Good points Tank...I guess it boils down to what extent you want to be involved in the hobby!

For me I think a lot has to do with the choices available. Nothing against P51s or Extras or the like but I want to have something a little different, something that will stand out at the field. You just can't do that with ARFs. Companies, understandably, want to make something they can sell a lot of. So you don't see any Japanese Tonys or Raidens, though there at least three different Zero ARFs. What about Russian warbirds. I've never seen an ARF.

Of course there is the satisfaction part of building something yourself and challenging yourself to doing something new or more difficult than the last kit. Some of the ARFs today are really good but they just don't interest me like a kit.

I did not read all the posts to this subject but, I got the drift. Arfs can be a way to save some $ and a lot of hard work. Quality, yea some are of great quality, I am building them myself. Do you want what everyone else has at the field or something different? You will always find the same ARFs at the field, the manufacturerers are all competing with each other with the same type of plane. Extra, Cap, Pitts, or what ever. Individualilty is what it's all about, my own paint or covering. Wanna go to the show and look at the next guy's plane that is just like yours or something different? I like my own personal touch, but ARFs do get you in the air quickly.

No one is metioning the point of pride. Anyone who has ever glued anything together can assemble an ARF, building a kit or scratch building is an acquired skill.

Besides why do you want your airplane to look exactly the same as everyone elses at the field. If you've ever successfully flown an airplane that started life as a box of wood you know what that feeling is and for me personally I'll pay the extra couple of bucks.

Well, I always thought that "lite ply" was just a term for plywood in very thin sizes. But, I have to take exception with the idea that you can't build a good fuse out of plywood. I have flown both balsa fused planes and plywood planes, and I'll take the plywood everytime, because it is so much stronger. The plane I'm flying now, the Classic from CheckerboardAir (www.checkerboardair.com) has a beautiful liteply fuse, and it's really a rugged plane.
