zope_pope -> Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (5/4/2005 11:58:23 PM)

Hey Guys,
I am trying to go 3d with my DP ultimate. I have a YS 1.40 DZ mounted on it, but I live in colorado and am at 6000' altitude. I currently have a micro servo on the throttle. 4 Standard Futaba 3004s for the ailerons. A digital for the Elevator and a 1/4 Scale on the rudder.

I am looking for hints as far as props on the YS or weight saving tips for the airplane. New radio gear is definately an option here. I just want the airplane as light as possible. I would like to focus more on structrual mods though, such as new landing gear, etc. My came out around 13.5 lbs so it is a little bit on the heavy side. Please let me know. Thanks.

sorry this doesnt help out any but I would like to see a larger picture of it other than you avitar if you can[:D]

Sorry bud, I can't find any at the moment. I am running the engine this weekend to get it tuned for the flying season, I will take some pics then. :) You have my word.
It is such a beautiful airplane, so I don't blame you. [:)]

1) Ditch the wheel pants (save 4 oz)
2) Ditch the hatch access cover; just cover it w/ Ultracote (save 1 oz)
3) Use Performance Specialty 4-stroke muffler ILO Pitts 4-stroke muffler (save 2 oz)
4) Use light wheels, if you haven't already done so (can save up to 3 oz here)
5) Use light prop (save 2 oz going from APC to wood)
6) Use 4-cell AA NiMH receiver pack (save 1 oz over 5-cell, even more over the A-cell pack)

These actions should get you well below 13 lb.

You don't really need a large-case servo for rudder. A standard-case digital metal-gear would suffice. I used 5625 on my rudder, 5945 on my 2 elevators.

Stock landing gear is pretty light, so replacing it w/ CF gear will not save weight, but just reduce the springiness

I got desparate at one point, and ditch the cowl and spinner altogether. Here a video of my 12-lb. version of DPM Ultimate:

From a power stand point, I still believe that Bolly 19x6 will give you the most thrust (21-lb @10200 rpm), although at the risk of over-reving and draw-back of slower flight. Mejzlik 20x6 should be even better, and will help to mow the grass more effectively, especially with the stock springy landing gear.

Cool great ideas!! Do the bolly's spin faster than the APC props? My 18x8W APC turns 8400 or so, and just an 18x8 spins 9000. I am guessing this is because of the ailtitude. I will have to implement these ideas when I get off work.

Finally checked out that vid. Really nice. I haven't got comfortable flying my dpm yet because of an annoying glitch I hope to fix this season. Thanks for the tips, when i get some cash to replace some electronics on the plane, I will take the excess weight off and let her rip.

I have the YS 140DZ in mine. Awesome power with all the stuff on it. I use an 18x6APC prop. Some of the stuff that mentioned above will lighten it, but could add drag and take some of its looks away. It would ligthen it for sure though. Try playing with props. I'm thinking about going to a DA 50 in mine. I already put the elevator servos in the tail to begin with since I didn't like pull-pull on the elevator. It will have pure power with the DA.
Here are a couple pics of the Ultimate

I was thinking of the DA 50 as well or the zdz but that is a whole extra pound plus ignition batt, etc. Would that ruin the plane? Thats what DP told me.

mpower11 -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (5/7/2005 9:23:10 PM)

well just another suggestion, but mabye you could drill small holes in the landing gear at the straight part. Not the parts where it flexes and takes the force of the landing, but the parts just above the wheels. Who knows, the landing gear on that plane seems very strong, so a few holes might not hurt, but will make it less weight. anyways, just my 2 cents

Ryan Nau -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (5/8/2005 4:19:30 AM)

I don't think that the extra weight of the DA would hurt it. I have the Patrick 330 and he says not to go gas in that plane. But it loves it, insane power and vertical. I would be the same for the Ultimate. I think it would be awesome with the DA. Im going to fly it this year with the YS, and maybe in a few months get another DA 50 for it.

I was looking at DPM's website again and he claims the ulty comes in at 9.5 - 10.5 lbs!?!?! What is he smoking. If anyone out there has achieved this, please let us know, and how did you get it that light!

I think my DP Ultimate can achieve 9.5 lb....... AFTER I REMOVE MY ENGINE AND RADIO EQUIPMENT. Dave never said 9.5 lb. is the flying weight, did he?

zope_pope -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (5/11/2005 4:03:49 PM)

Go read the review. It States 10lbs 6 oz as ready to fly weight without fuel!!! Pretty crazy huh?

zope_pope -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (9/2/2006 7:38:25 PM)

I know we were talking about it, but did anyone ever go DA50r with this plane?

ben beyer -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (9/2/2006 9:45:19 PM)

I'd ditch the 1/4 scale servo on the rudder and use a Hitec 5985 or 5955. A JR 8611a would also work or a Futaba equivalent for that matter. You'll probably loose close to 4 oz. doing that. You may also look into CF gear.

dlwood -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (9/2/2006 10:53:45 PM)

Mine came in at 12# 4 oz with an OS 160, 18x6W prop, spinner, pants, complete.

BME has a new 55 CC engine coming out, 2.1 pounds.

I know of one with a G26, flew like crap.

A 50 CC gas on this aircraft is way over kill, even for me.

zope_pope -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (9/3/2006 2:41:12 AM)

Let me update my setup. I replaced the 1/4 scale servo with a 5645mg, ditched the tank access hatch, and removed my voltwatch and reweighed in at 12lbs 10oz. Still a little high, but I have some CF gear in the mail and am looking at mini's for the aileron and a lipo to replace my NiMH. Anyhow, I guess my question is more on the gasser's. I know you guys are thinking a gasser is overkill, but at my altitude even a very powerful YS 140DZ turning an 18x6W at 9300+ rpm isn't quite enough for 3d flight. Just looking to see if anyone else has gone gas with good results. Up here in CO if you want to 3d, you need to go electric, profile, or giant scale.

ncrego -> RE: Cutting weight on the DPM Ultimate 1.20 (9/3/2006 5:44:08 AM)

I tried a variety of engines on my DPMs, and the gas engine was the worst. I put a Brison 2.4 on it, and the power was incredible, it'd hover at a little under 1/2 throttle, and rocket out of it when I put the power up. However, the plane flew like crap, it was way too heavy. Glide performance was somewhere between the Space Shuttle and a brick, coming down final I had to keep the power at 1/4 to keep it on glide path. It no longer tracked well, and while it did high alpha manuevers fairly well, it was like a light switch, it was either going fast or crawling along in high alpha.

Basically, I took an incredibly fun, great flying airplane, and ruined it. The OS 160 was the best I tried, at the 900ft I'm at it was unlimited, but it probably wouldn't be at your altitude. Maybe something like a Moki 210, definitely not a DA, it's heavier than the Brison was, so it'd fly even worse. If you want a nice Ultimate with great performance on a DA50, check out the Great Planes ARF. I'm in the process of building one now, and it's a great plane. I've weighed everything, and it should come up to about 15 pounds without fuel, about the same as the DPM with the Brison with a lot more wing, and engine.

BTW, to save weight, lose the 1/4 scale servo, and go to minis in the wings and throttle. I had those on one of mine, and they worked great, and saved weight.
