I want to buy a really good DVD recorder for saving my R/C flyin tapes to DVD as well as archiving VHS tapes and recording programs off the air.

I have a Sony HC42 mini DV camcorder with an iLink (IEEE1394,Firewire) output port. The recorder must have this input capability. It also needs a nice size Hard Drive with decent editing capability that I can use before writing to a DVD disc.

I have been reading about the Panasonic DMR-E95HS, the Toshiba RDXS34 and the Sony RDRGX7. At a glance, the Toshiba seems to have the best features. The Panasonic is compatible with DVD-R and DVD RAM. The Toshiba is compatible with DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD RAM. The Sony is compatible with DVD-/+R and DVD-/+RW.

What about this media compatibility do I need to know? What should I steer clear of? What other units should I look at? What do you use or recommend?

Thanks

Ken

I have had very good success using Pinnacle Studio 9. You can dump your digital video from the camcorder to the computer, edit the video and then put it directly on DVD (or VHS,MPEG etc) if you have a DVD writer.

I recently upgraded to Studio 10 Plus and have spent 2 weeks trying to get it working with no success. I would stay away from the version 10 for awhile.

Ken, go over to Videohelp and look at the left hand frame and under "Lists" you'll see "DVD Recorders", click on that and you can search through all the reviews that have been done on DVD recorders. I personally use a Panasonic model DVR-231-S that I got a couple of months ago. I've burned about 150 to 175 DVDs with it and been very happy with it. You wouldn't want it because it doesn't have a hard drive or wirewire input. But I just record programs off my Tivo and so it works great for that. In fact you're probably going the wrong direction if you're thinking about trying to edit your video with a stand alone recorder. There's no way you'll have the features and functions on a stand alone DVD recorder that you'll have with even the simpliest video editing program and DVD burner on your PC.

Thanks for all the input. I bought a really excellent DVD recorder last July. It is a Toshiba RD-XS34. It works great with my Sony Handy Cam.

Sorry that I haven't replied before now but the SPAM blocking on my Inter Net Service provider was blocking RCU notices.

Thanks
Ken
