I just purchased an airplane with a YS-120 in it. On the engine, it just says YS F-120. Is there a way to tell if it is a 120AC, 120FZ...??

ys-120ac the"ac" stands for air chamber. This is an air box aft of the engine head and above the carburator.

I believe all ys 120 have the same case markings for the past few years, just different appearance of the engine, the ac has an air chamber above the carb.YS Performance can help you determine which it is , go to their website and look at the pictures,at any rate if the motor is in good shape then you will have a great engine.........cuda

The only obvious differences as realized from looking at the engine are the existence of an air chamber and the carb/throttle Venturi bore. There maybe others but I cannot think of any.

Internally the differences are readily apparent. Valve sizes, gas-ported heads, crankshafts and pistons are different on almost all of the various YS 120 engine models.

Thanks to all that answered, I do not have the air chamber, so that elimintaes the AC model. I could not see any other exterior differences. I am not having any problems, was just interested in which one I have, since it was on a plane I bought.

the difference can be determine by the prop thrush washer
[between prop and crank case] they are different

INXS is correct there is a physical difference in appearance of the drive washer on some of the models.

120FZ, 140L and 140FZ same drive washer.

120SC, NC same drive washer, there is a groove around the perimeter. same OD end to end.

120AC, SF same drive washer, no groove, OD steps up in size at the serrated end/prop side of the drive washer.

AC, SF and NC have a 11 mm inside diameter throttle body. No mid-range/idle adjusting needle. Different throttle barrel retaining setup than the FZ and SC.

FZ, SC, have a 14mm inside diameter throttle body.
