Bull,

In response to your inquiry about carbon fiber rods and control systems, I've been using nothing BUT C/F rods for all my planes for the last several years due to their superior strength, resistance to deflection loads, and lighter weight. I haven't used them on anything over 30 pounds or so yet, but they have worked well for others at weights over 40 pounds. All I fly is giant sacle in one form or another, so I'd say the C/F rods work out pretty darn well.

Look at the pics I posted of my Ultimate and you should see a C/F rod or two in some of them.

For Tom Riddle:

I used the fuel tank that came in Tom's Hardware package. I can't remember right now if it was 20 or 24 oz. In one of the photos I posted, I had moved the tank forward so folks could see the plate I used to mount the receiver. Because it's pushed forward, it might look as if I had a smaller tank mounted in there.

Hope that clarifies. Enjoy your assembling. I will be re-configuring my setup from the pictures I posted earlier. I ordered a set of 1100 NiMH batteries from NoBS batteries to replace the hobbico 1600's in the pictures. It'll take about 2 days to do all the formatting charges they recommend, and then I'll need to see where to place them for balance. Hopefully, it doesn't require major mods in my setup.

Gary,

Thank you for the quick reply. I recall from some other threads that a 16 oz tank was usually sufficient for 10 - 15 minute flight on a 50cc (and would leave a suitable reserve without hauling extra fuel around).

I'm using NoBS NiMHs as well - great product. Currently measuring 3x to cut (the cowl) 1x. My BME 50 requires some standoffs so I'm triple checking the distance to go with the Hanger9 mounts that I am using.

Still searching for a "wild hare" pilot, though...at least Easter is coming so I have plenty of applicants!!

Ken,

Thank you for doing such a great job with this thread - I especially appreciate the detailed cowl cut-out pix.

Does anyone know if the DA50 cylinder head and pitts muffler combo has about the same size/shape as a BME 50 cylinder head/pitts combination (as regards cutting the WH Ultimate Cowl)?

Any pix of a BME cowl cut-out would be very much appreciated.

Also, any considerations for using standoffs with a BME? I'm thinking about mocking them up with wood dowls (to get the measurements & spacing and then asking Roger Forgues to make a custom set for me. Kind of a 'Pimp my ride" approach...

You are very welcome, I sure wish I could help you with your BME dilema but I am afraid I can't. Hopfully some one will chime in for you.

Ken,

Thank you very much for the quick reply. No worries - you have provided a wealth of assistance already and I just wanted to say thank you.

I found measurements for the DA50 (including dimensioned drawings!) on the DA website - I think I can work it out...now, where is that tape measure....

Hi Tom,

I'm disappointed with my attempts to make the cowl cut-out look decent (apparently my dremel thought it was in charge). Its not a total loss or anything, but I'd like to try it again - Do you sell replacement cowls (or is there a 3d party vendor that does)?

For those who might be considering a BME 50 for their ultimate, the Hanger 9 1.20 - 1.80 aluminum mount (recommended by Keith at BME Engines) works very well with the SWB Manufacturing 1"-1-7/16" Motor Stand Off kit.

I bought a World Models Ultimate about 8 months ago. Shortly afterwards, however, I got very busy at work and had to put my R/C stuff on hold for a bit. So... the plane sat in the box collecting dust. Recently, I decided to get serious about building my first gasser/ultimate bipe. However, I've been reluctant to start building the World Models plane because I really wanted a Wild Hare Ultimate all along. (I only purchased the World Models bipe because it was a bit cheaper.) Anyway, I finally decided that saving a few bucks isn't the priority and that I should buy the plane I want. Unfortunately, today I found out that they are out of stock of the yellow scheme and will be for 3-4 months! Doh!!

Tom, please let us know when you get more planes in... I can wait a bit longer I suppose.

In the mean time you can get the WM plane in the air to practice with until your color comes in. I had a couple of them and they are pretty fun, but 3D is out of the question. Nowhere near as capable as the Wild Hare, but a good way to get into the swing of things. Did WM ever do away with that flat abortion they called a cabane strut?

BTW, there's an Ultimate for sale here in the W/H forum. Don't know what color but you might want to make contact to find out.

For those about to, or currently setting set up an Ultimate, an addendum to the C/G notes in the instructions should be added not to exceed 6-7/8" aft of the leading edge of the top wing measured from the "point". Anything aft of that point will be exceeding the maximum aft C/G limit for the plane, and can leave you with a plane dangerously quick and loose on the controls.

An excellent location for superb performance will be in the 6-1/2" to 6-3/4" range.

Pat

Well since I was running the tape measure for Pat I can agree not to exceed 6-7/8th.
By the way Pat where did it end up at??? I still think you need at least 1/2 forward of where you are.
