Problem: ASP 40, Used, good compression, no carb. Really cheap. I bought it. Yes it has good compression, yes it has no carb. I want to run it. I found a 2 needle carb and it fits fine. Can anyone offer any tips on setting up the carb? I have fiddled with this thing for longer than I wanted. To start with, What is a good place to start on the high needle? What is a good starting point for the low needle? All I can do is make it run backwards.
And then it spits fuel on me.

Thanks in advance,

Jimmy

The first problem is you've got it flooded..that's why it starts backwards and spits fuel at you. Take the fuel line off then remove the plug and give it a couple of seconds spinning over with the electric starter. Put the plug back in and fire it up until it stops running. Now open the throttle to at least half way and wind the main needle out 2 or 3 turns. Close the throttle to idle or so you could just fit a 1/16" drill through the opening. Connect a length of fuel tubing to the carb long enough for you to comfortably blow through it. You should just barely be able to hear air hissing into the carb if the low needle is set close to correct. I've got a feeling yours may be set too rich in which case you'll be able to blow air through fairly easily. All of that should give you close enough settings to get it running.

Personally I like to start an unfamiliar engine at close to full throttle and with the needle wound out a fair way. They'll always run rich but not lean. Another tip..fill your tank (on the bench) only until the level of fuel is close to the carb nipple. That way it won't syphon into the engine and flood it before you've had a chance to get it going.
