Bob,

Are these pics of your CURRENT buildup, or of your previous GS Corsair? I should be posting pics later tonight as I am in the middle of sheeting the top of the fuse. I have been using one of my smaller Forstner bits to lighten the plywood around the stab mount and the rear tailwheel area.....

Bob,
Looking good.

The wing and build look similar to the 60 size kit. I found this stage to be about the hardest part in terms of keeping everything square and getting the proper alignment and fit of the retracts. I used CJ's and they only rotate 90 deg so there is a tradeoff between how far forward you want the extended wheel in relation to the wing leading edge (to prevent nose over and proper scale look) and how well the wheel buries in the wing when retracted. I believe the Larger CJ units also only rotate 90 deg.

Considering the importance of this area it's too bad TF didn't make a jig for us to use during this part of the build.

Pete

YES way too many similarites` to call the 2 sizes of T.F. CORSAIRS totaly different.Lots can be done by scaleing up or down to suit the plane, that a person is working on,,,D.B.

Rocketman- I noticed from other threads that the full scale wing incidence is actually 2 degrees positive. Maybe this would help in keeping the wheels forward while still getting full retraction into the wing?( Just guessing, haven't started yet.)

rt3232- Thanks for those muffler pictures, looks like lots of possibilities for scale exhaust and sound reduction. JD.

I will add one more thing on my new build I will plug the exhust ports about 40% this will still give me more port than is on original muffler and should reduce sound a little more...

is the first one unrepairable. fuse looks ok firewall unattached and rt wing damage. i bet you could fix it. If you loose power keep nose down and belly in do not drop gear or flap. less damage. that rough plowed field probably did more damage than if it was grass. good luck on the new build

Looks are realy deciving, as I took keep it light approch, and just covered with ultracoat. On the fuse from the fire wall back to cockpit it was balsa in bag, the wing was in better shape but in the post mortom the main spar was a total loss, a bit of history 7 flights and it was flying buetifuly came across field for a pic shoot at about 5' 1/2 throutlejust started a clime and left turn away from the field at about 30' altitude the engine qiut the rest is history
In my research on corsairs, the first hand comments on engine failure was GET OUT as thr real bird had the glide angle of a rock even if you maintained air speed your rate of decent was extremly hi.
So its build a new one.

I my limited experiance most finishing epoxy's work well, and from reading between the lines in the threads it is the weight of cloth that is the bad guy. I have used some 1/2 oz to the yard, vary difficult to handle but once you get the hang of it it is do able. Don't khnow if this helps, but thought Iwould offer it any way.

The center section builds like a brick "S" house except for the need to add doublers to the spar where you notch them for the retracts.

YEAH once ,you laminate(no less than 30 min.epoxy),clamp and let cure. It`s a very strong structure.I Bet, that a person can stand on it!!!The only way that will fail is a serious crash(but I doubt it),or builder error by not using the proper procedure,or bonding agents (more likely)......D.B.

no worries, just read an article in the TF website on the build, the writer stressed there were several sections that required reinforement.

cheers

I lust for a TF / GS F4U but, having just finished my newest plane this week, there's no way I can swing it until after the 1st of the year. I'm content to wait, but I'm concerned that TF will pull this off of the market before I get mine.

Has anybody heard any rumors about TF running this GS kit for only a short time?

Thanks much,
Mike

Mirwin, I too felt the same way about buying the Corsair, but I found out that Tower is doing an easy pay event (ie cost is divided into 3 payments, NO interest charged!!!!). Missed it once so this was too good to pass up, especially with $30 if you order other stuff to hit $300. So to make a long story short, Bossman, thanks for starting this thread, I'm sure I'll be refering to it when I start mine around next year or so?

Dave & all

I did limited test sampling on glue strength elmers, tight bond, gorilla and epoxy 5min and 30 min, I used the same size pcs of lite ply with a 1inch square of glued surface, all samples were let dry 48 hous. I wont give all the details . But the results were in shier they all were with in 10% 0f one another, Oh one outher thing all samples were weighted. elmers and tight bound failed at the loest settings, gorilla glue and the epoxie's were with a breath of being the same but the gorilla turned out to be the lightest buy about 20%. I did this just to convince my self that gorilla glue was a use able glue in my building process. so I have used it in all laminates in this new build

Bob T

When my computer H/D crashed I lost the detailed report with all the numbers, so don't ask

so Bob,

are you saying I should be using Gorilla for maximum strenght AND lightness? I have my Titebond in the handy syringe, but will gladly switch to the Gorilla stuff if it is lighter overal - especially considering the amount of glue used in this kit....

btw, I PROMISE to get several pics up of my fuse progress tonight...
