Hello again,

I have just learned about solo-props. Did you know those? Wow they're great. Variable adjustabel pitch with a scale hub. Would be great on a Stearman, driven by a Seidel!

here's the link:

Chasman, yes I did use different wires. I like them to be secured tightly with a screw. This way the concact resistance is lower, resulting in less current draw. Basically I used the brass inside of a common electric cable connector as is used in household electrics (i.e. in lamps and so on). Solder a cable to the one end, use the screw that normally would hold your lamp's cable to tighten it onto the glow plug and cover the whole thing with heat shrink... Done. Simple, yet very effective.

Don't try to start the engine the way you describe! I have tried it! Will give you muscle ache! It will start eventually, but oh - the hard work. And rather un-elegant. From my experience, priming is the way to go! The guys at the field alway look with envious eyes when I say: Let's start her and then it fires on first, lame throw...

Cheers, Martin

Martin, thanks for posting the Solo props. I had seen them, but forgot to bookmark them so I lost my link and the informaiton on the props. I would like to use them on my Stearman.

I just saw in the pictures of your engine that your harness has Seidel's new glow plug connectors. Very chique, very cool! Don't change them. They're great! I still have a set in the workshop that I will use on my Nieuport...

Send me pictures, when it's done! This prop is another reason to get a Stearman, man!

I agree, it'll be much more impressive to prime flip and start! Too bad the guys at Hobby Lobby who stock the German branded FEMA onboard starters couldn't make an onboard started for the Seidel!! I had one on my Ultimate Pitts 1/4 scale with a Saito 180. It always drew a lot of attention. Prime, stand back, flip a switch on the TX and after a few revelolutions, it runs!

Cheers

Gentlemen,

I acquired an ST-990 from Proctor many years ago. It remains in its wood box with collector ring, onboard glow setup, etc. Time flew with work and family and I now find myself with more time to consider finally using it. Does anyone have a recommendation as to a suitable airframe that, preferrably, does not cover the engine up in a cowl?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Hello Romeo-Alpha,

I have that same engine -valso in its box. So I have been pondering the same question. I guess a Stearman would be a classic. However, the engine's crankcase is somewhat big - not very scale... So if it was an airplane that had a cowling over the crankcase with the cylinders sticking out - much like my Stieglitz (above in the thread) - that could be nice.

One aiplane that comes to mind is the Spirit of St. Louis... Very importand and beautiful airplane for a beautiful engine... And since the Spirit was built to carry a very heavy weight (big wing) , it should have no problem with the engine. The only draw: The Spirit is know to be somewhat of a difficult flyer, what with the small tail surfaces and so on... In case of the Spirit of St. Louis I would not use the collector ring. Don't need it anyhow and the engine sounds much better - not noisy at all - but better without the ring. Then fix a Solo Prop and there you have it...

Cheers, Martin

Thanks for the suggestion Martin. I will be visiting the Smithsonian Institution in a few weeks and will make it a point to get lots of pictures and documents of the Spirit just in case...

I have a Seidel 525 on a true scale 1/4 Stearman. I am unsure what type of fuel I should use. I was told FAI (0% Nitro) but the engine does not stay lit. What are you using? Any help with this engine would be greatly appreciated.

I just received my Microsens Glow7 onboard glow today, what a nice piece of workmanship! It has the leads all cut and set for the ST710 so all I have to do is connect them to the glow plugs, receiver adn battery and I am good to go! That is the good part, the bad part is I will not be using the well crafted glow driver wire set that was shipped with the engine.

Hello again,

sorry, I've been busy...
Yes, I do remember seeing those inspection covers and so on. But like you I don't remember, where...

Meanwhile the Nieuport has been ready to go for a couple of days. And we also had wonderful weather with clear blue skies. But the autumn wind! Been quite strong and gusty. Too much for a WW1 fighter's maiden flight. So I am waiting...

If you find the web site, do let me know, please...

Cheers, Martin

Have you posted any photos of the Nieuport? I have found a work around for the inspection holes. I found some 1" od x .675 id x.018 thick washers that might work Here are some photos:
