I don't understand why someone always says that there is a possibility of losing this hobby if someone dies in an accident...when people die in skiing accidents, which they do almost every year and more like every year, you don't hear talk of closing down that industry. Why be worried about RC planes? People die all the time from stupid things so why should RC be any different.

Well that sounded kinda stupid!!
Your taking your own risk when you ski..There is not nearly as much risk of hurting someone else when you ski.. The price of skiing is goin to keep goin up because of the price their goin to pay for insurance because of people getting killed!! The price to have AMA is already crazy and it's only a secondary insurance..
Nobody is goin to let us have flying fields in their town because of stupid acts of flying like that!!!
THINK OF THAT WHEN YOU SPEND HUNDREDS OR THOUSOUNDS ON A PLANE AND CAN'T FLY IT ANYWHERE!!!!!!
And I'll be thanking the guy that messes it up for all of us!!!
Later

Com'on guys, the actions of one person is not going to spell the end of RC flying for everyone.
I saw a story the other week about a plane crash at an airshow that killed 80+ spectators. There are still airshows.
Plenty of spectators have been killed at car racing events. There are still car racing events.
But these are big time events I hear you say. Well last year a few spectators were killed at a nearby drag racing come and try day. There is still try drag racing days.
If there was an accident at that party and someone was hurt or god forbid killed this would not spell the end for RC flying. While its not good publicity, it would not be the end.
Unfortunately people have been killed by RC planes before (I recall a young girl killed by a heli several months ago in England) and no one is trying to stop model flying.
I am in no way saying that everyone should go hover their planes around a group of people but to use the argument that an accident will be the end for RC flying is Ridiculous and un true.

I would personally love for Yuri to respond to this thread . I think there's too much bashing here. While his action was not the most prudent (hey, how are / were you guys when you are in your late teens / early twenties with a little bit of booze?), the are not completely reckless either. It was a calm day, and if you look at how he TR, the plane was not even rolling back and forth. Barring somebody plunging him into the pool, engine / radio failure (how often do you get that in a plane that's well proven to be reliable? If everybody is afraid that they're going to get hit or have their engine sputter when needed, then no one would TR on the deck). Besides, it's four years ago, and I'm sure Yuri has grown up since then. It's a different story if he still does that now despite multiple advices and warnings not to do so.

Bottom line, superb skills, poor judgment, take it easy on the guy.

Just my 2c

Josh

PS: I bet over half who criticize him would like to be half as good as he is . Heck, I'd settle for half as good as he WAS

Ya know guys, I've watched this thread for days and have read so many points of view and so many different opinions. I guess you have the extreme left wing and the extreme right wing (no pun intended) stands regarding this video or just about anything that happens in life. But, BoneDoc just summed this one all up, in just four words.

"superb skills, poor judgement"

Sorry BoneDoc, agree with the first part, not the take it easy part. The touchy-feely segment of our society has already created the aura of do as you please with no repercussions because it might hurt the culprit's feelings. To give Yuri a pass opens the door for others with TR envy to outdo him and gain their claim to fame.

Everyone who sees him personally should wag a "shame on you" finger in his face then kiss his feet if being enamored with his flying skills suits one.

What I meant by "take it easy" is the fact that prior to my post, there were 7 full pages of Yuri bashing. How would you like someone to do that for something you did four years ago, that you now realize is dumb? Now if Yuri comes out in defiance and said that what he did is perfectly OK, that's a different story. I'd be the first to confront him with that.

I personally do hate the "touchy-feely" "who are you to judge me" kind of society that we have become. But I do belive in forgiveness and redemption also (after the confession and repentance is made). I guess in my part, I'm making the assumption that Yuri is "sorry" for what he did and he would not do it again (that IS an assumption, but probably reasonably made).

I'm not in any way condoning what he did, but in the grand scheme of things, there are far worse things people have do, drunk driving being an example.

People in glass houses should not throw stones. Dick have you ever used poor judgement in your life? Sounds like never based on what you've said on here. Honestly Dick, you could have figured out the solution to world peace or cured cancer if you put as much time into those as you have in bashing this guy. I think we got your point 235 posts ago.

BoneDoc, well said in your reply #184.

I too hope that Yuri has matured since the talented, yet foolish, flight display.

The guy is a skilled pilot and has many fans, which I have no problem with. It is the attitude that it was okay to endanger people just because nothing catastrophic occurred. If hammering on the guy who did it makes some other wannabe think twice about trying it too, then I will hammer away.

Some fellows hop in here to criticize the thread and writers. That is okay, it is a freedom we have. They are also free to not read this thread if opposing opinions are too intense for them.

Thanks for your input.
