Jay, the MoF 109E was sold to Canadian Ed Russell who, as you said, won a huge settlement against Disney concerning a stolen theme park idea apparently. As a jab at Disney Ed has a small Mickey Mouse cartoon painted on his Spitfire! At any rate, it was too bad the airplane left the US but the good news is that Mr. Russell is not making the airplane a static exhibit. He recently had an airshow which highlighted his collection. (which inlcudes the 109, a Spitfire, and a Hurricane among others) Here is a link to some pics from that show followed by a link to some video of the 109 flying.

Concerning flyable 109s in the US, Paul Allen has one which is ready to fly and may have flown already. I assume the airplane will become a part of his museum in Seattle and hopefully will be maintained airworthy and flown as his Mustang, Spitfire, and others are. Very cool what you saw, Alymcleod. Amazing how stuff you see as a kid burns into your brain. Especially something like that.

Jay, yes indeed. Also that day a Hurricane, a MkXIV Spit, the P47 with the yellow chechered nose and the P51 with British markings flew in formation with the 109. ManOhman...As time goes by, the chances to see these beasts in action get thinner.

I believe that Paul Allen also has a Me 262

Indeed, the former Planes of Fame Me-262 to be exact. Rumour has it that it will be airworthy but few people think it will actually fly. Something to do with the notoriously unreliable powerplants! Mr. Allen has accrued a collection of warbirds that is quite extensive. Most are being restored in various places around the world but he keeps much of what is going on shrouded in secrecy. Needless to say, he has become one of the most prolific collectors of vintage military aircraft in the world.

A replica Me 262 was tested at Paine Field in Washington last year if i remember correctly. It had landing gear failure. That plane was 1 of 5 scheduled to be built (i think) to factory specs (other than engines) and i believe Paul allen was buying one of those also.

Great links, Chad! Thanks for the additional info.

We had the Hurricane at Camarillo for several months before it went to Canada. It flew from time to time. I was sorry to see it go, but at least Ed Russell is doing something with his planes and didn't just stash them away some where. It wasn't that many years ago that Corsairs were everywhere. Now it's not that common to see one fly because so many were grabbed up and stored as an investment.

I didn't know Chino parted with their 262.

Camarillo still has the MOF Hellcat, Zero and genuine Yak 3 (non flying). I believe the first two are still on the market.

Last time I saw a Buchon, it was being chased like mad by a P-40 over an airfield in Scotland! [:D]

This was, of course, the Old Flying Machine Co's Buchon, in which Mark Hanna sadly crashed in and later died. [sm=crying.gif]

The year before that, Mark and his father Ray were over the same place, dogfighting in the Spitfire and Buchon. [:D]

Have to say that N109W is the BEST-looking Buchon restoration I've seen yet!
