For those who are considering Sierra Giant Scale gear for their TF Corsair project, but have never seen the gear, I offer the following photos. The struts are 13/16" diameter. I'm sure these retracts will easily handle the 30+ pound finished weight many builders of the TF Corsair report. If the new Robart 836s with heavy-duty Robostruts are this rugged, they may be worth investigating.

I may have gone a bit overboard with the gear mounting structure, but I never want to worry about the gear tearing out of the wing due to a rough landing or catching a wheel in a ground squirrel hole at the edge of the runway. The holes and T-nuts in the ends of the spar are for mounting SIG wing joiners.

Hi Jdunstan

That gear looks great, but I have a coupla of questions and I asume you are building a T/F G/S corsair. It looks like you have the beems set per plan, did you do alay out to see if the axle will be ahead of the L/E, and will the mounting hdw be under the skin mtl ???, You might want to shave those beems if your going to have strut and gear doors.

Also how much up strok do you have in the gear??

Cheers bob T aka rt??George

Bob T:

Yes. I am building a TF GS Corsair. The gear mounting beams are raised about 3/16" from the "stock" position and tilted down at the aft end about 3 degrees to keep the wheels below the wheel well skin surface when retracted. The 13/16" strut still clears the top of the notch in the spar by about 3/32", but I had to widen the slot to accommodate the strut.

With the gear housing 1/8" aft of the aft edge of the leading edge and raised in the bay as high as possible without interfering with the top skin, the pivot ends up about 7/16" aft of the corresponding location shown on the plans for Robart 148 gear. I could have located the gear right against the back of the LE, but I wanted to leave a space to mount the hinge plate for the strut door. This pivot location, 7-1/4" from the pivot to the axle, the 95 deg swing angle of the gear plus the 3 deg tilt in the beams places the axle about 3/4" aft of the leading edge. This is probably not scale geometry, but I am building this plane for sport scale only, and the axles are still well forward of the CG so I am not concerned about the plane nosing over. My experience with my smaller TF Corsair, which weighs about 11.5 lb with an OS 120 Surpass III and Sierra 100 degree retracts is that the plane lands very lightly and at a relatively high angle of attack, with about half of the flap deflection called for in the plans.

The maximum stroke in the oleo's is about 5/8".

I would like to hear from others about their experiences landing the TF GS Corsair.

jdunstan,

I want to get this right. Did you say the axle is 3/4" aft of the leading edge when the gear is in the down position? I already have my Robart 148's For my TF Giant Corsair but am thinking of building a 100" Meister Corsair. It will weigh about 40 lbs. How much weight are the gears you have rated for and how much did they cost? These are pictures of the Meister.

I hope that 3/4 aft of the L/E was a mis type from everything I have found the axle should be right at or just ahead of the L/E T line dwg's I have olso show this position

worked on my inboard mounted flap servos most of the weekend.

decided against the rotating linkage for the ailerons due to time to experiment and research. I have a slop or play in the control surface movement concern. I also don't fully understand some of what the site tries to explain about the pocket the linkage rides in. I am interested but was looking for something else .... I think

not checking off many steps in the manual because I have been working on customization and layout of the wing. I have also been planning, shopping, and sketching up a lot of details.

Only got 15 hrs or so in building this weekend but I got a lot of plans laid out.....I think

I have some pics of my wing coming soon.

Found some 1/2" split flexable plastic conduit to use for a servo wire chase in the wing......purfact

going back for another pass before bed.

give me a no. too! GOT A QUESTION i have the nav light and strobe set from wingspan.I have a 6 channel setup. These are set to plug into a rx channel and turn on and off with a channel. Problem is i dont have a extra channel. Im using a y to make the landing light work with full flap. Any ideas as to how I could make these work. I cant just plug them into a batt pack .I was thinking of a seperate rx and radio for the lights.
They are just too incredible to leave off very impressive. If there b-17 is as impressive ill have one soon

Bob:

It may be time to bite the bullet.

I just made another full-size layout of the gear installation as it would be with Robart 148s mounted per the TF plans and with the Sierra retracts mounted as-built. The first thing I found is that the Robart website advertises the 148s as "100 degree", whereas the assembly drawing for the 148s is labeled "1/5 scale 90 degree rotating retracts" and the drawing shows the swing angle of the strut to be 93 degrees. The mounting rails are canted down at the aft end by 3 degrees in both installations. The TF drawings show the pivot shaft of the Robart gear 1-1/2" aft of the LE.

If the Robart 148s swing 100 degrees, per-print installation places the axle right on the leading edge. If they actually swing 93 degrees, the axle is about 9/16" aft of the LE.

Because the pivot of the Sierra gear is located 1-1/4" aft of the front of the housing versus about 7/8" for the 148s and because the height of the Sierra housing necessitated shifting it aft slightly to clear the top wing sheeting, my installation has the pivot about 5/8" aft of the theoretical location of the pivot for the Robart gear, or about 2-1/8" aft of the LE.

Here's the rub. My latest layout places the axle of the Sierra gear, as-built, about 1-1/4" aft of the LE. I could with some effort shift the gear forward by just over 1/8", but at this point I don't think the change would be worth the effort.

I am not much concerned with maintaining scale strut geometry because the 4-1/2" wheels are already much smaller than correct scale. My only concern is whether my current axle location creates a serious potential for nose-over. If this is the case, I will have to consider returning the gear to Sierra for modification to 100 degree swing as is used in their retracts for the TF 60-size Corsair. This would at least get the axle forward to about 5/8" aft of the LE.

I would ask for further input on this matter, but I know I don't need to ask.

Jim

Gibbs #4:

See my reply to Bob re my gear geometry.

Sierra does not provide weight ratings for their gear. Besides, I'm sure the Meister Corsair requires longer struts than the 7-1/4" struts for the TF GS Corsair, and the Sierra gear has the strut pinned to the steel crank assembly that controls its rotation, so they must be matched at the factory.

I suggest you contact Darrell at Sierra for his recommendation and pricing (http://www.sierragiant.com/products.html).

Jim

O.K. guys I got a problem, but first of all the spring starter is DA BOMBDIGGITY. I took it out today and it was great. Well worth the 50 bucks Now the bad part for some reason my gas tank does not seem to completely empty. The engine running did not empty it and I could not suck it all out with the pump. The clunk is where it should be and everything seems to be set up properly with the plumbing. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't think there is a hole. I will check it all over and see, but everything is new. What size tank are you all using?
