There are more reasons than i care to list why you should seek a helicopter rating in a certified rotorcraft rather than find a creative way to maim or kill yourself. As a witness to the aftermath of real accidents, and dead friends, I urge you have more regard for your safety than to pursue this, ESPECIALLY at your current experience level. Make it the largest remote control helo of all time instead.

After having just fixed a enstrom that a student,who has 2000 hr in fixed wing, slamed the tail into the ground, get instuction. I am learning in our a/c so I have it fresh on what it is like to learn and I know it would have been a total 30 sec into the flight if that long if i had no instruction. 10-15 hrs are needed just so you wont reck it. And then it still takes about 60 hrs to pass the check ride. It is a lot of fun. I spent 3 hrs this weekend flying 15 ft above the Mississippi river looking for something lost from a boat. As one who makes a living fixing these things, it also takes a lot of flights to sort out the rotor head balance and track. when I set it and I have access to the best balance equepment., It takes about 5 hover flights, and ths same fwd flights to get it from shaking its self apart. Also the FAA requires all experimental first flights be with a rated pilot.

Give us an update.

Oh yea!
There is a video on the web of a guy who just bought a Shwitzer who decided to fly it while his instructor went into the fbo. 30 sec and totaled! If I find it I will post it. Torque got him.

TFF, I've seen that video....that guy was just plain stupid. I think his instructor was late and he decided to just try it himself! When I was in primary, we all solo'd in a Bell 206 at about 16 Hours, and then had our check rides at about 50 hours. Took about 2 months to fly the 50 hours, logging about 1-1.2 per day. Flying is so much fun and I always get excited when I get to go flying somewhere.

holy raining on the poor guys parade....I believe he did say he was going to get some training before flying..if it weren't for guys like this we would still be hanging out in trees flinging poo at each other

You're just plain nuts man. You really have a definite death wish. On a heli, one little thing breaks and you're toast even if you have 20000 hrs. of training. I wonder why manufactured helis take 100000's of man hours to develop and test fly?????????????????LOL. Ain't nothin gonna hold your head on when the main rotor blades explodes and slices your head off !

The details on that 'famous' video (rotary-untrained pilot trys to fly a small Hughes heli without the instructor) can be found on the NTSB database

Search for registration N101DN, incident occurred in April of 1987. The 'wannabe' pilot had quite a bit of fixed-wing time, and also multi-engine, I believe.

How about this: Put in a heavy-duty r/c system, add some sand bags to simulate pilot weight, and test fly the machine as a *giant* r/c heli? At least that way, you wouldn't be putting your life at risk to find out if it's basically functional / flyable, check out the engine / mechanics, etc.

I am still here. I have not had much time to mess with the helicopter much lately. I am working on training now. I have been doing so video taping but nothing to interesting of as yet. Once I learn to fly it I will take more video.

Could you please give us more info on the heli ?

What tubes did you use ?
Aluminum ?With what diameter ? And how did you connect them ? Because aluminum welding is....
Also,
what's the AllUpWeight ?
And
what about the engine ? How much HP does she make ? And did you have to convert it anyway?
How is the motion transmitted ? Could you take any pics ?

It will help us all...

BTW i LOVE your frame! Nice job !

Hello, My name is Jim and I to am working on a Adam Wilson Conversion 95, I wanted to ask the size of the main rotar? I have a set and i need to get 8.5" X 9' . I currently have 5.25" X 9' (2) and i have sence figured I needed the larger one. To create more lift.

Just my opinion, home built helis are NOT for the beginner !!! With about 3900 hrs of rotorwing time I can say if you are not COMFORTABLE ( !!! ) in a heli, you have NO BUSINESS trying to learn and sort out at once !!! ......... Ain't gonna work !!!!!! It's hard enough to sort out a fresh certified bird in it's self. !!!!!!
