Ok, obviously tail motors are the biggest PAIN IN THE *** that ever came on a helicopter. The darn things constantly burnout, and its not on any specific heli. Its a well known problem with many different helicopters.

After burning through my THIRD tail motor on my Blade CP...even with the heatsink on it. Im starting to get ***CENSORED***.

Its not the heli's fault, Its not e-flite's fault. Its these CHEAP *** asian crap motors.

So has anyone found a solution for this problem?

Im about to pull the whole tail off, and replace it with highly modified GWS IPS airplane system. Its the only motor that size that Ive never managed to burn up.

I still havent figured out why these things get so hot. Is it just that they are geared incorrectly, trying to swing too large a prop, too much pitch, over voltaged?

GRRRRRRRR

If I can ever get this tail motor situation resolved, Im going to put together a Blade video. Its gonna be awesome. I got some new stuff you guys probably havent seen yet.

I did an end cap transplant from a cheap N20 that I had and it lasted 5 batteries, so I have a DD for now. We'll see how long that lasts.

Hey Bryan sorry to here about the tail motor, mine has been working good the only problem is the collective sticking .I lubed it , freed up by disconnecting ball links at servo rod and working back and forth many many many times, tried grease, took apart head assembly and checked .installed symmetrical blades, flew in idle up mode . Any other ideas? Anyway just boxed up and sent it in to warranty . I first calledHorizon and talked with them about it for some suggestions what to try and they said they have a few of them sticking but would go away after 5- 10 flights. They said to send it back .I've been flying mine for over 20 times and not getting any better. Ended up breaking the ball on the blade grip. I'll let you know when they send it back. Bill

Bill, I dont know.

Mine went away now, and its flying great.....assuming I had another tail motor. Tony ordered some tail motors, so Ill just wait till they come in. Then Im gonna heatsink it real good, and see if that works.

We went flying tonight in the gym. I flew the shocky and my XRB around. Had quite a few good flights. Tony Stillman also has the Variable Pitch Prop plane on the sim in the shop. Its surprisingly not that hard to fly, and you can do some insane maneuvers with it. I had it doing a backwards flatspin. Thats right a BACKWARDS flat spin. It was spinning tail first. Really awesome looking. Hopefully the real thing behaves simularly. I had the thing doing nose down hovering torque rolls in the sim. He's got the Flattana's in stock, so he is probably going to build one and put the new GP Rimfire brushless on it with a Shulman VPP prop. Its gonna be interesting seeing that thing fly. The Flattana kit is AWESOME.

Laser cut parts, bigger wingspan than the shockies, it even comes with a decent brushed motor and a APC slow fly 9.4 prop. Heck of a deal for $39 bucks. Go check it out. Im holding out for the Reflection due end of the month.

I've had atleast 20 flights if not more on the same crappy Walkera tail motor using a geared tail. I've yet to burn one out. I must just be terribly lucky

You need to make sure you're using the N30 tailmotors, not the N20.
Obviously gear mesh is just as important on the tail as it is on the main. Maybe something to check if you haven't already...

Or switch to a GWS DD, like the EDP-50XC...

Have you tried a "Water Break-in" on the tail motor? try this on the next one before installing it. That'll cut down on the brushes arc'ing and reduce heat, in theory. Also, fly the first few flights with the stock NiMH battery as the lower voltage may help finish breaking in the motor.

Ive tried the N20, N30, and the last one was a N4JYsomething or other.
Im beginning to wonder if its just the summer heat down here. Its been a good 90+F outside lately.

Im seriously considering running a DD setup. What size props are you guys running on your DD? 5x4?

Im renaming my heli from "Blade CP" to "Puff the majic dragon", since that name resembles what happens. First you see the puff of smoke, then you have to fly the "majic dragon".

Even with all the tail motor problems, I still really like this heli. It rocks.

I must be another exception to the rule; granted, my micro heli experience is pretty limited. Last August, I picked up a used HB with Hitec radio gear, the century gyro and mixer, and stock 7-cell nimh batteries for a song. I've got no idea how much the original owner flew it, but I've logged close to 2 hours on the 'bird, and it's still on the original main and tail motors. Matter of fact, the only thing I've replaced so far is main blades. And I thought I was trying pretty hard to break it too......

I am new to the micro helis but couldn't you just mod a shaft driven tail to the blade? I work with a lot of Nitro Cars and I have done a lot of mods along those lines... would this work? I looked at buying the Blade but I don't like the fact that it has the tail motor. Please let me know if this could be done. Thanks!

If you're tired of burning out tail motors, I stumbled upon this yesterday, not a cheap solution mind you, as you'd need an all brushless setup, at any rate. Wether it would even work, or fit, for that matter, I don't know.
http://www.helihobby.com/html/motors.html

scroll down a bit, theres a T5 brushless tail motor there. It's all gold and pretty lookin'

Check this out.... I don't know how the blade is setup but you might be able to mod this to fit. It is cheaper then the Brushless motor. Hope this helps
