I did not split the cowl must of been someone eles, but I did take it off because the motor mounts were loose, and a good thing I did. all the screws remaining were loose and one missing, one screw at the back of the motor was just hanging there against the motor, I had to take the motor out too and used blue lock tight on the screws, A Note very important, before removing the motor from the mounts use something to mark where the motor position was on the mount , if you don't you are going to have trouble installing it where it was, there lots of play , Not too smart from Hanger 9 ????? unless you are an expert at this the plane may never fly the way it did. also the prop nut was loose. I read this in past tread but I just thought it had to be some one eles problem. This could of been a sure crash if I did not look into it. I still get black deposit going into the gas tank, I notice that when I reclaim the fuel back into the container, now the fuel is almost grey. I check the mixture and it's ok I also run this motor on the rich side because it's new.I had muffler problem and Hanger sent me a new one an I installed it. so far so good it seem to stay tight.

Too bad ! How windy was it ? This P51 of mine is the best to fly on windy days, I flu this plane at wind speed to 38mph and gusty without problems, all my high wing trainers would have a fit. as far as parts? our LHS do not stock those , you want to order from HorizonHobby.com you may get them faster? Good luck let us know how you make out.

Is there a way to just beef up 2 screws at a time so the motor mount doesn't have to come off at any time? I might attempt something like that.

Thanks to this thread it would have not occured to me to take the cowl off and inspect all screws, etc. ...something that I should do with any plane before any day's flying.

I sure will be adding glue to the servo mounts....Reading all these similar faults points to obvious weak points that have to be addressed in the plane.

From my limited experience so far with my Avistar, Prop screws need to be rechecked after installation, as I think there is some play when the prop is being run the first few times...like when you tighten a hose clamp on your car and it's loose next week as the hose settles into place.

I would not try this "only two screws" It's not that hard to take the cowl off, just remember to mark the exact location of the motor to mount before taking it out to secure the screws. You will also have to take the muffler of
also be careful not to rub the set needle adjustment screws, although you can re adjust them after,
Too bad quality control leaves a lot to be desired in some case. Hanger 9 should look into this. bad rep. no sales.
the word get around, this is my first Hanger 9 plane . don't get me wrong I love this P 51 Mustang but I wounder how much I would of like it if it crashed for those reasons. I guess it's all up to us to check them even if they are RTF and new, and from Hanger 9 ?

The guys in my club tried to tell me that Hanger Nine had a bad reputation something about weak retracts and bad bulkheads. They also said that I should start with a high wing trainer that this p51 would be a handful. I guess I made an ass out of myself because I told them that was in the old days and they have had time to work the problems out. I didn't listen to them and maybe I should have but I sure like this idea one plane to take you from training to sport model. And I am sure someone out there got a good one without all the problems mine had. I think mine must have been at the end of the production run and the jiggs were loose or the people who assembled it were tired that day. In spite of all that I still believe in Hanger Nine and that they can deliver a good product. I think Mike McConville is a heck of an engineer with a forward progressive way of thinking that this hobby needs to progress.

Yes I agree this is a good design , maybe the speed brakes were not well thought out , and I wish I was not a beginner because it seems to me itflys much better with out all the stuff on it .......but my skills aren't there yet .......................don't want to "tip stall" which I keep hearing from the guys who know.

Still you get alot for 400 bucks so I will keep flying this untill I solo ,,,,,,,,,,,,crash..........and can't fix
it ....................then maybe I'll get the next size bigger P-51 .............They are the plane I have always liked to look at.

Yes, the backflip method does work great. Some guys just give the spinner a little backward blip. Flipping the prop foreward does work well too, but you have to make sure you flip the hard and fast foreward. A gloved finger is best for that method. With all new props I usually take a piece of sandpaper and go over them to remove any razor sharp edges. (since I do not race)

Took my P51 up yesterday windy a bit 20 to 30 mph while making my first right bank some how because it was too far and also cloudy, I could not tell witch way the plane was left bank or right, I made the wrong stick direction and she plunged down toward earth but I managed to recover about 5 feet before impact wheewww. one time was not enough but the same thing happened again a second time on the next flight, but this time I was up higher and also recovered , the thing with this P 51 is that on cloudy days and too far from away it's hard too see it, the color has all to do with that, but I don't want to change it since it's scale color, so you don't want to take it too far so you can keep track on it orientation. maybe it's only my eyes?? anyone else had any past experience with this plane regarding the color scheme?

Roltech, I removed the bogus invasion stripes which can make the problem worse. I've been planning to put a single yellow or white stripe on the underside of each wing, but have yet to do so. Since our field is somewhat closed in by tree lines on one side and one end, I (usually) stay in close enough to maintain good sight.
Also, I've had some issues on windy days; I suppose it is the light weight and size of the plane and is to be expected.
