I finally fired up my Irvine .53.
10% Morgan Omega, 12.25 x 3.75 APC
It really does sound like a 4 stroke during idle...almost hate to take the baffle out or use the tower muffler and ruin that sweet sound.

It seemed a little sluggish during the first flight, but I leaned it out a little and it was much better. I think I'll try an APC 11x4 next and see if I get a crisper transition.

Question: I couldn't seem to get a good idle...
The engine would go up and down on it's own while in the idle mode. At first I thought I was too rich on the low end because it would load up. But I just couldn't get the engine to idle consitantly without it going up and down...any thoughts?

By all means let the engine brake-in before worrying about a smooth idle or real crisp transition, etc. The very best need some running time before they become real user friendly.

I agree. It's an extremely tight engine and takes some running to loosen up. Beautiful engine.

I've flogged the hell out of the .53 for a year..
Decision? Best of the cheap engines... but not that great. Sold it and went back to the .46FX. Far better alround engine.
I'll now wait for you guys to throw stones my way.

Throwing stones? Nah... you're entitled to your opinion, an albeit not very popular one around here.

I think the .53 is the best premium sport engine in this category (.40-.53). That jetstream carburettor is to die for. If I were looking for an alternative, I would skip right over the 46FX and get the TT Pro46 instead - just as well made and far better value for your dollar.

I agree with Volfy -- I will always take an Irvine 53 over the 46FX. Too bad you already sold your Irvine. I have a 46FX I would have traded you...

I would take a OS 46FX and so would at least 20 or 25 others I know. In the last 2 years thats how many new OS 46FX I have seen and and not one Irvine 53. You know, if they are so good and cost friendly where are they. I belong to a 140 member club and visit other public facilities and haven't seen one. By the way I have never seen a dissatisfied OS 46 FX owner.

I have an Irvine 53 on order right now, based on what I have read here on RCU alone!

I have had some older Irvine (pre red case) glow and diesels and they are built very well.

I am looking forward to getting my '53 for sure. All engines need some run time before their full potential (idle, transition and full RPM) can be realised. Give it some time...

Well, let me have a crack at that! I have owned about 16 OS engines, they are very good and I love them! I wouldnt hesitate to buy an OS any day.

BUT, the Irvine has never been marketed very well in North America, compared to the BIG players. For instance, here in Canada, I had to look high and low for a hobby shop that even carried them! They are imported and distributed by Sig and you just dont see them as much as OS, TT and others that take out fullpage ads in the Mags, etc.

The other reason I decided to try an Irvine is I like to try new engines. But mainly because of all the good press I have read about the .53 here...

My best buddy has a TT pro 46, it runs well but the carb isnt without problems. The low speed needle sticks in the carb barrel if you try too low of an idle. But it is inexpensive...

I like to try many brands and then compare!

You hit the nail on the head there ajcoholic. OS is like AOL. It's a good product but just because they sell a lot of them, doesn't mean they are the best. Just becuase you don't see many Jett or Nelson engines doesn't mean they are junk.
There are an awful lot of people who shop through Tower and lets' face it, Tower pushes OS very hard. When a beginner buys a trainer from Tower, he's likely to get an OS with it. A lotta people resist change and they stick with that OS brand for the rest of their modeling lives never venturing far from the beaten path.
I've got maybe 10 or 12 medium sized glow engines and I don't own more than two by the same maker. I haven't had a problem out of a single one except the TT46, and that was really partly my fault. I didn't locktite that throttle barrell screw and it ate the spring.
I like OS just fine but I like some others too. The Irvine 53 is one of my very favorites and I'd definitely buy another.
By the way, I'm curious ramcharger....Where were you when so many people were crying about the OS 46 during the liner peeling debacle? There certainly were a lot of complaints about them back then.

I too have an OS 46Fx. It's on a Tower Uproar #40. Broke it in and havn't touched the screws in nine months. Love it!

I also have two Irvine 53's, a #46 and a #72. Not to mention Super Tigers both 75's 90's and 45's.

Sorry....the Ervines got the ribbon! Hovering Transition is tops and my 46 turns 12400 on an APC 12.25x3.375. The OS46FX does the same only with an 11.5x4. The FX's we have at our field won't come close to the Ervines out of the box and we have a lot of them that were purchased in England for some very handsome fees.

May be if someone other than Sig marketed the Irvine in the US maybe you'd hardly ever see an OS at your field!

Flail Away....

I've been buying engines for quite a few years, and I too have owned allmost all brands (hmm, lets see OS, TT, Magnum, ASP, K&B, Irvine, Enya, Webra, Moki, Saito, Fox, Jett, Merco, HB, HP, and many more!)

Back 10, maybe 15 years ago, the stuff like thunder tiger, and other made in Taiwan stuff wasnt nearly up to the OS standard (or the other US stuff like fox and K&B) and I remember having two .15 thunder tigres in my teens that were crap!
MAN, TIMES HAVE CHANGED! There are way too many good engines to chose from these days. We should CNC machinies make everyone able to produce a well MADE product, and allthough some are better DESIGNED, usually when there is a problem it is the user not the product (usually, there are exceptions, as no maker has a 100% product with no failure.)

I still think the best way to pick engines is talk to MANY people who are using them, read up on them and best way - buy one, fly it and them make up your own mind on what you like! HA!

OK... I got the kinks worked out of my Irvine .53.
The cheap fuel filter I was using was leaking air.
Now, the Irvine idles like a sewing machine and is VERY powerful with a 11x4 and 12.25x 3.74.

I've also owned the TT Pro .46 and an OS .46 FX.

I like the TT for ease of set up and intial run.
For the price, I believe it beats the OS.
My OS is powerful, but finicky...not worth the $40 extra.

However, the Irvine .53 turns the heavy funfly props with much more authority and power (transition and RPM). The Irvine is hard to buy from Just-Engines and Sig is expensive and not user friendly...If Irvine had a reasonalble US supplier, I believe we'd see many more of them at our fields.
