Dave

I am with Scott on pictures but not just on the engine install, I would ask for pic's on all deviations from the kit, and yes it slowes you down but we all learn from it .

Hi Guys, I don't really have anything to add of any value to the thread here, but just wanted to say thanks to those of you who've taken the time to post advice and photos. Here where my project stands at 5 weeks.

Kit Mods: I've airfoiled the tail feathers and plan on having the outer wing panels removable much like the arf version.

Hi George

What brand of retracts do you have ?. If you have Robarts I have been told they will re fit or you can get the kit but I don't know that first hand
Give them a call.

George,
The company is named Down and Locked in NC.
http://www.downandlocked.com/
It is the same group that is supplying the electrics and controls to Robart.
I got a quote for converting my new set retracts for my Corsair.
It was not cheap..

Good to see this thread is still kicking. Right around the time of my last post, the wife and I put our house on the market so that required the garage get picked up and organized and the Corsair got shelved. Now in a new house, but with an over-cluttered garage due to not having a storage shed for all my outdoor equipment yet. Hopefully I'll put up a shed this winter, and can get back to the Corsair. I originally wanted to do a full detail (lights, cockpit, sliding canopy, pilot, you name it) but if I can just get it finished with some very basic panel lines and gear doors along with the replica engine up front I'd be happy with that. I just want it to fly.

I have been waiting for the electric's from Down and Locked for two years. At first they did not have them but was working on them. Talked with them two week's ago and they said they now have some but were out of stock. So now I'm on a list for when they become available again.

George, Robart also offers the conversion to electric. Sold as a kit and cheap enough that I might go with them myself

Hey Guys I've finally got the wing spar joiner basically put together. Everything is just tacked or dry fit right now, so before I go off the deep end can give me your thoughts on my design. Criticism and recommendations are appreciated.

Hi Canvasback

looks good, but what are your plans on gear doors etc, you may also need a secoundary alignment point, and you may need to make the green lined rib out of lite ply.
I like what I see, but like, I like to say plan at least 4 steps ahead of your work so you only have to take one step back from time to time.

From what I see it should not be to big of a deal. I would temp install a retract with what ever wheel/tire you will be using and move ribbs as necessary for about 3/16 clearance and re make them from lite ply That will give you the box sextion (spelling) hehe you will need then pull the retract and go for it

There is also another thread with good info on plug in wings

Hope this helps

I too am building the TF Giant Corsair kit and have nearly completed the construction stage. I do have a question on the Robart 148 retracts. I know you can adjust toe in/out with the set screw on the struts which will also allow you too adjust the length of the strut. So my question is, what is that length susposed to be? Can someone who has these retracts measure theirs (the actual strut length) and let me know?

Best,

Gary A

Hi arsenaga aka Gary

Your strut leg/strut lenght is determined by the wheel/tire you will be using, you need to clear the rear spar by about a 1/16.

Hope this helps

Got the Corsair out today after about a year. Finally got not one, but two successful flights and landings. Really like how she flies now that I got the technical bugs worked out.

Nice way to take advantage of the unusually warm weather!
I just picked up a TFGS Corsair at a swap meet so I'll be putting a G62 and radio into it so I can play!

Unfortunately the weather is gonna cool off here this weekend so I won't be able to fly it.

Don't know why I had so many problems in the past, but after 1 near crash on landing due to flap failure, and another crash landing due to erratic behavior, I found that my bird did not like my power set-up.

First set-up, I was using a 5 cell nicad pack and kept frying the flap servos which was the problem on the first flight.

Second setup, I went back to a 4 cell nicad pack. No longer fried any flap servos, but when I got it airborn, I had very little control and fought it all the way to a crash landing that did little damage other than breaking both retracts off and damaging one of them. It appeared that the servos could not hold with the 4 cell pack.

Final set-up, I put in a 6.6v 2100mah LiFe pack and an Arizona Sahara regulator. Now all is well. Servos have holding power and they do not get hot like they did with the 5-cell pack.

Have to tweak my aileron and flap settings a bit to compensate for it wanting to roll left a little bit at neutral trim, and I think the bird will be a great flying plane. It was a blast to finally fly without it being so out of control that even an experienced pilot had trouble getting it on the ground.

Aceisback,

I plan on using a large sub-c  5 cell Nicad in my TF GS Corsair.  What type of servos did you use in your flaps, the ones that failed?
Also did you use the hidden control horn for the flaps as per the manual?  finally, how free do your flaps feel.

I just installed Hitec 645 HI torque BB MG servos and do get some buzz up and down, a light tap of the control serface and it goes away, but i can't say I feel totally comfortable with that.

I installed the control horn as per the instructions, except I used a nylon horn instead of the plywood one,  and used screws and glue to attach.
But the leverage that this hidden system has seems very poor,  like the servo has to work very hard.

Anybody else had problems with the flap linkage?

Tom

Tom

I used Hitec 645 mg's with the sub "C" and a matdh box to get the angles rite on and don't have any problems at 45 deg's captive ball links in the wing and tight holes in the flap

Hope this helps
