oh boy, where to start, for one the better one for you depends on you, I have had nitro and electric, I only have nitro now and I love them better, but thats me, I got tired of charging batteries, cleaning motors and replacing brushes and having mediocre run times. With nitro you have full power until you run out of gas. BUT, some will say that nitro is more maintenance. Which may be true but my electrics were more of a pain in the rear. Probably depends on the enviroment you run them in. Nitro cars are in need of tuning the engine though, which depending on your skill and know how isnt that hard. Nitro and electric can both be very fast, but as I said, nitro is full power all the time, electrics can dump pretty quick sometimes. currently I have a Tmaxx and a RC10GT, both are pretty tough and allot of fun, but both are very different, the maxx is my beater truck that I jump anything and everything to see how high I can get it, the GT is my race truck as it doesnt have near the suspension the maxx does. What are you planning on doing with it?

Does that help any?

Neal, the T-Maxx may need more room to run than a buggy. You will need a bigger track. I think they are great, but my GT is awesome too! I think the GT is faster on the track.
Some things to consider...

1) Do you or your dad know how to tune up your family car? Do maintenance on it? If not, electric may be best since although they may have a shorter run time, you don't have to do engine work other than what JohnVH stated. You may have more fun if it always runs.

2) Parts supply. Do you have a local hobby store (LHS) that has parts that you may need? I have not broken anything on my RC10 FT B3, or my RC10 FT GT despite some wild hits to the boards on a track or other bad driving:p The LHS is also a great source of info for the beginner.

I prefer Associated over Losi.

How big of a track are you building? I wouldnt think you would need a huge track to run a maxx but a GT will definately be quicker around any track as its more of a race truck. Let us know what you end up getting! What do your friends drive?

pretty long? Like how much space is the whole thing going to take up? I would think you would be happy with either, the GT is faster I think but have not raced them. On a track it would win. check out tower hobbies and or ebay

i have a t-maxx and i love it

as you may be limited in size i think you might like an hpi MT

its as fast as a tmaxx when you get 2 speed its even faster and its 4 wheel drive pretty cool

and remember to shop around get to know the companies and what the cars are like

The GT is VERY durable. I have not had to replace any parts yet, although a ball cup is a little loose...

Also, the GT is "Legal" in a race sense. 4 wheel drive and 2 speeds are not legal for racing, although I am sure many tracks have a T-MAX class.

well We have very limited information to work with here.
It would be my guess Dad is laying out the "Jack" to buy this car, I would suggest he read all the posts so far.
I personally would not think of an e-car...
How much money do you want to spend?
How big is your track..(in dementions not general)?
How far is Dad willing to streach?
Big track, Big money. big nitro.
This hobby is as big as you want it to get. I once dreamed of a 9.8 Mercury outboard ...I thought that would satisfy my skills as an angler, and not hurt my ego.
I have since owned a 9.8/25/50/75/90/100/and my 150 now....I wish I had all my $$$ back for not making up my mind in the first place.....Moral of the story: Don't buy just what you will be happy with for a while....Go for it if you can afford it
I pilot a Turbo Quake (My First Truck).
I also have a (means for divorce) hanger full of airplanes.
Dad will let you know what is best...(for him and for you)
Good Luck my friend
