Finally flew the "Redeemer" today. I was suppose to go out tomorrow in the AM and get the maiden taken care of. Well, I wake up this AM to a call from my mother in law, she wanted to know if I wanted to come down and fly with my soon to be father in law today. Since the wife and kiddies were on their way back from SC and I had nothing better to do, I said "Sure thang, I will bring tha Stang".

Got to the field and got the Mustang put together and had her sitting out on the break-in table waiting on my "instructor". Since this was the first time it has really sat out in the sun the wrinkles started showing up. Nothing horrible but it now gives me a chance to tighten it all back up. My instructor got there and he went over the plane with a fine tooth comb. Checked balance, checked throws, checked directions, checked to make sure the fuel clunk was free and so forth and so on. He said that she looked very good and was impressed with it as a "trainer". We get it over to the table and fueled it up, range checked it and fired it up. We decide to lean it a little and then let it run for about 10-15sec wide open. I take her out of the rack and put her on the ground and she taxis great through the grass and is sitting on the run way getting ready to spin up. There was a moment of fear, excitement, anticipation and about 40 other emotions going on in my head. He slowly laid the coals to her and the take off was abosultley gorgeous, nice and smooth rotation and then a gradual climb out. If I saw it on a film I could easily be lead to believe it was an actual mustang taking off. He does a few laps trimming her out and stated that it did not actually require much of anything to trim it out. It needed some right aileron and a little right rudder. I am going to fix the right aileron trim by placing a small weight in the right wing servo tray. I may not have got the lateral balance perfect. Well since neither of us brought a buddy cable, he just took it up about 3 mistakes high and asked if I wanted to fly it. Shonuff I did, so I took the controls and did a few laps and tried a few moves. Then my instructor asked me if I was cutting the throttle and I told him no I was not. But you could tell the plane was losing airspeed (even though it was already flying slow). I hand the transmitter to him and the engine dies, deadstick on first flight, needless to say my butt puckered up pretty tight. All I could think is my plane was going to have a very harsh landing on it's first flight. Needless to say Dan (instructor, soon to be FIL) brought her down as nicely as I think anyone could in the situation. The saving grace is that the field I was at was wide open and he was able to get her down in some rather tall grass and there was zero damage, but the engine was UBER MUCHO hot. It had started to rain and as I was walking back to the pits with the plane rain would hit the engine and sizzle. Dan thinks we prolly leaned it out a bit too much and with the engine only having had two tanks through it other than this one it is not broke in enough to lean it that much. So we let it cool down as the rain went on for about 10-15min and then we refueled it and took it back out to the flight line. We richened the engine back out by about 1/2 a turn and ran it for about 20-30sec before taking it back out on the runway. Another gorgeous takeoff and flight. Dan then was bringing her in for a normal landing and absolutley greased it. It was great.. I will be back out there tomorrow..

    yup, lil toooooo lean.

to lateral balance, grab an assortment of samll finishing nails ( very small head ) say 1" to 3" or so.

Pull out the plug so the engine compression doesn't get in the way, hold it from the very tip of spinner, and very back of fus, right in front of the rudder.
probably take two people. You have to hold it lightly, one finger tip if you can, so that you allow it to move easily.
Gently pick it up a few times, if one wing is heavier, it will tend to roll that way, even just so slightly. Try the different nails by laying them on the very end of the wing tip. Keep lifting and seeing what the results are. When you have the right balance, tap the nail(s) into the outside edge, more towards the front, so that nail is facing the fuselage. Shouldn't take much. Mine needed 2x3" finishing nails. The further you can put any weight, front, rear or wing tips, away from the cg, the less wgt you'll need.

You can use a drop of ca to hold in place, a strip of covering if you have, or some clear tape. There is scuff tape that will work great & save the tips for those occasional tip hits also.

Glad it went well, happy flying!

ps- knees knock a little, its ok...we all have at some point

Ya know , sometimes it just doesn't work out , no matter how hard you try "murphy's law" kicks in EX: I did all my around the house stuff on fri. Then I spent Sat On the Harley with the wife and some friends knowing that the weather forecast was good for the WHOLE weekend , YUP watched the weather on Fri nite and Sat nite " BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND "
Thats what they said , they even showed me RADAR to confirm their forcast . Got up this morning , which I had declared as "MY DAY" and charged up the planes and started try and contact some felow club members to meet me at the field to fly . I couldn't get ahold of anyone , but it is a holiday weekend and people make plans and I understand that . So I decided to wait until the heat backed off a little and then go to the field myself . All of a sudden it clouds up and and wind starts blowing . I go back inside and check the local weather , "BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND" is what it said .hmmmmmmmm I continue to pack up my stuff for the field , watching the darkness out of the corner of my eye . The wind picks up and the clouds roll in and just as I shut the car door "THUNDER" grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I unpacked my stuff in the rain put the car away and went inside just in time to catch a "weather update" "BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND" is what it said .
Ya know - we can put a man on the moon but..........................LOL

    I'm ok now .

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. If it's one thing I have found out is the Model airplane community is very helpful and extremely supportive. I picked up my new covering as well as 3 new servos, they didn't hold up too well in the crash. When I took them apart the teeth were stripped pretty badly so I'm going to replace them with some better ones. I managed to pick up another plane on friday, I traded my old HPI Savage 25 for it. It's a Sig Kadet LT-40, brand new never been off the ground. It had a bit left to put together but I managed to get it done for today and make it out to the field. My instructor took it up for the first flight to make sure it was trimmed and good to go then he handed it over to me. What a tame and docile aircraft, we tried but we couldn't get it to stall. On the next flight I decided that I was going to take off and land on my own and that's what I did, 3 times. What a great day!!, it would have been nice to do my first solo with the mustang but I'm not going to complain. One of the other members who also started flying the Hanger 9 mustang at the same time I did, earned his wings with it today. All in all it's been a great day, minus the thunder storm that rolled in and ran us off. I really hope to have the mustang fixed and ready to fly for next week-end. I can't wait to solo with it.

