Status: offline 		Thanks for the beta on the gear. i have seen some people have run the carbon ones too. Dynamo told me that because my kit is the first edition, the die-cut parts may fit a little better. one can only hope!
i went through the kit last night and everything seems to be intact. nothing broken after 9 years of storage!

Hold that thought... i just looked at the plans and layed a few parts down for the stab... not even close. i almost laughed when i looked at it... oh my this i going to be fun. the leading outside edge of the elevator on the plans is at least 1/4" out just looking at the drawing!!!

I ended with the same version I started with. It's the new one with the gear on the fuse. The best free mod to do to this plane is to re-bend the main gear to a straight leg, rather than the bow. The bowed gear legs do not give in compression and are more prone to being ripped off. With the legs bent to a more normal shape, the landings are softer and the gear can absorb the other loads better as well. This can be done without changing the deck angle. I highly recommend doing this, unless you are stuck on the curved gear legs to look more scale.

I would try a 17-10 prop on that engine to get more pull at lower rpms, and to get more speed for maintaining a strong vertical upline.

Status: offline 		The only thing to be very careful with is the wing. Mine had some parts that were not the right size, and it made building a bear. If I were to build another one, I would probably replace all the wood in the wing and tail to save some weight. The fuse is all lite ply, so there's not much to save there. It would be really nice to get this model down to 9 lbs, and still have the 2300 on it.

Status: offline 		The only thing you should concern yourself with is symmetry. The radius of a corner will never be considered unless it is different from the other side. Take the time to add the bow to the rudder. It is a trademark of the airplane, and really shouldn't be omitted.

The wing ribs in mine, the plywood ones, were too long, causing a bow in the leading edges of the wing. This is where you should be sure to have the parts fit well before gluing anything together.

Well, things are moving along... a little slowly though. Didn't get much time to work on it over the weekend. busy fixing my basement common area! so far i've got one side of the stab done. everything is matching up for the heights, etc. and i'm just using the die-cut sizes making sure i keep things straight as possible.
i'll be sure to put the bow in the rudder too. didn't see that until you mentioned it and looked at the drawing!

Status: offline 		well i have a rather simple question for you guys. it's late here so maybe i'm just not reading the plan right... but does the bottom Truss Stick(1/8"x1/4" on the Vertical Fin rest ontop of the Stab on the plan. there are two lines drawn there, one slightly higher than the other. i am assuming it does?

Mine is 9 lbs, perfect with the 2300.

Status: offline 		SO... got the wings halves done and am now figuring out how to join them so it's nice and straight. i'm still on the fence about the engine... but am not completely sold on the Gas MVVS for it. i am also thinking of a Saito 150. i've gone back through the thread and have read up to Pg18... and have got lots of good info from it. thanks to all who posted up info etc. although my kit is the 1st. gen... every bit of info is good.
well, back to the build...

Status: offline 		swixtt I have 2 of those planes one has a 160 OS FX that is unreal in power and performance and the other has the Super tiger 2300 while it flys it ok it does not have the power of the 1.6
My 1.50 saito was in 9.5 lb balsa nova and I was not happy at all with it.
It all depends on what sort of flying you want to do with the plane as to what engine will fit your needs the best.

BTW you said you have the first edition SUK with the gear in the wing ,I made the changes to my old plane to put the gear in the fuse and never once looked back.
It didn't seem to matter how well I put it in the wing even the lightest landings would sometimes fold it back.Its something you may want to consider while your in the building process.

thanks for the info. are there any plans around on the mod to move the gear forward? i was in the process of building the mounts pretty strong on the wing and have almost got them completed. i have a set of carbon gear coming for it. did the gear pull through the mount and fold back?

i don't do any 3d flying because i'm just not that good. basic aerobatics,etc. is what i enjoy so i'm thinking i don't really need a huge engine on it.

what size tanks did you run?

Yes the plans are available at Goldberg ,but I made my mods long before goldberg did.
The screws like to pull out of the wood and if they hold the wood splits, or the glue joint fails. I would suggest useing some 8-32 blind nuts on the back and maybe even replace the kit wood with some good 1/4 lite ply.
That gear is so long the mechanical advantage is awful,CF gear will help in the weight dept but the length is still a problem.
However it still is one of the best flying aircraft I have in the hanger, but I knew of several that didnt survive because of that landing gear problem ,folks just got tired of fixing it they trashed the plane, I even gave one away myself due to the gear deal. If you want do the mods to add the gear to the fuse PM me and I can walk you through it.

Status: offline 		yeah i was planning on using some pretty big blind nuts and making some new ply for the mount. i also changed the ribs and added ply to both sides of the rib 2. i've seen the new plans on the 2nd. edition ... are the forces the same when they are moved forward onto the fuse? simply moving them there won't fix the problem but moving them and changing the way they mount should.
i'll have another look at those plans and see if that method is any better. i certainly don't like the gear on the wing...

Status: offline 		The angle is a little different which I doubt if it changes anything ,but the main thing is theres some wood to hold the gear plate in place and a person can add gussets from tri stock ,I have yet to pull a gear plate out of the newer design or my own for that matter .Good luck sounds like your on top of things.
