Okay, mine is done. I put a Magnum .91 four stroke on a GP .60-1.20 engine mount. Like Mark's .91 four stroke, I mounted both the elevator (F3010) and Rudder (F3305) servos in the rear. I ended up with a 1500 ma, Nicad 5 cell pack in the rear to balance at 90mm from the leading edge. The planes final weight is 7.4 pounds, or about 24.3 ounce/sq. ft. wing loading, which isn't too shaby. I did not add any weight to the plane.

Now if the weatherman will just give me a decent weekend, we can see how it will fly. I have posted details on my member information. This was an extremely decent ARF for the money. Only the stars were stick on, so be careful with heat on them, they will shrivel up on you. I ended up cutting some new ones from Ultracote. My covering had allot of wrinkles when delivered. The main covering and star trails appear to be Ultracote or Oracover. I will post some pictures soon as I figure out how.

Good luck to everyone.

Pictures attached of modifications for inverted .91 FS engine.

1. Blocked off holes in cowl adjacent to propeller, opened up hole in bottom for increase airflow and prevent engine touching cowl.
2. Installed air dam on bottom of cowl to increase scavenging of engine area.
3. Installed rudder and elevator servos in rear of fuselage and installed battery pack in rear of fuselage to balance without adding weight.

Hope this answers some of the questions I received.

Thanks to everyone else with the information they posted. Now if the weather will ever allow it, we will see how it flies.

Happy landings to all.

Unfortunately my decath hit the ground a couple weeks ago, was doing a knife edge and the wing caught the ground. The fuselage broke in half but everything else was fine, so I ordered a new fuselage. I rebuilt the airplane and is almost ready to go, except I could not find the manual so can anyone tell me were the CG is located again. Thanks.....here's a picture of the new and improved Decath!

This came off of the specs on towerhobbies web site. I believe it is accurate...

Center of Gravity: 3.9" (100mm) Back from the wing's leading edge at the fuselage.

This is were I got it from:

I lost my manual as well.

Spent the Easter Holiday working on my new Black Horse Decathlon (wife and kids in LA visiting relatives). The Phoenix and Back Horse are identical as far as I can tell. In this day and age of laser cutting, keeping track of computer files(intellectual property) is difficult... From what I have seen on the Net and the fact that Black Horse made this model as a supplier for Graupner, I would say the Black Horse model is of higher quality than others.

I am running inverted Satio .80 with engine cylinder cooling air ducting , Perry pump, 16 oz round Sullivan tank at CG, rear mounted servos, all the neat tricks. Balance looks pretty good, but not finalized yet, man these are nice models. Everything fit together absolutely perfect! The build quality is A1 but some of the hardware is junkie, the wood is not good old birch and spruce, more like tropical stuff that Chinese Art Van furniture is made from. Not the lightest but all in all pretty darn good for $119.00 from Hobby Lobby.

I will post photos and flight data soon.

My first plane was a Mattel Superstar circa 1971, anyone remember those?

I just built the Seagull version of the Decathlon. Installed an OS .46 AX with a Bisson Pitts muffler on it. Am hoping the power is enough. I believe the engine puts out 1.6+hp. Just fired it up today and it certainly pulls pretty hard. Once I fly it I will get back to this thread and let y'all know!
The Seagull also has the cut-outs at the bottom of the cowl area below the firewall. I believe this is to allow cooling air flow since most of the engine resides inside the cowling and will need all it can get. I would think twice about closing this area off.

Have now flown this airplane with the OS .46AX and it has a ton of power for the plane. Will climb like a banshee anytime I roll in the power. Had to add ZERO weight to the tail as the engine is light. Also considered the OS .50FX at 1.68HP and only .7oz heavier than the .46AX. Still working out the props and will update when I settle on one.

I have a question on the wing joining, could you leave the spar tube ungluded so you have a two piece wing for easy transportation or do you have to glue the wing together?
I was reall y impressed with the quality of this plane

I Have a 1971 Mattel Superstar, the precut cams l.g. the teather string, But no blank cams.
I had a couple back then and my uncle had several.
I found one on e-bay last year and bought it, it will need new batteries and I will fly it at least once.
Later Cosmo

How did you like the build of the kit? I'm about 3/4 finished with a Phoenix Extra 300s. Did your kit come with two wood dowel rods? I got two in mine that I'm assuming are the rudder and elevator pushrods. But blank dowel rods??? How did you mount them in (if it came with them)?

Oh yeah...did yours come with a gay pilot already installed? That's the #1 thing folks like to customize, and it surely won't be some lame plastic pilot....I went with Curious George!

Hello Guys, have read your comments with interest.I've just bought one and have had similar building issues that took some time to fix but very happy with the plane up to this stage.I have just bolted a 62a saito onto the firewall complete with vibration reducing du bro mount and inverted is definately the way to go.With the cowl fitted the rocker covers sit just nicely right behind the lower cooling duct.It is nose heavy so may go the pull pull rear mount servo route and save some lead.Any suggestions on a good throttle set up? as i need an offset to get back past the fuel tank and don't want to put to much of a bend in the supplied wire pushrod. It will be interesting to see how the saito 62 performs in this model. If it's half as good as it sounds i'm in heaven already...
