraft after Sean D. Tucker's full sized biplane and built the wing tips square at 72" span. He used to stop by the airport that I worked at in the early 1990's and I got to know him. The extra rudder area and elevator make it very responsive. It will easily perform a true knife edge loop. As I said the two I built both G-62's, but I have flown others. One with a ST G4500 flew very well and the other with a Moki 2.10.

As far as paint schemes, the only one I know of is the red, white and blue that is on Kermit's full size and was flown in competetion by Linda Meyers.

Blue skies & fair winds,

3DFlight

Not a very hi res photo, but gives an idea of the overall scheme. Red and blue strip on bottom wing, red strip and blue square on top wing with Randolph Sunglasses in white.

I have my Weeks all framed since March and have stalled a bit now that it’s flying season. Mine is the ACE kit as well if you could call it that. It wasn’t a hard build just a lot of work on the scroll saw. As of right now, I plan on covering it the Kermit Weeks red, white, and blue scheme.

Has anyone used one of the after market cowls for this plane? The one from Ace is really heavy and I have already shaved several pounds from the build and really do not want to use this cowl. Looking for a lightweight fiberglass cowl for it.

Ken
