Is that RCU in the backround?

It had better be RCU in the background!!! Or this thread is doomed!!!!!!

Seriously, that is exactly the glue you want to use. Especially for sheeting the wings. It takes a little longer than with CA, but IMHO it's well worth the extra time you spend.

Of course that is RCU in the background. ...I set up my workstation for the build right next to my computer so I can hop back and forth pretty quick!

Ok Day 3 progress:

I glued in the pre shaped trailing edge to the top of the trailing edge sheet and sanded everything flush. I then cut and sanded the trailing edge brace. I then trimmed and glued in the top trailing edge sheet.

Next I worked on the sheeting. I worked from the trailing edge to the leading edge and used the titebond II to glue in. This took a little time for the glue to set up. I used some baggies full of change to hold the sheeting down. I'm waiting until for the glue to cure on the sheeting and I'll be ready to move on the next step!

BTW I'm going really sllllooooowww on this. I'm measuring and trial fitting everything about 20 times before I glue or cut anything. I'm learning quite a bit from the Right Wing construction so I suspect the left wing will go a bit quicker. Here are some pics of my stopping point for this evening.

Dang your making great progress. The Build looks AWESOME! Thanks for the Pictures and questions along the way.. I've been flying for 2 years and stll have not built a kit, I'm thinking of doing just that very soon so I will probably ask many of the same type questions, now I don't ...

I've been following this thread Pretty Closely and Ken was right when he said everybody is cheering for you!

BAGS OF MONEY, SEEMS APPROPRIATE SOMEHOW, DOESN'T IT?

THIS IS EXACTLY THE PROCESS TO USE FOR A SUCCESSFUL BUILD. NO NEED TO RUSH INTO A MISTAKE.

Keep up the great work

I'm new to RC, but I used to build CL planes in my younger years (high school...yes that was a LONG time ago). I'm almost done putting my NexStar ARF together for it's maiden flight (with the help of an instructor) this weekend.

I hope to do some kit building this fall when it cools down. It's just too hot in the garage in the summer (wife put her foot down, no building inside the house unless I build a new room to do it in), it's been bad enough just spending a couple hours a night the last few days.

Keep up the good work, and I'll be watching your progress, and learning from it.

>>I need to refine my technique for appying the thin CA. This stuff seems to "pour" right out of the bottle with no pressure applied. I put a narrow tip on it to slow it down, but still seemed to get the stuff all over the place.<<

MountaineerFan36, for that thin CA, I put microdroppers on the end of the tapered nozzle. They are a supersmall tube (about the size of a hypodermic needle) and allow you to place one drop of thin CA at a time. Really usefull, especially when doing hinges. I found some at the LHS.

Some brands of CA include micro-tubing with each bottle. It is shipped inside the cap in the case with ZAP brand. Of course the only applies to THIN CA. I don't remember what brand of CA you purchased. Just cut a short piece with a very sharp razor blade (to avoid crushing tube) and insert in spout. If it becomes clogged, it can be replaced with a new piece. Be very careful of your eyes around CA. We forgot to advise you before but safety glasses are a good idea. A splash or drop in an eye will be memorable to say the least, also when using any power tool.

I went back and checked your initial post and you bought a more generic CA, which is fine. A point to remember when cutting off the tip to open the bottle is to remove as little as possible to minimize the opening size. This MAY be where you made a mistake. The hole should be no larger than a T-pin. Epoxy is thicker and requires a bigger hole than thin CA ever will.

You're doing fine. More pictures please.

Hey guys

I'm at the point where I've removed the wing from the building board (I'll post some pics and steps I took to get there in my nightly summary post) and ran into a problem. The plastic sheeting I used is stuck all over the back of the wing in various places. I've been trying to pick and pull the plastic off but is is stuck in a lot of places. It seems the plastic is stuck primarily where I used the thin CA

Can you guys give me any cool tricks for getting this stuff off? This is really frustrating.

Lightly sand the spars where the plastic is stuck to them. You might try switching to wax paper, it won't do that.

MountianeerFan,

Isn't it great that it's just the plastic covering that's stuck to the underside! It would have been a lot worse if it was your plans! Just be patient and pick of the plastic with tweezers and then lightly sand the rest. Personally that's what's worked for me....

Regards
Mike

Day 4 Status Report

I cut in the two slots in the top sheeting to accept the two top brace spars and glued them in place. Once that set up the instructions instructed me to remove the wing from the building table and sand flush all edges and go over all joints with thick/medium ca. I have not done this step yet. I'm going to come back to it tomorrow. Primarily because of the stuck plastic issue. I was getting a little frustrated with picking off all this stinking plastic. Anyhow I took a couple of pics of the wing off the board. It looks pretty strait to me

I moved on to construction of the left wing. I have not glued anything in place yet. I'm just getting everything alligned on the plans. I just need to set the dihedral angle on the root rib..recheck the allignment of all the other ribs and it will be ready to glue in. I can tell already the left wing is going to go much faster than the right one. It took me only a fraction of the time to set up the left wing on the board

Thanks everyone for all you encouragement and advice! There is no way I could be doing this without you guys.

Joe
