Bob,
I have just broke in a BSE120L with a Turbo Jett muffler. An email from Dub told me to break it in with a 16X6 and use a 17x6 for flying.
It seems to run fine but it is not hitting the RPM,s I was expecting. It is only getting 9300 peak with a 16x6 APC and 9000 peak with a 16x6 MA,and 9600 15x6 Zinger
I have not tried the suggested 17x6 APC yet ,I am afraid it is too big.
I broke it in with 15% coolpower [fresh jug] with 2.5 oz of castor added, I live near sea level, the stock plug was changed to an OS8 with no change in performance. I ran half a gallon through and it sounded good I thought my tac was lying.I put in the plane a Funtana 90.I took it to the field.I fired it up again and checked my tach with another one and they were showing the same numbers.I flew about 4 flights. It didn't seem to have anymore power than a Saito 100 on the same plane. I have almost a gallon through it now.The only thing I can think of is it is not getting on the pipe?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks Kelly

Hi,

Thanks for writing....

The engine is not too far from off the mark from what you noted. The Zinger and MA props are hard to evaluate - they are fairly thick blades. Jett's baseline numbers are all from standard APC props (since they are consistant, and prove to be good references for evaluation). You can use and fly with whichever props you chose, keeping in mind you want the engine running at 8500 rpm or higher (ground peak RPM) when using the turbo-jett. I personally prefer the APC 16x6, 16x8, and I have also used the Menz 15x6 and 15x8 wood blades on my BSE-100 with excellent results.

You noted 9300 with the 16x6 and turbo-jett. This is not too far off. Although you noted the break-in period, the engine may need some more run time.

I would suggest perhaps putting the engine on the test stand with a 15x6 (or similar), get it up above 10K rpm for some period of time, and then moving on to the larger props. Sounds like the engine may be very well fit, and might still be a bit tight.

The BSE-120L with a jett-stream muffler gets an APC 16x6 up to about 9800 and a 16x8 to about 9200 on an average day. Fairly good from something that is basically a "60" size engine. With the turbo-jett the RPMs drop off about 200-300 rpm, but, it works better with the larger props (more torque). This would put the 16x6 baseline around 9500 rpm. The 17x6 will load the engine down below 9000 rpm a bit, and the turbo-jett will keep it swinging about the same rpm as the 16x8.

Your glow plug choice is ok. OS8 tends to work fairly well. Sometimes with the big props, the OS-F plug works real well too.

I will review the feedback here with Dub, and he may provide some additional information as well.

I hope this is helpful.....
