While the epoxy was curing I installed the 1/8” X 1/2” balsa support trusses that are on the inside of the fuselage above the wing.

After the epoxy on the wing center section cured a few days I did the final sanding with 60 grit paper and then removed the tape. The tape leaves a small ridge at the edge of epoxy center section and that was sanded to smoothly taper into the balsa wing skin.

Lookin' good! It's almost as far done as the Tiporare is.

Hi 8178:

I have enjoyed watching your builds here. I like many others have learned a great deal from the builds. I will be building an Utter Kaos this winter if I get a few other small things cleaned up and would like to use you as a resource for that build. I consider myself a good builder however, some of yours ideas & techniques will take me to the next level. By the way where did you get the RJL engines?

Thanks,

Anaconda

Thanks for the positive input and I’m glad that you find the build info helpful.

The RJL engines are pretty nice and very well made. I found one NIB in the RCU market place (the newest model), one like new on ebay (the newest model) and one new one from Sheldon’s Hobbies. Sheldon’s Hobbies http://www.sheldonshobbies.com/ has them in stock and at a very good discounted price on this link http://www.sheldonshobbies.com/listing/rjl.html.

After rounding the top of the fuselage with a razor plane I used 60 grit sandpaper on a long board to sand the area and then followed up with 100 grit. The exposed edge of the corner triangles are used to judge how deeply the fuselage corners are being cut down and sanded. About 3/16” of the triangle wood is exposed. The idea is to make the top of the fuselage round for the classic Cold Duck lines but not sand through too far.

I’ve been working on sanding the top of the fuselage to a smooth curved surface that is equal on both sides. I use a piece of wood to cast a shadow across the top of the fuselage so I can easily see the progress. As the board is moved along the top of the fuselage you can see areas that need more work.

An update on the projected aircraft weight. With everything together except for the Monokote covering and some of the push rod hardware the weigh is 4.9 lbs. I’m projecting that the Monokote should add less than 5 oz and with the remaining hardware I think the total weight could be around 5.5 lbs.

Work on the Cold Duck has been going slowly while I searched for a better canopy solution. I had ordered a Tower canopy but it was too small and after some searching I found some Sig canopies. I ordered two of the 11” Sig canopies in the WWII version and the bubble version to try. The WWII version looks a lot like the WWII Debolt canopy used on the original Cold Duck so I’m going to use it. It needs more trimming to fit further down on the fuselage but it looks like it should work very well.

I haven’t done much work on the Cold Duck lately because I’ve been focused on getting the Tiporare ready for the first flight.

I ordered some Great Planes standard hooded pushrod exits to guide the pushrods at the back of the fuselage. The position of the exits was determined by projecting a line from the servo arm to the point where the control arm will be. They are in the same position front to back but the rudder exit is higher on the side of the fuselage to match the position of the rudder control arm. After the pushrods were test fitted I glued the bottom of the fuselage on.

The exit guides will be glued in place after the MonoKote work is completed.

8178, I get inspiration from your build threads. Especially your attention to detail. That tank mounting method is impressive in its simplicity and function. I may have to borrow it on a future project.

Thanks for the positive input rainedav! I’ve been following your Falcon build over in the vintage section and you are doing an impressive job.
