Anyone have some details about the new Ikarus Viper 70 Heli that Heliaddict has been advertising here on RCU? Looks and sounds interesting... I'm wondering how it compares with the Shogun/Zoom 400 and T-Rex... looks like it's a tad bigger... 29.5" diameter rotor vs. the Shoguns 25" diameter rotor... requires 2.3Ah batt packs while the Shogun seems to use 1.5Ah packs... looks like Ikarus specs rebadged AXI outrunners for the BL motor option...

http://www.heliaddict.com/product_info.php?cPath=48&products_id=269

The description says it has an "innovative" tail drive transmission, but doesn't give details (belt, shaft, other??). It also says it has "two-stage" gear reduction... I'd like to see some pics of that and the rest of the mechanics...

I dont know if its belt or shaft driven, but it is geared. I think its so that they can get higher rpm's out of the tail rotor.

The Viper 70 has a hardened tail rotor shaft. Full bearings. It is a very robust machine.

Just got 1 in the mail 2 days ago. It was semi-assembled so I connected the sections together and it's not bad looking. Some inetresting points:

1. There are 2 main plastic gears (excluding the pinion gear on the motor) that drive the main rotor shaft. One is smaller than the other but both are smaller than a typical main gear. The 2 gears would provide same gear reduction / ratio as any larger, single-gear drive out there (I've also noticed this same effect with my 400 coaxal gearbox). Only thing is that the gears have to be thicker and with less toothcounts. In my opinion, the dual gear drive system frees up lots of hirozontal gear space on the frame, runs quieter and requires less frequent gear replacement

2. Tail drive transmission? It's belt driven. And I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Maybe I haven't seen that many tail drives

3. The tail boom diameter is huge! Your hampster can probably slide right through OK, I'm exsasgerating a bit. But it still is big

4. The canopy is another un-proportioned part on this heli. I think it's a little too big for the frame. Maybe it'll look better when I mount the main blades. But right now it looks more like a tadpole

I haven't got the heli completely assembled yet but am looking forward to fly her soon. I'll try to include closeup pictures of the gears later
