Nice job jctpro, that sounds awesome. It sounds like you are using the
stock transmitter for CCPM functionality, but have a HH(Heading Hold)
gyro eliminating the need for any mixer board or computer tranny revo-
mixing. Are you using the Feigao in a DD(Direct Drive) setup? I can
only imagine, that has to be a completely new helicopter to fly. Let us
know how the Feigao tail motor holds up over time if you want.

Pictures as requested will come tomorrow. The tail is not direct drive. I used the same gearing of the stock setup. I drilled out the gear after pulling it off the stock motor and pressed it on the brushless. I have 20 flights on it so far and no problems. Tail motor does not get hot at all after a 15 minute flight. No 3D in these flights, just forward flight and hovering.

I put a couple pictures in under my account. Look in the photo gallery for user jctpro. There are two Blade pictures showing the install. The heading hold gyro is facing the tail stuck to the servos. The CC controller is on top of the servos closest to the tail. The 20P ESC is stuck to the servos on the right side of the heli. I replaced the receiver yesterday after a number of radio glitches with a Hitec 6 channel. No gliches with this one.

Can you convert to direct tail shaft drive?

I would guess direct drive tail would work fine. I used the existing geared setup to take advantage of the soft mount of the tail blade in case of pilot error.

jctpro, your heli looks pretty cool. I checked out your pictures.
It sounds like you are using the stock Esky transmitter, but with
a new HiTec 6 channel receiver.......sounds like there are no more
stock electronics in that thing, no wonder why it works so
well! I just got in my brushless tail mod, the Feigao BL motor
and Castle Creations brushless ESC, but I am still waiting on the
continually backordered Futaba 7CHP computer helicopter
transmitter. Once I get this in, I can then setup the new BL tail
mod, till then, TREC will have to do its job. As far as the tail
will be setup, I am going the direct drive route, better RPM,
a bit less weight, the tail rotors are only about $1.00 as opposed
to the stock geared ones at about $6.00 and the DD(Direct Drive)
setup has better ground clearance than the stock geared setup
does.

Hi Gazmik,

I'm in the process of converting to brushless with a 3mm thick motor from a Laptop CD rom. I've ordered a few parts however my Heli's are all waiting for spares at present... You're probably seen the brushless tail motor on the other thread here anyway.

I'm looking for info from others who have gone this route before me - Do you know what the success was? With a fixed pitch tail rotor? I'd like to know if the brushless response is quick enough for the heli- That's my main worry at present.

David

david, from what ive read threre dos'nt seem to be a problem with bs response, but when i get 1 i'll let you all know.
r u going all brushless? because i'm thinking weight probs?

Hi Gazmic,

The brushless I have for the tail rotor is 11grams, compared with 9grams for the brushed motor (small) with a gear. I suspect the long tailmotor is heavier than the brushless.

At 11 grams, I think I have probably created one of the lightest brushless motors around ! But I started with a CD motor from a Laptop computer and then drilled holes in it. The tail rotor mounts straight onto the outrunner. Direct drive.

Also, the Dragonfly main motor is 55 grams... That is VERY heavy. I think I could install a small modified outrunner motor at about 23 grams and a controller in less weight than that !!!

So I presently think it's possible to save weight, improve performance and make the batteries last longer.

Regards
David

You could replace the brushes with carbon replacement brushes
cheaper then a brushless and solves the burnout problem "maybe"

sounds good to me david, let us all know what success or (failure) you have. I tried the DD rotors & they work the motor very hard so watch out.
just got my new 4-1 & G3 sim so i'm like a kid in a sweet shop.(candy to you boys)
thinking about getting the new Esky cp king which comes out in august. no tail motors to worry about there!
go to go guys, fun to had

I spoke to a guy last week who showed me how he had simply fitted a GWS IPS motor driving a 3030 prop....not the props that came with the motor. Works a treat for ages. Easy to replace too. Move the battery forward to allow for the heavier motor, use the same screw holes.

I called Horizon about this. The tech guy I talked to told me the eflite motors are not burning out is is just the little bushing on the output shaft side. If you don't try to run the tail with this bushing out you should be able to push it back in...mine has not come out yet but I have fixed a few for people and put a dab of thick ca on the outer edge with good results, just don't get any in the motor and make sure it's thick and not thin.
