Hey Guys

I am a big bird flyer but have recently been looking into getting a funfly to throw in the back of the truck when I don't feel like bringing the trailer. I have an old enya 45, at least 10 years old and was wondering if anyone remembers this engine. It was the top end version ( I think the "cx" on a wild thing. It was an absolute rocket. Way more power than the OS 46 I had on the Sig SE. Since I have not flown this size engine in several years, I was wonder if anyone had any idea how this engine would run with the typical fun fly props. I was using a hatori tuned pipe with the enya.

It would be a great profile motor. From an 11x4 to a 12x4 to a 12.25x3.75. It would perfect for most .40 size profiles out there. Put a nice pipe on it and it would be very rocket like.

Well over here all the OS 46 & 91 are not seen because their gounded - liner problems......

Irvines.. 46, 53, & 72's are common, and the new 39 is smething else !

From what I remember the old Ivine 40 Mk II was a quality item, that lasted years ( and nice in natural aluminium colour too! )

I'd choose Irvine over OS as theres little between performance between them, so the cheaper Irvines make the wise choice?

As for the 53.. go for a Rossi!!

Cheers all

Hi Starskipz, I've yet to see a new Irvine 39 here in my area. What can you tell me about them? Forty size power but only the weight of a 32? Are they putting them on 46 size planes or on 30 size planes? Thanks for any info.

I havn't eyeballed one either - yet!

I would expect to see it in the 'stunt & 3D' machines where power to weight is proirity.

In the '32' class the most popular for p:w seems to be the OS 32 SX.

If the Irvine can whipp that then I've got a plane ready for it!

Will let you know if I get some solid data....

Cheers

I thought I'd found a diamond in Thunder Tiger too but found out that Ace wasn't that customer friendly..I had a 46 Pro barely a year old and did a full throttle low pass over the field for maybe 6 seconds and it locked up....Took it home, opened it up and the rod had broke where it connects onto the flywheel.Needed a rod and the piston was scared. I guess the main thing I did wrong was being honest about the happening.First response from Thunder Tiger was that the warranty didn't cover "over-reving". Took me a while to get over that one and still kinda ticked..It may be a great engine but no more will be bought here...and I don't run any of my engines lean. I really like my 53 Irvine....so far... Thanx.Walt

Try the Irvine 53 with a 12 x 6 APC prop they go great together.

i use the 53 in a 58" Cap weighing 6Lbs and it will hover at 1/2 throttle and climb out of sight.

i use an Irvine special Mix made by Model Technics here in the UK. It has 18% oil and 10% nitro.

Use the standard silencer with the Baffle left in, you will loose power with it removed.

Let me ask yall a question while I'm here. I have this Cloud Dancer,40 size that I've been runing the Irvine 53 in.It was great, but need the engine for an Ultra Sport so,so much for the Cloud Dancer. I had this ole Magnum 45 Pro that was ten years or so old so decided to put it in the C/D. Went to the field today and just couldn't get it to run rite. Finally died on take off and ended up in the fence only breaking the motor mount. So I'm without an engine for the C/D. I have a couple of LA40 but don't really want to go there. I do have an OS 61 SF.Don't make em' anymore but it's brand new.Got it from a guy at the club for $50,never even started. The question is those in the hobby usually push the envelope when it comes to engines they use. I'm wondering what would happen if I put this 61 in the 40 size C/D..Cloud Dancer does come in the 60 size also and is a little larger plane but mine is the 40 size. Is the main reason that too much weight will be up front. This engine is pretty hefty, somewhere round 20oz probably. I had a bunch of led in the nose of the plane with the Irvine and the Magnum cause it was so tail heavy...Is weight the only problem?? Tell me why I shouldn't use the 61 othere than the weight issue..I'll probably have to put some lead in the tail if I use it but that's ok,as long as it will fly,if it will....Go for it??..Walt

If yall need an engine or engine repair,I met this guy named Paul in North Dakota that sells engines and repairs them too when you send them to him.He has a hobby shop and sells most brands...Spar said he couldn't find an Irvine and Paul has them at a little less than Tower prices.I bought my Irvine here at the LHS for 156 and Paul sells them for 135...I bought my last TT from him and have talked to him on the phone also..Nice guy and real helpful...His email is PAULSMOD@aol.com.Also,the engine I bought from him was here in three days not seven to ten business days like the big boys.Thought I'd mention it...Walt

Hi

A bigger engine will give you more power on idle too !

...and sometimes this may mean you cant land until you cut out.

A larger prop nead more ground clearance too

But you have the engine, and if all-up weight is OK, most would go for it. Having too much power is a problem most would want!

Good luck mate!

Opps, You know all the thinkin' I've done on trying this and the prop never came into my mind...Dang!! I think when I had it in the Edge I was running a 12X8. Think that's too small of prop to run on the 61? I may be able to get away with that if it will work as far as clearance or if it's not too small for the engine.Seems like a 12X8 would be on the smaller size of OK props to use on it.Really tempted to go for it.Thanx a mil'.Walt

Generaly a 12x8 should be a good choice for a 61.

I'm not familiar with your plane - slow fly scale, or speed & pattern?

It should give you a good start, then maybe 13x6 ( more static pull on take-off & less max speed ). 12x7 = more RPM & faster top airspeed, but take-off runs may be longer.

Bolly 12.5x6 is on one of my scale aircraft with 61 power & straight fuel.

Have fun!

Hey Star, The Cloud Dancer 40 is I guess,a sport plane or speed. It's smaller than a pattern plane and far from a scale plane. It's pretty stream/lined with good aerodynamics and quiet lite.I think it'll go as fast as the engine that's on it and if it don't,Oh,Well. I'm just real curious to see what it will do, if anything....LOL.It's bound to do something especially after it leaves the runway. Thanx Walt

I still hear a lot about SIG's high prices and complaints about the high price of Irvines in the good ol' USA....
No-one seems to have picked up on the discrepancy of the prices between SIG and places like Quantum for example.

Take a look at the SIG site. You'll see two prices: Factory Direct and Dealer Network. All the prices you'll see at the LHS and mail order places should be based on the dealer network price (with a possible discount). In other words you should pay no more than the dealer network price for any SIG item.

This means you should pay no more than $136.99 for an Irvine .53. Certainly not the $194.95 factory direct price.
My LHS can get me one for $115. At that price its not worth ordering from the UK. Any LHS can order you an Irvine at a decent price. After all
