QUESTION??? After flying my Nexstar on Wednesday nite (about 4 flights ) I noticed my engine was covered with a blackish brown substance , Ive never seen this before . The Engine ran fine , no problems with low idle as before , it just looks bad with all this blackish brown junk burned onto it . I cleaned it tonite and had to use steel wool and emery cloth , got most of it off but its down deep in the bottom of the cooling fins .
We redajusted the mixture Wednesday nite - is this gunk from doing that - is my engine running too rich ?? Like I Said , it flew fine b ut it did seem a bit slower .

    Anybody got any ideas ??

Yes there is an o- ring where the two muffler halfs come together . My Muffler came loose the first nite I flew it but seeing as how I'm still kinda trying to figure out where I want the muffler deflector pointed I just put it back together , loctited everything (after cleaning both halfs in solvent ). Once I figure put EXACTLY where I want the deflector pointed THEN I think I'll have it welded . This is common problem with this muffler and there have been several posts about it . Some people have used JB Weld and even then its come loose .
When I flew mine on Wednesday nite it stayed tight but I only got one flight in sooooo we'll have to see what happens a little further down the road .

Great weather here tonight.. my son was out flying his Super Cub, and it hit me.. BIG DUMMY.. GO GET YOURS.. duh! It was really a little too dark, but got a half tank burned off before it got totally lost in the darkness. Then it hit me, I havent flown the thing here at home because I dont have a good open area to land, there are BAD trenches right across the runway near center. Too late now, gotta land it before I cant see it. So she set down and finally came to a stop about 8 feet from the fence.. TOO Close!! No doing that agian in the dark.

    Smooreace,
It's funny that you have a spare wing. I've got a wing and a tail and not much else. That's all that's left of my PTS. I may get around to picking up a fuse at some point, but it's not a priority for now.
I ran across something yesterday that I'm sure that you could use. I'll drop it in monday's mail.
    Cheers! BH

Last time I flew I came down a little sideways and broke out one wheel. I think it was ready to go. I gunned the throttle and landed on one wheel and killed the engine. Didn't even brake the prop. But the wire gear broke the block in the wing. ( the second time). So I'm reinforcing the hole area with ply wood. I well make struts for the gear, to the side and rear. Also I'm going to use this ply wood area to mount floats for a float fly next month.

PA BEN; Your plan stands looks like a great idea. Can you post a pic of the complete stand? What distance do you have from front to back? I guesse you could add inserts to make it longer or shorter and not seal the joints. I've got enough joints around the house to probably build one.

    Just an update:

Yesterday I received my receiver from Horizon.... yes SATURDAY delivery! Came with a little note that said something like....Bla Bla bent pins and stressed solder joints, "not worth repairing, so in the spirit of customer service I replaced the entire receiver with a new unit"

I got one flight in agian last night, quite gusty, but the extra wind helped a lon on my short runway. I think that teh broke wingtip that I have been flying with for some 20 flights now is starting to get a little to floppy. In hard loops she always wants to roll to the weak wing, so tonight after drill Im going to swap over to my backup wing and start repairs. I haven't seen a wingtip apart yet, so I post some images for info purposes.

I was sitting here thinking about flying last wednesday nite and the strange discoloring of my engine . I remember that when I fueled the plane the fill nozzel was loose on the fill line and it squirted fuel all over the engine . I wiped it off with a paper towel but maybe I didn't get it all and this substance is actually baked on fuel.
    hmmmmmmmm

I have the same mess on my OS .46 It stared showing up last weekend, and I do know I spilled a little fuel on it when I was filling up. Its very similar to, but not as caked up, the lower areas on the engines in my cars. I think its just burnt castor oil.... a test maybe, put a little fuel in a piece of aluminum foil made into a dish and burn off the fuel, then heat the foil under the oil that remains.. the residue should be similar.

    BTW... I use Byrons 10/20

yup - I think its baked on oil or gas residue- I cleaned it off the outside surfaces with 000 steel wool and a small brass wire brush I use on my guns . I can't get down inside the fins . The process left a few small scratches but nothing as bad as it was .
