Hey Buzz,
Man, what a great job! I am proud to be a fellow GMA member with you guys AND a 215 owner too. My 215 is running top notch now. We need to load up our field with our radials...yours, your dads, mine and Pedro's and get them all in the air at the same time. As your dad said, "if I were there, I would just pack up my stuff and leave!"

See you Monday for maiden day

Rex

Rex,
Thanks for the kind words! I am also so proud of GMA and its leadership, your contributions have been a great compliment to a first class club!I hope this School Bus flys well. How is you German FW flying? If all goes well with these Stearmans we will have 4 radials at the field!

Hi Buzz kill,
Love your Stearman. Just an FYI, if your going to Joe Nall you need to make sure that you have at least 6 flights on the Stearman. They require that all aircraft have at least 6 flights on them be fore being flown @ the Joe Nall. Hope this helps.

Saul,
Thanks for the information. I will be flying the Stearman for the first time on Monday. If all goes well and I have no major problems I should be able to get at least 25 flights with it before Nall. My Ercoupe has 60+ on it so she is good to go. Thanks again for the needed information!

Buzz

I had the pleasure of watching an BUSA Stearman with the 5 cyl 215 fly today. This aircraft is OLD, and was flown before with a homebuilt 5 cyl using Saito Cyls, but it now sounds and flys as scale as anyone would want. Using the DX7 radio the response is outstanding. It is a "floater" and has a HUGE speed envelope with total control. Everyone at the field stood down just to watch this plane in flight......Built right it is a WINNER.....

This Stearman is flown by Kevin Cubbison of KELEO Custom MUflers, so he is a flier who knows modeling. Not a plug for him, but he is an RCer who is involved in the sport, hobby. If you need a custom installation, give him a call and he'll talk your ear off..........a good guy

Just picked up a NIB Balsa USA Stearman from this web-site. Now I will have a kit waiting for me when I have time to get on it. I'll use the RCS215 that is on my 33% Waco for power. If you have time to wait like I did you can get this really nice kit at about 60% of the cost of buying from manufature. Makes buying and outfitting this plane a lot less costly, if there is such a thing in this sport.

Well,
I have now logged 10 flights on the Stearman and the last 3 have been flawless. I had a few problems with the fuel tank, flying wire brackets, smoke pump, and the stits finish but all have been solved. My Dad's Stearman has performed perfectly with no issues. We are now loaded and ready for our first Joe Nall. Here are some pictures from Thursday.

Buzz, just wanted to say that I attended my first Joe Nall last week and your planes were outstanding. I never did get the chance to talk to you but I did get a close look at all the detail in those Stearmans and really enjoyed seeing you guys fly in formation. Thanks for sharing all your build information with us. Jerry.

Jerry,
Thanks for the kind words! This was my first Nall ever and I was blown away by all of the planes, hospitality, and the facility. I wish we could have connected to chat while we were there but we can connect next year. Are you currently building a stearman?

Buzz

Hey Buzz, this was my first year also. I flew in from Colorado to check it out and the next time I come I'm loading up the trailer and flying off that fantastic field. I'm curently flying a Aeroworks Stearman with a Saito Radial. Not sure my building skills are to the level where I could build one of those big Stearmans. Great looking plane though, really impressed. Take care, Jerry.

I wish you all the best with the building of your new Stearman.

It is realy a pity to crash such a nice plane on that way "radio problem".

Regards,

Cesar.

Hello Buzz
Just about finished one of these USA Stearmans, I'm a little worried about the flying wires on the wings & tail plane have you found they get metal fatigue & break. my mates reckon I should use 150lb stainless steel fishing trace plastic coated.
I like your web page thanks for going to the effort of doing it for us mad modellers.
I also ordered Seira struts, mine has a 160 ZDZ for power.
Regards
Ross Smith

Hi Ross, I too am building the big Stearman. If you have concernes about the flying wires you can use the fishing leader that you talk about. I ordered some "wire rope" from Balsa USA for my 33% Waco. It is very flexiable and way too strong. You can order it from Balsa USA web-site. I got the niffty little crimping tool they have to put on the swag fittings. It does the same job as on the full scale aircraft. Works well. My big Waco is a lot more aerobatic than the Stearman due to the four aleirons instead of two as on the Stearman. The wire is holding up well.

Guys,
I used the airfoil shaped flying wires from Sea Commander floats. The strength rating is off the charts and will give you confidence in your rigging. Check them out at www.seacommander.com.

Whats $400.00 when you have $8000.00 plane and hundreds of hours depending on them? I just could not see taking the chance once I had 3 of the stock wires pop loose during first time setup. The braided wire might be a sufficient alterantive if you can trust solder. Best of luck!

Well I agree on your point. But to me $400 is a lot of money. I don't make all that much on a militarey disability if you know what I mean. I haved used this cable from Balsa USA. I have viewed your pics and must say I will learn some from them.THANK YOU!!

on my big Waco and have never had a problem. It is not soldered though. It uses swag fittings and turnbuckels.
