Hey 56
The fly in went good even if it was a pretty cold early morning ( 24 degrees at 7:45 am ) But the sun was out all day and it warmed up nicely. Winds were "light and variable" as the weather man says lol.
We had a good turn out but not as many as last year but we managed to raise more money than last year so I guess we did ok.
We had 4 crashes ....Giant size P-51 mustang stalled about 5 ft off the ground , beautiful plane and it was a shame to see it damaged even if it wasn't all that bad .
Hanger 9 Corsair went down hard about 50 yrds off the edge of the field. I didn't see it go down but saw the crew going out to look for it. They came back with it in pieces. I talked to the pilot ( who owns a hobbie shop ) and he said he lost aileron (right) and figured it was a servo either let go or malfunctioned .
One of the other crashes was a guy who was hovering straight up in front of the pilot stations , about 20 ft off the ground and about 20 ft out from his stand and he RAN OUT OF GAS!!! . The Plane (I don't know what kind it was) came down hard and basically broke in half ...
The last crash of the day was one of our members . Flying a trainer and teaching his brother how to land . His plane was coming in from his left , all was well and good , then all of a sudden the plane took a hard right and came right at the pilot and his brother at their station ..... Somebody yelled "LOOK OUT" and I heard the impact which was about 5 ft from where I and several other people were standing.... The plane was destroyed and I talked to the pilot afterward and he said he had no idea what went wrong but when the plane took the hard right and came right at them , he was so shocked that the only thing he could do to keep it from flying into the flight stand area was to put it in the ground ....... Nobody was hurt but the pilot had to duck to keep from getting hit and the plane hit very hard about 4 ft from where "Marie " was getting fuel up Geeeze ......
My Job up until 1 pm was to sell 50/50 raffle tickets ..... Last year we gave away 160.00 ..... this year we gave away 157.00 .... so that didn't change much ...BTW the you all remember the "GeeBee" guy ? His wife won the 50/50 pot lol so maybe the GeeBee will get fixed after all.
We charged a landing fee for the first time and nobody seemed to object to it and I didn't hear any negative feedback as to how the "fly in" was run so thats a good thing .
The club members worked hard all day .... helping to keep thing running smoothly.... helping whoever need help in getting their planes in the air and making sure everything went as planned .
One thing that happened this year that DIDN'T happen last year was I ACTUALLY GOT TO FLY !!! LOL . I was a little uncomfortable flying in front of a large group of people I didn't know, but after I fuel "Marie " and took off .... I was fine . I was doing "whoopty does" and "Oh My Gods" and " What was thats" and all in all the plane flew great and I took her up 3 times and had no problems at all .
As I packed up to come home I thought back on the days events ...... The field looked great , the weather was great , the people who came were great and very generous in supporting our club . The Wives who ran the food stand did an outstanding job and were alot of fun to work with . ALL of our club members did an outstanding at putting this event together and I think they all had a good time too.
I did take pics and I'll try to get around to posting them later on today .....or tomorrow .... or the next day >>lol

TOM

BTW "Marie " was clocked at 63 MPH with stock prop and flywheel on and droops on .
Fastest plane at the fly in was clocked at 102 mph . (sorry , I can't remember what kind of plane it was)

tucker08 -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/5/2008 6:20:55 PM)

WLDHAIR THE FASTEST PLANE AT THE FLYIN WAS A 1/3 SCALE PITTS BIPLANE WITH A DA100 TWIN-OWNED BY LARRY JOHNSON-CLOCKED AT 103MPH-AND BY THE WAY YOU LOOKED MARVELOUS WHILE FLYING- LOL!!!!!!!

wldhair -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/5/2008 9:43:18 PM)

Its about time you got your butt in here and I stand corrected 103 MPH and thanks for clearing up the what plane it was ......... hey Everybody say "hello" to the GeeBEE guy better known on here as "tucker 08"
Tucker 08 is a friend of mine and an experienced pilot who does all those Fancy moves you guys are talking about ...... and then some . But more than that he's all about sharing the knowledge thats he's aquired thru the years . He brings his trailer to the field and its a rolling hobby shop which he is more than willing to share with who ever needs it . Be it be parts or soldering or glueing or just advice and for the small price of an occasional joke at your expense , he'll do whatever he can to help you out .
Believe just about anything he says about flyin ..... but not a word of what he might say about me ....unless,of course , its complimentary LOL

Hey wldhair,
Glad to hear your flyin went great & you got to fly. Too bad a few guys crashed, but that is part of the hobby. 63 mph is very good for the pts with the stock prop, flywheel & droops. When you progress to a two blade prop & no droops you can expect around a 20 mph or more speed increase.
Our fall fly out also went really well. The weather was cool in the morning as expected, but warmed up by 11:00 am. About 20 fliers showed up, some with 2 or three planes. There were 3 of us with mustangs & it looked really cool when two of us were making diving low passes in formation at speed. We too had our share of crashes. The usual landing gear tearouts & one of the mustangs did a cartwheel down the runway on landing. It tore the firewall off but is repairable. I got 5 flights on the mustang & 3 on the corsair with no problems. It was a fun day.

Welcome to the thread tucker.
I hope you get your GeeBee fixed. That is one of my favorite racing planes from the pre WWII era.

tucker08 -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/5/2008 11:44:07 PM)

THANKS 56 CHEVY
I WILL PROBABLY BUY A NEW GEE BEE-I DO NOT OWN A MUSTANG SO I WILL NOT BE ON THE FORUM MUCH BUT I DO READ IT EVERY DAY BECAUSE OF WLDHAIR.
i REALLY ENJOY READING ABOUT EVERYBODYS FLYING AND REPAIR/MODIFING OF YOUR PLANES. I HAVE FLOWN WLDHAIRS MARIE A COUPLE OF TIMES AND IT IS A VERY NICE FLYING PLANE.

