OK, being a relative noob to the Nitro world....

I just installed a new 18TM in my Revo and got it broke in yesterday. So today I started trying to lean it out a little and get some power out of it and it seems like its getting a little warm. I ran it blubberingly rich during break in, and even just an 1/8th of a turn in from there the temps are getting up to like 265 without much noticeable gain in power. I know a lot of people say throw away the temp gun, but that seems a little warm.

At this point the engine isn't pulling much harder (if any) than the 2.5r was. Its not even puilling the tires off the ground, which I completely expected it to do.

Somebody throw me some advice please? Would a fresh glow plug make any difference?

OK I just installed a fresh glow plug and gave it another run. I leaned it out another 1/8th of a turn and still not a noticeable power difference. In fact, on a long WOT run it won't even get me into second gear. My 2.5r would even do that !

Anyway, at that setting with the new plug, there is still plenty of smoke coming from the pipe. And this time my temp was up in the 280-290 range every time I checked. And its only about 78 degrees here today. At this point I am a little disappointed with the 18TM unless I am just missing something.

And when this thing is warm its a bear to get started. I think I need to adjust the idle maybe. It seems like it needs some throttle to start.

And if it matters, I'm running the stock Revo pipe and Odonnel 20% fuel. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated !

i'm pretty sure there has got to be an air leak, cause the tm's performance is much more impressive than the 2.5r. replace all your fuel lines, and check your tank. if that doesnt work, you may need to look at where the carb and block come together.

ya, I am a believer in not using the temp gun. If you are running to rich it can leed to to hot of a temp. so lean it out for shure, I would say about 1/4 turn.

I'll try replacing all the fuel line and check the tank etc tomorrow. I knew something had to be wrong. I've heard too many good reviews on this engine to not be impressed by it !

If the problem is where the carb attaches, what is the best thing to do to seal it? Silicone gasket maker stuff?

Admittedly I'm a noob, but I don't understand how too fast of an idle could make the engine run hot. Heck mine doesn't sit still long enough to idle for very long !

I'm not a rocket surgeon, nor a brain scientist but that doesn't make any sense to me. I would have never thought a fast idle would make a engine run hot after putting it through its paces. I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying, because I'm not experienced enough to know better. I just would have never thought of that causing an overheating problem.

I installed my .18 tm two weeks ago and after break in a 1\4 turn in, this thing will bring the wheels off the ground. Both foward and in revers wheelies. Take the advice on looking for a air leak, and most of all have passion.

It rained here today so I didn't get to run the engine again. But I did take a little time to look things over. I notice a significant amount of dust/pollen/grime from my backyard accumulated around the point where the cooling head meets the case. Almost like it was sucked there. The rest of the head is relatively clean. Anyone ever had an engine leak around the cooling head? If so I would assume that the engine is permanently hosed from sucking in that crud. How frustrating.

One thing I forgot to post after my last run yesterday was that after a WOT pass, when I let off the throttle, the engine would spit and sputter and not immediately come back to idle. It stayed up in medium/low RPM range for a few seconds and then came back to idle. Is that a sign of an air leak?

I am having almost the exact same problem. I broke in the .18 a few weeks ago the thing was totally awsome I ajusted the shift point and it would wheelie into second gear. Now for the last week and a half or so the truck completely sucks. I blow through glow plugs left and right, it won't even touch second gear. I too use a temp gun and see temp in the 270 to 310 range. I'v tried every needle adjustment i could. Tonight I've had it. Can an air leak really be the culprit? I'm so bummed, up untill now this truck's been the best nitro I've ever had or seen.

I feel your pain.

I hear ya. Sweet looking ride by the way. I've got a crowd pleazer sitting here waiting for paint. I'm not going to sweat the looks until I get the beast running right though.

If I were you I'd check all those things listed above and see if you have an air leak. Maybe thats the culprit. It looks like mine leaked around the head as it came from the factory. I just hope its not toast....

Well I spoke to OS about it yesterday. They told me to tighten the head up and run it and see how things go. If its still not right he said to tear it down and clean it. And if that didn't help they would have me send it back and they would take care of it under warranty. So I'm off to my LHS to get a new gallon of fuel, new fuel line, and some fuel line clips and we'll see how she goes. I can't wait to get this baby right !

you might be over coimpensating on the hsn for the lsn being too rich or lean. Lean the lsn out 1/4 of a turn and richen the hsn up 1/8 of a turn and go from there.
Later
