Hi everyone, another newbie here with some questions. I recently purchased G3 and was having a heck of a time controlling the trainer. I've been reading how to hover on raptortechniques as well as rchelicopterweb.com. They've both helped to a degree but I read something which disturbed me ... RealFlight is not a realilistic simulator, Reflex and CSM are much more accurate. So my question, did I make a mistake with G3 and will it ultimately discourage me getting into helis or should I keep plugging away?

Also would the HB2 be recommendable as a first-time electric heli? I thought about a Zoom Shogun 400 or TRex 450 but the price difference seems too steep for learning. I am sure you get what you pay for, but I would feel better about recking a $150 heli than a $400 one .. of course I'd prefer to keep either in the air rather than eatting asphalt. Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

I started with G3 then 3 months later I got a TRex and was able to hover nose in the first pack.

You’ll get different opinions from different people about any SIM. The only opinion I would stay away from is the one that say this SIM sucks this is the only one blah blah blah.

You’ll meet people on Heli forums that have learned and benefited for all the SIMS. The most important thing I think is you’ll learn the stick movements some orientation. Also the SIM is not the same as real stick time. I can fly the hell out of the SIM but I wouldn’t try half that stuff in real life at least not now.

Trust me when I say G3 will help you it helped me and I am no Einstein but I’m not Homer Simpson either.

Here’s the difference between learning on a CP as to a FP.

Crash a CP get your green out.
Crash a FP pick it up, straighten it out and start flying again (most of the time.)

Tony

I installed G3 the other day, I found it difficult at first, but once I removed a few of the backround things, it smoothed out.
It is still a bit sensitive, but if you can fly these, you will be able to move to the real thing easy enough.

126ron,

I too had trouble with G2 although not with the install. It only ran once - after that it would crash everytime executed. I ended up purchasing G3 b/c I needed a Tx and don't have a heli or radio yet.

I own both G2 and recently G3. I had a difficult, annoying time installing G3 and all the Add Ons from G2. The reason, had I read the Qs&As on the web site, I would have found that it was my AntiVirus and Spywear programs causing the problem. You MUST disable them for the install to go well. If you are having a problem with these programs, I would recommend uninstalling them, reboot from cold start, turn off your Anti Virus/ Spy Wear etc, and then re-install the G2/G3. This process helped immensely(SP?) Dont forget to restart when done and make sure your AntiVirus/Spywear programs are enabled again before going out on the web. G2/G3 will run fine with them enabled, they just dont install well.

Realflight is very realistic, especially for just learning to fly a heli... I taught myself on RealFlight G2, and am still using it to improve my flying skills. It took me about 8hrs of sim time just to be able to hover well in the sim. There's lots of opinions as to which sim is more accurate, and maybe that's something to pursue when you get much more advanced, but RealFlight, Aerofly Pro, and Reflex are all good sims, and any one of them should serve you well to get you in the air.

I'd stay away from FP helis... yeah, they are durable, but you'll crash them much more because they're so difficult to fly! I've flown about 170 flights with CP nitro helis and have had only one crash. I tried flying a Kyosho M34 FP heli and crashed the damn thing 10 times trying to hover it before I ran the batt pack down... yeah it survived unscathed, but so what? I don't see why anyone would want to screw around with those... just no fun IMO...

I have a question on how to learn basic helicopter flight with the G3.
I have flown fixed wing models for a while now, I am looking to get into Helicopters.
With the G3 what helicopters do you think would be best to learn the basics on ?
Where do I find info on how to set up the Interlink controller or my transmitter to fly helicopters??
Is there a basic flight tutorial that I can use?

Thanks

Scott,

The best place to start in G3 is with the Impala Trainer. It's basically an Impala .30 with training gear. After a week or two on it I was able to move to the Impala w/o training gear. As far as tips .... this is where G3 falls short and my biggest gripe. I used www.raptortechnique.com/learning.htm and with time, patience, and allot of crashes it proved very beneficial. I'd also recommend turning off the scenery and trees while learning to give yourself some additional space. It's been two months and I still crash from time to time although it's usually when I am trying something new.

Good luck,
Frank

I installed 3g and "add on 3". I have not been able to locate the Raptors under the airplane listing and there is no helicopter listing. How do I locate the Raptors?

I just wanna share with you the movie of my first heli flight, coming after 8 months of RFG3 training (Just to be on the safe side ).
The result was a successful flight, with 8 turns and nose-in, using a Shuttle ZXX with a mechanical gyro!
Please check the movie:
http://www.amazrc.com/ViewPilotMedia.asp?MediaID=353
So you see, RFG3 will do wonders if you put your mind into it, and train on the Impala for a few weeks, and move to the Sun Dog 60 afterwards for more serious training!!
I have tried AFPD when i installed it for a friend: It's too slow compared to the real thing... Makes you feel you're mastering all the planes and helis while actually you're not! I don't know about Reflex though, but as far as i'm concerned, RFG3 has made me a good R/C pilot within a few months!
