cmgtech here are more pictures. I got away from posting progress here. Have taken many breaks in between building due to work, laziness, and more recently getting another previously built aircraft in flying condition. Not much left to do, painting the cowl/bellypan and glueing hinges in place will be the most tedious tasks left. After that it will just be finalizing the servo tray, battery, receiver installation. Balancing, and then I get to break in the engine. I plan on being done in about a month or so. I've only flown an RC plane once in the past 8 years so I plan on doing a lot of practicing with my .40 size cap 232 first.

Looks Awesome Tom. Assuming she's straight and the CG is within reason, you should be rewarded with a great flying bird. If you can handle that Cap232, then the Sukoi should be a piece of cake for you! Very nice bird and thanks for the pics

Well finally flew the Sukhoi this past saturday for one flight and three flights tonight. Flew great with no trim needed. I had the elevators set with a little bit too much throw but have since fixed it. Tracks straight and the landings/takeoffs are a breeze. Here are some pcitures.

I hear ya cyberwolf. I can't stop thinking about when the next time wil be that I will get an opportunity to fly. Hopefully Thursday night the weather here should be perfect that night. You ever have problems with the metal screws holding the wing on? After my first flight I checked the tightness and one of them came loose a quarter turn. The other was still perfectly tight. I checked again after the next two flights and they were both still tight. I might drill two holes in the bottom of the bellypan so i can just check them between flights. I've heard of others using nylon bolts to reduce vibration, I'd just have to drill larger holes in the fuselage wing mount. Anybody have any other ideas?

I use the metal screws and at first they did back off a little ,but after that they always stayed tight for me.
I have said this before when I went to the larger engines I also used flying wires on the tail I had one sheer half the horz stab off during flight .I got lucky and made it back on the ground. Since the addition of the wires neither plane has gave me any more troubles in that reguards.
Have fun ya got ya a winner there.

I use the metal wing mount screws - they have come out on the way to the field from vibration in the car (screws were only halfway in) but during flight they have been tight. McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) has thousands of fasteners and I've found metal socket head screws with nylon thread inserts to prevent vibrating loose. Maybe would be good for wing.

I've had about a gallon and a half through my SU26 so far and it seems to fly pretty well with an OS 120AX, Bisson Pitts and a 16x8 APC.

I have no clue why your picture is so big. Haven't seen that yet before on here.

I'll just keep an eye on my screws after each flight, we'll see maybe it won't be a problem. I tightened it after the first flight of the day on the second day I flew, and it was slightly loose but after that there were no problems the other two flights that day. Should be flying tomorrow night, hopefully weather works out.

Looks good Bass1. It looks like you have the carbon gear installed on yours. How much lighter in weight was it with carbon gear than the stock aluminum. I want to install a smoke system on mine but unless I can get the weight down with lighter gear, cowl, bellypan or whatever else.... I think it might be a dog. Apparently I built mine heavy, the flying weight right now is 11 pounds on a bathroom scale. If The graphite gear can knock off 6-8 ounces I might give it a try...I recall a way to install a smoke system using a YS 120 using the pressurized tank to do the work that will save me some weight but it is complex for me and I will only do if needed. The only after market gear I've found so far has been from graphtechrc.com and it costs $50 for the gear for the mains! It was a lot of work to build this plane but I enjoyed the challenge and if I have to I will buy another one before they stop making them (I hope they don't but you never know!, I'd love to buy one just to sick in the closet just...in...case...) I just got an Ultra Sport 40 this past weekend for a wedding gift (I got married 5 hours after the maiden of my sukhoi) and I hope the CG Suk doesn't stop being produced.

Tom, It's been awhile since I built the airplane (2001) and added the Graphtech gear, but it seems that I remember saving 3 to 4 ozs. A quarter pound here and there can make significant difference. The Sullivan Skylight tires or the newer Dubro lights will save some ozs. also.

well i just got back from the field. Flew 3 more times and the screws didn't move at all so it shouldn't be a problem.

That is a great shot.

Has anyone tried to cut out slots in all of the cooling vents in the cowl? Looks like a lot of work but would look good.
