Man I dont know what you are doing to your engines! I have been flying 4-strokes pretty much exclusivly for years. I fly at 3 or more airfields on a regular basis. I own 5 saito engines along with others from OS,YS,magnum. I nor anyone I know have experienced the troubles you describe. I own 1 saito .91 with AT LEAST 15 gallons of Powermaster YS 20/20 . Man you must have some bad luck.
There is no debate as to the quality of OS engines, but Saito is top notch equipment in my opinion.

I have had only one Saito....an old .80. It was the only engine I ever saw I
could not get to run right. I still have the all time dead-stick record here
in So. Cal. I monkeyed with that thing for 10 years....no kidding. Once the
muffler fell off....eighty bucks for a new muffler and headpipe. It leaked oil
out of every seam, it was the messiest engine I ever saw.

I have an OS FS 90, several Magnums, and several YS's engines. If you gave me
a new Saito, I wouldn't put it in a plane....not while YS Engines are available on
this Planet.

I like the way the Saitos look....they're cool, but they want too much money
for them. I run the Magnums for sport, and the YS for performance.

Keep the Saitos.

FBD.

hmmmmm..... I find my 7 Saito's the most user friendly engines I've ever owned with the "possible" exception of an OS 32-SX and a Blue-head ST .60... and I've been flying multi-channel RC since 1970, glow-engines in general since 1957...

This is an interesting thread. I have flown YS, OS, and Saito. I must say they are all high quality. I simply love OS two strokes! I agree that Saito's, and YS' too, take a bit of finesse to get running perfect, but that is all it takes, just a little more attention to what you are doing in the beginning. I must admit I did not treat my first Saito 82 correctly when I first started running it. Did not break it in long enough, ran it a bit lean, ran without the proper cooling, etc and it still ran well. No dead sticks etc. I went back and retuned everything and the engine just purred. It has many many tanks through it and it still keeps purring. What a great sound and you can barely make it stop running. I also have a Saito 100 and from the beginning it has been awesome. Pay attention to what you are doing when setting the low end and high end and you will never have to worry about it again. Just check the valves once in a while. Those of you who have great running OS FS' check the valves and reset them if necessary and you may be pleasantly suprised at the fact that what you thought was a great running engine is now even better.

I bought a Saito 72, 2 years ago, new, and it has never idled correctly. It is erratic and unsteady, and always has been. Only at idle though... My friend Greg has 9 Saito's, and none of them idle like this 72. My 56 idles great !!! slow and smooth... but the 72 has always sucked. Even tried an idle bar glow plug. LOL At idle, it sounds like an engine with bad points, whereas the ignition is cuttin in and out at idle (erratic), but runs great otherwise. I wonder if the cam timing dot is off.... cause we checked that too...

Note to FLYBOYDAVE: Do you still have the 80??? I need one for a scratchbuilt that I built around this engine.
I will buy it if you still have it. (needs to have the old style muffler and headpipe)
Like a dummy, I let a buddy beat me out of the old engine (best running 4 stroke I ever had)

I have a 56 and a new 82a. After 7 tanks, the 82a will idle at 1800rpm, revs quick to 9600 with a 14x4 or a 13x8. With a 14x6 it will do 9200rpm. I was careful during the breakin, 6 turns out for two tanks and did not touch the slow speed screw until the 5th tank. The 56 is about the same but idles at 210rpm with a very rich slow speed. I am using it in a Cub so have not adjusted (being lazy)

I have a 56 and a 72... Run no less than 15% fuel, and run the low end as lean as you can with good transition (should idle smooth), and set the high speed needle so you see an obvious trail of smoke comming out . Both the 56 and the 72 run much better on 15 and 20% than they do on 10%, which just doesn't cut it....

My first Saito ( .50 ) is so good I have since purchased 4 more Saitos. Over the years I have been so pleased with them that I dont even concider other engines. ( of course there are other great ones Im sure )

I had a 56 that was JUNK Sent it in for repair four times, thay sent me a new one, it is doing ok now. I have a 72 can't keep bearings in it, another JUNK I have a 100, so far it is doing ok..

I changer over to O.S. I have five 70 Surpass I like them better then the Saito

Just like anything else, if you have something that gives you trouble you tend to turn away from it. I have frinds that say Saito is the best.. But I won't buy any more.............

Thats weird, I have only put 1 set of bearings in my Saito 72, and I been flying it for 3 years, and my Saito 56 has always been my smoothest runner and best fuel economy. Im curious what bearings you were buying for it. I bought the High Speed Stainless Steel with Rubber Seals, and remove the inner seals so they get lubed by the fuel in the engine. I think the first set went out because they left the inner seals intact, and when the grease was gone, that was it... no more lubrication... they were dry as a bone... Always remove the inner seal for oiling.

The first set I got from Saito, the second set were Ceramic bearings I got from
RC-Bearings.com. ( no inner seal).I bought this motor used, I think the cranckshaft might be bent. The guy I bought it from said it was never crashed, (BUT Hmmm I wonder??) I am tyring to decide if I want to spend $55.00 for a crank, then $20.00 for the bearings + shipping,it will be about $90.00 Bucks all total. I can get a O.S. 70 Surpass for $185.00. When the cost to repair one gets to be 1/2 of a new one, I don't think it is worth it...........

But I will say, my 56 is a smooth runing motor..........I have it in a Cub with a 81 in wing........

I use 15% Cool Power............Those Saitos realy like 30% Heili Fuel...But it's to spendy......

I agree on the fuel, except I started using 20%, and my 72 idles like my 56 now !!! almost...
My 72 has always idled like it has a big cam or a slightly stuck choke. LOL I have a feeling that the cam timing might be off 1 tooth os something, but it idles great on 20. I was using 10% when it loped real bad, then on 15% it was better, but it idles smooth on 20%. I don't have any 30%, I've been using 20% in my nitro heli (Nexus) and it seems to be fine... I was lookin at the OS 52 heli 4 stroke, but I see it lacks about 900 rpm compared to the OS32H I have in it, so I bagged that idea. I just don't like all the oil that 2 strokes spit out, and the sound of a 4 stroke is just cool... Im afraid that 900 rpm would be greatly missed though, but not totally sure, as I only fly scale... The Nexus is not a 3D machine anyway...

All my four strokes idle well, I have C-Tronic glow drivers on them, except the 56, I have one for it I just havent gotten around to installing it,mostly because the motor sticks out of the cowl and it is easy to use a glow lighter on it for starting. I am not into Helicopters, well I have a Blade Cx if that counts...... What kind of planes do you have?? I will tell you what I have next time, I got to hit the sack it's 3:00am and I have to get up early to go flying......
