Hey Licobra - I remember about a million posts back or so you talked about that AON drop-in for the stock gearbox, but in my searches I can't find the dang post with all the info. What triggered this question is those two pics you posted with the motor in place and the mods you had to do to fit it. I'm looking to go BL, but I am leary of mounting a motor direct drive as I would spend forever trying to rejigger the down-right thrust offset. What was the name of that motor again? I know it is an Aon, and what pinion did you have to use? Thanks man.
So, this latest incarnation of my PZ P-51 is getting the ground-up rebuild, including this custom foaming/shaping/painting of the frame. I''ve since drilled holes to accommodate the motor wires to the side of the battery cage, and bought a new airframe to stick it in. Fits perfect, and no unsightly/unevenly distributed foam bubbles Funny Whiznr, I think I probably have the exact same setup as you do as far as Tx, Rx, and ESC, and I also used submicros as a retrofit, but I must admit the way my elevator servo mounts is a total kludge. That plywood idea is a keeper and I shall steal it tyvm . on my old wing, I used a dollop of gorilla glue to secure the aileron servo - and - much to my chagrin, by morning the servo was locked in a bubbly golden shell. D'oh. Learned that lesson th hard way.
Some pics below. Most of the TLC on the frame, two are of my work in progress, but as you can tell the blue I went with for the initial line is far too dark. Oh well, at least the mask line is pretty clear. I've yet to set on it with a brush - this is all spray/mask work as yet, but I'll keep you posted. I think I am gonna try and do the artwork myself, maybe using the testor's printable decal sheets and a spare set of the PZ's stock Frank decals from my LHS. I've a fair hand with Photoshop I must say, being a web guy in real life . If I run into any snags though you can bet i'll holler.
cheers, josh

Groundrushesup,
LOOKIN GOOD!!!!!!!! Don't hesitate to hit me up if you want help with decals and stuff. Are you planning to make it after an actual 352nd plane or a made-up one?
If you decide to do an actual 352nd FG pony, I can get you everything you need to make it REAL accurate. As far as I know there's only 3 or 4 of us with Bluenoser Park Zones. My brother & I have the only "accurate" representations. There's plenty of gasser ponys with the Bluenoser scheme. It's cool to see the numbers growing.
Another cool paint scheme would be "Ridge Runner" from the 4th FG. Here's a few pics of some cool ideas:

Couldn't resist.... here's a few more for your viewing pleasure: The 1st pic is Punchy's D model "West by Gawd Virginian II", 2nd is "This Is It!" flown by Col. Joe Mason. 3rd is Punchy in his D model. 4th is Punchy & his wife Betty with my brother Keith on Keith's B-Day in my basement bar. There's blue paint on Keith's nose from his official "Bluenoser Oath" he took right before Punchy handed him the plane I made. The cup cakes have little bluenoser 51s on them.

Ground..I actually used an e-flite 6 series 2700kv brushless (28mm diameter), bought it through horizon hobby....(all part numbers were furnished by Ploesti). The pinion gear also from horizon, is a robinson racing 32pitch 12 tooth.....#RRP0120, also Traxas has same part TRA3942. I have read on the other parkzone threads (spit &190) they swap the brushed motor and replace it with the Parkzone Striker 1880kv brushless motor with pinion attached....a little cheaper but another direct replacement. I also used a 40A ESC by castle creations, they sell a program cd and attaching hardware kit to program the esc...on your PC. takes one minute to program...and very cool paint job. The post on the align motor is page 118, post 2930 and 2940.
Whiz...I think that is so cool that you hang out with real Mustang fighter pilots...the stories he must tell !!!

Thanks for the inspiration Whiznr, and thank you LiCobra for the info. You'd have done well to just tell me to scroll back and RTFM, which is exactly what I've done.
You know when I first got Frank and found this thread I did actually read up to page 55 or thereabouts, but I figured I would skip ahead thereafter and see what the total distilled knowledge of hundreds of owners was near the end. Man I love the internet!
The (re)build is progressing piecemeal at the moment, with some refinements to the elevator servo mount (ala Whiznr's balsa - I used a nice chunk of ABS from an old headlight assembly which is light and strong and works poifectly). Still waiting to get to the LHS for the Tamiya blue and the printable decal sheets so I can set to work - I'm off until Saturday so I hope to have 'er in the air by then (or at least perched on the flight line).
I have noticed that the dang ESC's battery wires are always flopping back up into the frame, and I have yet to figure out how to fix that... still a hassle even with the deans, and I can remember when I still had the Tamiyas I would get out to the field and have to spend 5 minutes with my Leatherman trying to fish out the battery wire to connect the darn thing... Oh well, once I get 'er prepped and back in the rotation I suppose I can come up with a system for that. Sinai's Velcro strap for the battery door is a head-slapping why-didn't-I-think-of-that idea that I am looking to implement - but parallel to the fuse to make it less intrusive upon the smashing paint scheme lol. I've got some auto-grade transparent velcro that takes paint (acrylic like Tamiya if you thin it) so that's on the list. I dont know about you but I've seen the YouTube video of the Frank that died dude to a midair battery sep... no way that crap is happening to me lol
Hey Whiznr - did you end up using a extension wire on your elevator servo and your aileron servo or did you find a place to mount that accommodated both? I ask because when I put everything together for an electronics test, things were a bit tight, and I think the AR6100 ended up not velcroed to the sidewall as planned but dangling under tension in the center of the airframe (no bueno for sure).
anyways, just talkin for the sake here
cheers, josh

You know you could always pull the skin off and add a piece of velcro around the battery compartment itself. Then it doesn't really matter if that stupid little door falls off.

Mine has an extension cable on the aileron servo. As far as the ESCbattery cable, I mounted the ESC close to the battery hatch. You can plug in the battery, slide it in, and tuck the cable down the side past the frame. I'll post a video as soon as I get back from vacation on Saturday.
BIGGEST news of all..... THE CONTEST IS ON!!!!!! Full details will be posted Sunday the 6th on all forums pertaining to the 51, 190, Spit, and T-28. Lets just say there's 3 prizes, 1st, 2nd, 3rd. First is a complete F4U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2nd & 3rd and pretty darn cool too!!!!
Oh the suspense........ (I know, "Whiznr, you suck!!! You're evil!!" I can hear it now.)