I PREFER BIPLANES OF WHICH I OWN 5 RIGHT NOW.

HOPE YOU KEEP YOUR MOTORS RUNNING AND YOUR WINGS LEVEL
TUCKER

CCR,
Now those are some nice biplanes. The German Albatross has always been one of my favorites.

Rained all day here today too. Looks good tomorrow though, to fly after work. I'll have to get the mustang on charge tonite.

Later,
Dan

jim pettis -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/9/2008 4:23:35 PM)

Well, been away for a while, both here and the field. Finally found time to get back into it.

Finally found out just what a tip stall looks like, unfortunately. Came in a bit too slow, tried to flare the landing a bit too much, and from about 3-4 feet up, plane just turned 90 degrees in a microsecond, and put the wing tip and nose into the ground. I heard the crunch from 75 feet away.

Luckily, no damage to the wing itself. Messed up the saddle area on the fuse, as well as the mounting block for the wing screws, but its repairable.

Just another reminder that this plane does like to come in with a little bit of oomph.

Hey I got the engine back for "donnie" yesterday. It took just short of 1 month BUT it was free and I DO have other Mustangs to fly LOL . I just put the engine back in and had to reset the throttle trim and get everything straight sooooo we'll see if the weather holds for next Wednesday . Problem is , it gets dark so early now . By the time I get to the field and get unloaded and set up , I only have a couple of hours , at most, to fly ...I guess winter must be closing in on us . I better start looking for a winter project ... but its gotta be a cheap one , they cut our hours again last week ..geeze .... how do they expect you pay your bills if they don't give you the hours to work.........Don't get me started ....

56 CHEVY -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/10/2008 2:42:13 AM)

Wldhair,
Glad to hear you got your engine back. Yeah, it is getting dark earlier every day, and then to make it worse, daylight savings time ends at the beginning of November. That ends my after work flying during the week.

Well...another PTS mustang crashed this week at our field. This ones totalled. That leaves mine as the only one left out of 4 that started this year. Maybe it's an omen. Oh well, I'll find out this saturday when I get it out for the last time this year.

wldhair -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/10/2008 11:44:03 AM)

Hey 56
So your mustang is the "last man standing " huh hmmmm . Be sure to bring her home safe and sound . What caused the other 3 to go down.
The end of daylite savings time will end my afterwork flying too and pretty much end the season for me.

Pilot error. [:@]

smooreace -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/10/2008 1:53:07 PM)

WOW.... 2 people back from the "Missing" file! Lots to catch up on for sure, but nothing extremely overwhelming except the word of the Mustang being discontinued for the still unknown reason. Im sure we will all find out soon. Glad to see you two back, hope your able to stick around for a while. Its that time of year when EVERYONE is working on planes more than flying them. Its always good to have more seasoned PTS vets around to help out the new guys.

jim pettis -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/10/2008 5:07:58 PM)

Wait...what? Whoa! I didn't catch up on the reading here....they are discontinuing the Mustang?

If so, the question is...do I buy one more kit for spares, or hope I can keep putting the thing back together.....or just move onto another plane when this one dies.

Or is it too late.....ARGH!

wldhair -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/10/2008 11:49:48 PM)

Hey - I called HH last week to check on my the status of "donnies" engine . While talking to the tech I asked him if the Mustang was being Disc ........ he said "no" not that he was aware of . I also talked to a hobby shop owner who was at our fly-in and he was flying the F-22 Raptor (among others) and told him the Mustang was disc >>>>> he insisted it was not . BUT the sales staff at HH said it was ?????? I give up LOL....

Hey 56 Pilot error ???? Must have been "wind shear " LOL

Well it was a great day to fly today...light winds right down the runway & warm temps. Got 6 flights on the mustang & I was having a blast with it. Tried some knife edge flight & I can say, this plane will do an impressive knife edge from one end of the field to the other. Then did some inverted flat spins & some snap rolls. Before I knew it, it was 5:30 & I still hadn't flown the corsair. I got 2 flights on the corsair & it was getting dark so it was time to pack up.

A fun day & no "Wind Shears" LOL[:D]
Dan

wldhair -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/12/2008 3:59:39 PM)

Hey 56
Nothing like a day without "wind shear" LOL I've never tried to do a knife edge with the Mustang or an inverted flat spin>>>>>>> well at least not on purpose . The reason is , I don't know how LOL . I sometimes just get her about 5 mistakes high and just start throwing the sticks around and see what happens . The problem is , as I play around I can really never remember what I did to create certain "moves" LOL I guess I have to start paying attention LOL.
Today was a nice day here but kinda windy so I just had to get some stuff done around the house that I've been putting off for alot of the summer . I really hope I get a chance to get "Donnie" up in the air before the season ends , but right now it looks kinda doubtful ...........but who knows ...

Hi I have a Hangar 9 P51 PTS mustang with a Hobbico HydriMax 4-Cell 4.8V 2000mAh NiMH Battery in it! anyone know how many flights i could do before a recharge? I always charge it up before my first flight off the day so far i have been charging after 4 flights!

gregoryda -> RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?** (10/13/2008 1:24:41 PM)

Hard to say, in theory about 16 flights (2000/125) but it depends on a lot of things, (number of servos, servo draw, length of flights, condition of battery and on and on). I would say to be on the safe side buy a battery voltage tester that puts a load on the battery to mimic servo draw, they are cheap, I believe Hobbico or Tower sells them for under $15. You should also consider buying a charger/discharger so that you can monitor exactly how much time/millamps you discharge and put back in. That way you will have a better idea of battery condition and capability. Just remember if it's a Nicad battery they have a steep curve when about out of juice. NiMh are a bit more forgiving.