    Have a good one
    Eddie

Its official!! We have a new addict!!! I was just arguing today about how much I have spent on my addiction. ARF PTS $120 DX7 $400 OS46 AX $150( but they screwed up and sent a 91FX instead, so I had to buy the .46 again. We cant have an engine sitting around so 60 size ARF mustang for $150. 2 giant scale plane locally on auction... cant let those go to a bad home.. $100 and $150. Receivers all around.. $300. I though I was staying pretty cheap till I did the math. At least $200 in repair parts..... Drugs ARE cheaper. But less fun.

Eddie... in no time your going to be wanting to build a bigger garage to house your addiction, because there isn't enough room anywhere else to put them all. Congrats on your flights today. That first landing got the knees to knocking again didn't it. Ive burned about 6 gallons of fuel total now, and still feel the pucker factor every time I start an approach. Gotta love it!!

Hope everyone had a good safe 4th. I flew a LOT, shot a LOT, drank... well... not a lot really. And came thru it all with all my finger and toes.

LOL, I'm definitely an RC addict. It started out with a Savage 25 and expanded to lots of cars and trucks a couple of helis and now 3 planes. I picked up a Parkzone Slo V to toss around at the park but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I just ordered a Multiplex Gemini and plan on getting a Hanger 9 Twist 40 in the near future. My wife is going to kill me. Oh yeah I also picked up a small used boat to play around with in the pool. Guess I've got just about everything covered.

My knees weren't knocking but I couldn't get my left leg to stop shaking, it was so bad my whole body was shaking!

Well after having the "Marie" for two years and being held up by medical problems. The first day out a month ago, I had air in the lines and had to take the cowling off and then pulled the servo plug and it brok, so that daywas scraped. Yesterday things changed. I went out early 7:30 with only one other guy there, The changes I had was the orginal 3 blade and speed brakes removed. Change to a 11-6 turning 13K turns and still sluggish. After another flight it was still sluggish so I switched to a 2 blade 7-6 and was turning 16K turns. The next flight was a screamer. I've still got the scoops on, but what a difference. It flew great and soloed, what a feeling. It's a great flyer and I've got to hand it to the G4, it prepared me for this day. I did have trouble with the TO's, enough zig zaging that I lost a wheel when landing x2. I couldn't keep the wheels on, even after filig a flat spot on the axle. Got to fix this one. Went home with the plane intact and that was a great feeling. I did have trouble with the tail wheel, almost wore it out cause it's made of soft foam, pretty cheap. Having flown in 1975 for several years, and moved up to building and flying the Glasair TD for 100 hours. Then designed a tri-gear set up and flew it for another 200 hours. So I've had some expierence flying. I really don't think that this is a real first time flyer/trainer for a newbie. I have nothing against the plane, it flies great. But if you've never flown before ouch! You need a trainer with you. JMHO My next change will be to switch to 30% nitro. Some post back indicated that the Evo really likes to 30% so when I run this gallon out, I'll switch to 30%.

Can't think of anything more fun than flying.

Glasair, good luck on finding 30% nitro. Have you noticed that 15% has gone up around 5 bucks locally? The LHS I frequent told me they couldnt get 30% anymore. I switched my prop over to an 11x7 today and it takes a bit longer to lift off, but it is alot faster now.
I believe its a plane that you can learn to fly easily. some people even struggle with a high wing trainer. Some people just learn faster than others. Ive been into flying for 5 months now and have 4 planes in my hangar. I learned on the mustang. Went to a twist 40, maidened my new P47 thunderbolt today, and im builing a bipe. The guys at the club I fly at cant believe how fast I picked it up. Many of the guys have 20 plus years experience. Im not patting myself on the back by any means. Im just saying, it can be a good plane for someone to learn on. I soloed after 9 flights and have been on my own since. Only had one issue and it was due to a loose muffler. Lesson learned. Took an hour to reglue a few spots. Yes, the tail wheel is rather crappy. I replaced mine before I ever put the plane in the air. Foam and pavement dont go together.
I find it odd that with the rpms your pulling, your not getting much speed out of the plane. Did you remove the baffle from the muffler? It will give you some more power. I also like the sound of it better as well.
I really dont think you will gain alot by going to a higher nitro fuel. I think you will just be pouring alot of money out the exhaust. Just my opinion. If you think it will work, give it a shot. Save the money you would spend on fuel and put a 55 in marie.
Hope to see you at the warbird expo in Aug.

Anyone know what page of this thread the "how-to" for repairing the landing gear block inside the wing would be on? Between my wife yakking at me and reading this thread, it took me about 2 hours to get through the first 15-20 pages. I tried the search and came up with a thread leading back to this thread, but not to a specific page. I know that I'm going to have to cut into the wing in about a 2"x2" square to get to it, but am not sure of exactly where I should. I don't want to mess anything up by cutting in the wrong place. If it was just covering near the gear, I would just cut away, then recover the area, but since it's actually balsa all around that particular section, I want to be sure before I cut (measure twice, cut once).

I made a hard landing Saturday which knocked it out of place on the right wing, but I didn't notice how bad it actually was until I landed after the first and only flight yesterday (Sunday). I grounded it after I noticed, so not to cause any further damage to the plane.

    Thanks in advance.
