Hi Dave,

I'm running-in a YS 160DZ and have noticed there is a fuel leak coming from somewhere towards the top of the motor. Currently I'm investigating the black plastic check valve. I haven't been able to find too much info regarding this device, so could I please ask a couple of questions.

1) Is it okay to run and fly without the check valve.

2) Can I confirm the assembly of the check valve:- check valve top, spring, valve, diaphragm, check valve bottom, (and that's all).

3) I've measured the breather hole in the top of the check valve to be around 1/16" inch (this sized drill passes through the hole.) However on another 160DZ, I observed what appeared to be a much smaller sized hole, more like say a small pin ****. Have you noticed any variation in the size of the this hole on other check valves?

Thanks for your answers.

Cheers,
Neil

1. Yes you can run without it. It is there to prevent a leaking intake valve from making the throttle unreliable, but I don't think it helps unless you have serious leakage in the intake valve.

2. Correct

3. I don't believe the hole size makes any difference, as long as there is a hole.

Hope this helps.

Good flying!

Thanks for your response Dave.

I've been doing a few simple test on the unit when removed from the engine. (Can't do any flying tests until the weekend.)

Using a syringe I squirted water through the unit using two methods, one pushing the water straight through and second pushing and pulling back on the syringe handle. The pushing/pulling or pulsating action resulted in liquid squirted out of the breather hole for a brief time until it then came out of the injector side. The amount was appreciable, visually equal amounts came out of the breather hole as the injector hole. I disassembled/reassembled the unit a few times and repeated the tests. What I got was sometimes it would incorrectly and squirt water out of the breather hole and other times it was good and only squirted water out of the injector side. Don't really understand why the this was happening and there are only a few parts involved.

Anyway I left it at a stage where it was working okay, and I'll try this over the weekend.

Cheers,
Neil

Who knows? Pressure will not pulsate during operation unless you have an intake valve that leaks very badly.
