I've used all sorts of paint also after first testing on an old fuselage. I haven't found one yet that would eat through the original paint. Everything but Krylon Fusion seems to eat the foam on a HZ Supercub though. I painted my mustangs tail with it and I'm am pretty happy with the results. I have been playing with landing gear also. I had some mounted but ripped the mains off when I cought a dirt pile on takeoff. I really love the look of the mustang without them but like takeoffs and landings too. Eventually I will upgrade to a brushless motor and lipos. Then I am going to try retracts. GlacierGirl did this and was seccessful. I think the post were back around page 55 but it may have been earlier.
As far as landing gear and rudder go, here is my plan:
I got main landing gear from a PZ J3 CUb I cut them in two($6), strightened them and switched the axles to face inboard. I took the wheels off my sons HZ SC but also ordered some 2 1/4" Dubro superlight wheels($6). For the tail I used a Dubro micro tail wheel bracket ($2) from my LHS and gorillia glued it to the tail ( I'm going to replace it with a micro steerable and connect it to the rudder control horn $10? ) I also cut some landing gear doors out of cardboard and painted them to match but they still need some work(Free ).
I got a used transmitter and reciever from a Trojan. ( You could buy new for around $65 )
I am going to buy three of the three wire PZ servos ($12 each or $36 total)(unless I find a good deal on some name brands)
-One in the wing for Ailerons, (original location)
-One for the elevator (original location)
-One for the rudder (You alread have a mount for the servo beside the elevator servo.)
I'm going to cut the rudder out and hing tape it. I have an extra control rod from a spare fuselage so I just need to put a hole in the fuselage for the rod to come out and add a control horn to the rudder. ($3)
Next I will have to buy a brushed ESC (to use the stock motor) or go ahead and upgrade to a Brushless motor and brushless ESC. I'm thinking with the extra weight I may need to make the leap. ($30-$100)
Last but not least you are going to have to check and adjust you CG. If you foamed your nose you may be ok still but check it.

I guess it will be around $200-$250 to go brushless and add a rudder and landing gear. The thing that make it worth it for me is to have stuff I can really move to another airframe if/when I get tired of this one. If you have the money you could go ahead and add retracts for another $130 or so but unfortunately I don't

As far as the prop goes, it is a real waste of power from what I have read but it sure is real pretty Again if you search for the post from GlacierGirl, he also added a four bladed prop to his. If I can find if, I will edit and left you know what page it was on.

If you look a short few post back, you'll see exactly what I used to paint mine and the results.

I used Testors Model Masters Metalizer "aluminum" spray straight from the can and sealer. The nose was Tamiya flat blue acrylic through an airbrush. I used spray, enamel, and acrylic. It's still here waiting for a good day to fly. NONE of the foam was even slightly effected by the paint. You're perfectly safe. Trust me, I don't have the money buy a new one right now, so you could say I was very careful about the process.

I had a cool thing happen the other day. I was flying the mustang with the camera on board, I wanted some very high altitude stuff so I went WAY up. Probably as I've ever taken it. When I had hooked up the battery I had left the throttle in the up position causing the esc to go into program mode and ended up with the brake on, but I didnt worry about it and flew anyway without resetting it. Well at this high altitude I throttled back too far, the brake stops the prop cold, I hear a bang, and see yellow falling down from Mr Bones. I knew I lost the spinner but didnt know what else broke. I later found out that the heavy prop nut I use from the FW190 came off with the sudden stop, the propeller, and spinner went bye bye. Let me tell ya, without the prop, the mustang glides like a dream. If you have even flown till the voltage cut off comes on, you know without the motor running, flying time is OVER, but without the prop acting like a parachute in front it really glides great. Real shallow glide. Anyway, I had the camera running and I thought it was going to be great footage, but mostly it just got quiet. So, thats my story.

AHAHAH Nice one!! Because I am running an APC prop that are stiff as buggery, I have my ESC set to brake! I have always wondered why people complain that she does not fly good at dead stick. my landings are all the same. I get her up and away from me - then kill the motor and glide her home dead stick. It works a treat!

    Cheers

dont forget the Cof G will have changed without the weight of the prop, prop nut and spinner, try checking the CofG without the prop ,prop nut and spinner, then adjust the CofG with prop, propnut and spinner on, to where it was without them ,then fly like that,
I bet your glide time is better.

Well I finally flew frankie with the new DX7/AR6100 and the motor upgrade, it was pretty windy but I had waited long enough. It went right up although the wind really bounced it around, but it was a good feeling to know that the upgrade work and new equipment payed off. The geese and sea gulls heard Frankie's new whine and took off in a hurry....and Frankie landed to fly again...the most important thing !!! Thanks again to Ploesti and Mongrel for the motor upgrade and Rx/Tx information.

Well, guess I should have done the CF Rod wing reinforcement I was flying along pretty as you please. I rolled inverted and was in a slight (15-20 degree) dive and rolled out (basically a split-s) and when I went to pull up, the left wing gave me a salute and down she went. I was probable still 70 feet in the air and had time to cut power and say awl S#1T as she done into an alphalpha field. The field was about 3 1/2 ft high so I had to walk around playing with the transmitter to find her. She actually dug in about two inches in the dirt when she hit. Prop is done but was still together. The engine cowl is all cracked up but the tape inside held it together. The spinned is done also. I think I have enough parts now for a static display . My Fuselage has more wrinkles then a Shap-Pei but thanks to the foamed nose, it could and probably will fly again. My original fuselage (originally thought to be unfixable) looks better now though. Next wing will get reinforced. I had the thing apart before to add those landing gear supports but didn't bother with the rod because I hadn't upgraded the motor. I'm finally got over my nervousness now this

    OH BUGGER!! That sux!

I have not reinforced my wing yet either and I must say I give her quite a bit of stick. Hmmm I don't want to think about it.

Moonbeam McSwine had a very successful flight this Sunday afternoon. Good launch, responsive controls, plenty of power, and a nice landing, (minus all the mud it collected from the soggy polo field!).

Hoping to do another couple flights later today, (Monday). The video didn't turn out very well, so we'll try again later. Sorry. But all went well.

This brushless motor that fits into the stock mount........ tell me more. I'm thinking about it.
