    Brushed motor power level control has very smooth start up and can often be turned down to a very slow rotation. One of the first brushless motors for R/C applications used sensors inside the motor to detect rotor position and send it to the brushless controller. This provided an incredible slow start up with predictable feel. When the brushless power systems lost their sensors to reduce cost and complexity as well as allow interchangability between manufacturers, they all started up with a slight jiggle to sense the rotor position based upon back EMF before starting up. Once started, the motor control works smoothly enough.

    Try pulling the videos from review which is now published on RC Universe at the link below. The Hitec Laser 4 radio system is top quality and could be used on any giant scale application without interference. The radio system will control the plane much farther than the eye can see it in the air.

    Status: offline     		Greg, I'm considering the Magister because it's big basically. Foam is nice too. The stock set up in your video seemed to come right up off of grass. I have the Multiplex Cargo that has four 400 motors weights around 4.5lbs and is likely made of the same material and I really like it. It shoots off the ground.

    Would either plane come off of water with floats? I'd really like a set up on floats.
    Would the 8cell 3300 NiMh have any more power or just longer run?
    Is there room in this plane for 9cell 3300NiMh? More power and longer run on stock ESC.

    Next step would be two 2100mah 3cells as I already have one and an ESC to handle it.

    Tower Hobbies sells the whole power system as a replacement here. They list a 6mm adapter so probably a collet-style adapter like those sold at Hobby Lobby would work fine.

    I suppose it might come off water in stock form but you would really want the ESC/Lithium upgrade to reduce weight and increase power. I don't have any experience with the Multiplex Cargo but I have heard that it is powerfu so that it can carry a decent load. There is plenty of room for a 9-cell pack but you'll still need to upgrade the ESC since its limit is 8 cells.

    The two 2100mah packs in parallel would also make a nice hop-up with great duration.

    I bought the Parkflyers Edge 540T instead of the Magister. I think I might have bit more than I can chew at this time.

    Anyway, I had my maiden flight today. I hand tossed it. It was like riding a wild horse! It was a totally jerky flight with the plane going every which way any time I tried to control it. I just took it way up and slowed it down until I was able to control it much better. It was also a little too windy! Brought it down the best I could after about 5 minutes with a rough landing but no damage at all.

    My second flight I hand tossed it at 1/2 throtle and that went a lot smoother. Still jerky movements, trying to make it go the way I wanted to go. Again, being windy did not help. This time I brought it down very nicely, it just floated on its way down.

    I'm sure the Magister would have been a lot easier to fly. But, I hope I get to learn to fly the 540T soon without all the stress and anxiety!!! Relaxation is what I'm after with this hobby!!

    Relaxation and Edge 540 don't belong in the same sentence.

    If the transmitter does not have dual rates then try reducing the control gain mechanically.

    At the servo arm, the linkage goes toward the center for reduced gain. At the control horn, the linkage goes away from the control surface for reduced gain. Try moving one hole at a time and only at one end at a time.

    Status: offline     		So running the Magister with the Stock BEC ESC and Motor...what is the best battery I can buy to get the most out of it??? I have a feeling it will either be an 8/3000mAh or an 8/3300mAh. Though the latter may bit a bit too heavy?? In the future I will upgrade the Motor and ESC so I can run it on Lithium batts but for now I don't have the funds to do that so a battery change is my only option...Any recommendations for me? The stock battery that it comes with looks like the one in Greg's original review so I presume it's an 8 cell / 1900mAh and really doesn't seem to give the motor that much power and it certainly doesn't allow for a very decent flight time...
    The manual suggests to buy another battery which is an 8/3000mAh. So maybe this is the best one to go for?? Does it matter if you run an 8.4V motor with a 9.6V batt??

    When the manual was written, the 3000mAh NiMH was likely the hot cell. Now, it is up to 3700mAh NiMH. Any one will work fine but you'll likely get a better price on the older cells from 3000-3300mAh. The big difference is in the battery technology jump from NiCd to NiMH. In the future, you can jump again from NiMH to Lithium.

    The 8.4v rating of the motor is only nominal operating voltage, not maximum.

    It's quite heavy at 518grams, but the magi should cope with no probs. After all it is meant to be able to tow gliders etc...

    Status: offline     		I was given the chore to test fly this machine and the only negative thing to comment on was the lack of power the electric motor provided. In-flight it behave like most high wing trainers.
    Landing and taking off are uneventful. Due to the motors' low output takeoff runs are in excessive of twohundred feet.

    Status: offline     		I made this comment to the owner of the plane an he agreed. An avid electric modeler at the field who whitnessed the flight suggested a replacement motor to the owner. The owner questioned this individual about cost and hes was told about $150.00 USD. When the owner heard this his reply was I can't afford it. This is not the first underpowered electric model I have seen fly at our location. It is my opinion that most over the counter electric airplanes lack performance. I have seen to many of these crash because of lack of power.

    Status: offline     		I have the edge 540t by parkflyers. It is a great plane, but there is a serious range problem. starts glitching about 700ft out. Did a range test, and it is very poor. I have writen Parkflyers and am waiting for a responce....
