I have an Align 400s motor that I took off of a T-Rex helicopter (I upgraded to a more powerful motor). My thought was that I would put the motor to use and hence the purchase of my Yak 54. Up front, I apologize on my ignorance of electric r/c. The Align 400s specs are 290w, 2800kv, 7.4-14-8v. I am running the motor with a Phoenix 25 speed controller and tried two different lipo batteries. Both batteries were 11.1v one was 700mah and the other was 1500mah (company starts with the letter K red shrink wrap. sorry its not in front of me). The prop that I used was a 10X4.7. Before I went through the set up on my speed controller (running everthing as default) I would gradually increase the throttle, and when I get up to half throttle the motor would cut out. This occurred with both batteries/charged.

I read through the speed controller in the programming and changed the first option (I forget exactly, but something about the batteries) to auto lipo for 2-4 cell lipos. Once this was done the motor would not cut out at half throttle, but was really drawing down the volts (down to 7 or 8 maybe lower). The amp guage we were using only went to 10, but i was getting over 10 amps at half throttle. Anyways things did not sound right with the motor so I shut it down from full throttle. The motor wasn't hot, battery was warm, and the speed controller was pretty darn hot.

Thus here lies my problem. I know this motor wasn't exactly designed for airplanes but can i still use it? If I can what do I need to change. I am running this outrunner directly to the airplane (no gear box). Do I need to use a gear box or try a different prop size? Your input is valuable! Thanks for your time.

Brad

The prop (direct drive) is way too big for that motor. Go to Aligns web site and look under "Motor Test", find the 400s and you can see the amp draw with various props and or gearing.

I am going to try mine on a foam jet using a 5x4 prop.

OK, thanks. What is the ideal amps to be at when at full throttle, and is it better to go with a gear box or prop down? Is there an advantage to going with one or the other?

if this is the foamy Yak... you will need a gearbox with that motor.....

to get in the prop range direct drive, it would have to be very small.... which would fly the plane....very fast.. which it is not designed for....

I think the 5x4 was the one recommended, but as stated above, it would not be good for the Yak and would definitely need a gear box. The motor diameter is 27.5 mm. All in all, it's not a really good choice for that application. I am sure no expert, just learning a lot about electrics my self, but I am familiar with the Align motor. I put a Lenher in my Rex.

So what ratio gear box do I put in, and with what size prop. Right now I have the 12X6 that came with the kit, and a 10X4.7 prop. You had mentioned something about the diameter of the motor. Will that motor fit in a standard gear box, or is there no such thing a standard gear box (i.e. a gear box for a 400 outrunner motor). I appreciate the help. I am getting close to my first flight. This is my last step in the process.

I also noticed that the diameter of the shaft coming out of the motor is like 3mm. The gear box that came with the kit looks like it is set up for a 2mm shaft. Is a 3mm shaft on the Align a typical size shaft for a 400 motor, and if so, will the gear box that i purchase come with a 3mm (so many tooth) gear for the motor as well?

http://www.align.com.tw/html/en/c_rindexe.htm

I don't know what gear box it will fit. The shaft will accept 1/8 bore pinion's.

As I stated above, I am not using it in a gear box, I am using it for a high speed application (small prop)

You might get more help if you post this in the motor/gearbox etc. section.
