Yeah it was definitely a mystery to me. It was the 5th plane i built so at that time I had a pretty good idea what I was doing. One of those things I'll never have an answer to! Heres the front end. This was the first time I had used those hinges, all my previous models i used the standard diamond shaped CG hinges, except for the flaps on a Top Flite Corsair I used pinned hinges for the flaps.

Hi all. I got my cowl all fixed up and primmed. It's a good fit and looks pretty decent for a plastic piece of wonder. Now to get it painted. Ive had some problem in the past with peeling with multiply colors on plastic. I used a rougher sand paper to try and get the primer to stick. Also got my belly pan painted black. I did a c of g on the plane and it looks like no problem to get within manufactures recommendations.

Looks good rob, it sort of makes me mad that GB stopped putting a glass cowl and belly pan in this kit .I see the price is still the same for less .
They prolly decided to use the glass in the ARF planes .I remember mine very well about 8 flights on it before it started to crack in places ,I wasn't amused to say the least .

Cyberwolf- Do the plans call for flying wires? I've been wondering since I've seen some pics with them being used. My 170R3 that I'll use only puts out 2 hp, and that is in the 120 four stroke power range. I do plan on stressing the airframe with tumbles, etc.

You can hear flutter. It is very loud and easily heard. Don't ask me how I know....

I'm probably going to go with the fiberglass cowl and bellypan for mine. I haven't had a kit yet with a plastic cowl that didn't start cracking immediately. I'll probably start with the plastic just because it's included and after it starts to break i'll have the fiberglass ready to go. To me it's worth the extra $60-70. That has definitely got to be frustrating that they include something with so many kits that cracks/deteriorates so easily.

No the plans don't show any wires ,this is a safe guard I myself used after going to the larger engines .It takes almost no time to add some hard points in the tail feathers when building the kit. 3/8x3/8 spruce or bass wood can be used, even if a person doesn't use it the weight factor is nothing ,but its in there just in case of a mind change later on.

tom 1178 the cowling on this plane is big and acts like a big air scoop,so i'm sure theres some stress factors involved besides just the normal vibrations we get from our engines .
Another thing is theres no bolts holding it on after the halfway point ,that leaves alot of it unsupported .Some 1/2 or 3/4 oz glass to the insides all over and doubled or tripled around the bolts holes would more then likely make a huge difference in the durability of it .

Stans fibertech as a rule is where I get my glass items and although I haven't looked lately GB offered a glass cowl for the plane also.

Hi all. I did the yellow on the cowl and I thought the color looked alright when painted on fabric, but it looks like the fabric has more of a gold to it. I think I will have to do some more mixing. Once the black is one the top it should provide a little more distraction.

Hi rob ,isn't paint such fun to get it to match *L* but its still looks good .
Im fighting the same problem on a cub cowl I'll get it sooner or later .How long before the big day do you think?or is the weather there as cold as it is here ?

Oh the clear coat will darken that up some ,but maybe not enough .I can't remember if you was going to use it or not .

What brand of paint are you using. I am just in the planning stages and have been thinking of possible color schemes. None of the colors I want to use have matching paint available pre-made. I'd hate to have to mix trial and error over and over again.

Hi again. I remixed and got the paint pretty close now i think. Also I didn't put much paint on the top of the cowl because it will be black. The clear coat that I'm using is flat so that will help blend it in. Tom I'm using that acrylic that you buy from the art supply stores for a buck a bottle. I found that even using the same color on different surfaces like fabric, fiberglass the paint looks different. Cyberwolf we are down below 0 with a foot of snow, so it will be a spring event. What do you have for a cub? I just picked one up at a local swap meet, a 1/4 scale Sig framed up, but it's an oldly.

Thanks for the info Rob. A while back I built a Top Flite Corsair gold edition....used the royal blue monokote and royal blue lustrekote for the paint. The lighting where I worked was fluorescent so the colors looked completely contrasting to each other until I brought the plane outside where they matched perfectly. I can imagine mixing paints to match the monokote to look identical will be quite the challenge. I guess I have to expect a lot of trial and error to be involved.

Tom 1178 I was telling rob earlier that sometimes I go to the autopaint store and have them mix me up a spray can of paint that will match every time,so thats another option .but it is a little spendy $12.00 a can But lustercrap is 7.00 and 9 out of 10 times it won't match or if it does theres something else goes wrong .Although I have found a good use for it *Snickers* Ya know them there lines on the highways *L*

Rob I just built a 1/6th scale sig cub ,i'll be giving it away along with two more planes as door prizes this spring at the funfly we have each year over memorial day at Salmon Idaho.

Hi all. Well I finished the painting on the cowl and the canopy and it came out alright. I don't know how long the cowl will last before it falls apart. It might be real quick if I splatter it into the ground. The paint stuck real good with no peeling at all and limited bleed. Can't say enough good things about that Tamiya tape. The Yellow is not a perfect match but it's close enough for me. Well I'll post a couple of photo's after I glue the canopy on then Its off to the next project.
