Gibbs,

I just went to RCScaleBuilers and had no trouble loging into their site. I don't know............... I've met some nice people over there, I don't think anything is worth giving up on. You'll like the Don Smith models, no matter what size you choose. They were my first choice (the 120" version) but the Meister that I bought was NIB on EBay for way too good of a price for me to pass up. Let us hear from you when you start your Don Smith Corsair.

Thanks fo any replies,

99% of the time, the log on problems are a user issue, not our site.
I just looked at your profile, and nothing is out of the unusual.

sometimes guys forget their password, or log on name, that happens alot.
also your cookies, your OS, or pop-up blocker security levels will not allow this
sometimes as well.

on the left hand side of the main page is a FAQ section. in their it will let you know
about all these items. read it and try it. if you still cannot get on, PM here on this
site and I will get you dialed in.

now, back to the Corsair

It's worth figuring out. There are some great build threads over there. If they could develop a decent search feature, the site would be world-class.

Hello, again fellow Corsair lovers.

Thanks for the compliments. As I said in my last post, I've learned a lot from this thread which I think really helped me to accomplish this. As you all know, it's a big project and without the smart folks here, I would still be building. Or possibly still crying over an unsucessful maiden. BTW, there are a lot of great looking Corsairs being built and I look forward to hearing about everyone's maiden.

A friend took a bunch of pics yesterday. He's uploaded them here.... http://picasaweb.google.com/tom.hastie/CorsairMaiden The only unfortunate thing is that given the time of day, most of the pics are back-lit. Ah, well, I'm sure I will take more pics of this bird in the air and if you folks will permit, I'll post the good ones here.

I guess I left our a few details....... The final AUW is around 27lbs. I'm honestly shocked as I didn't really do anything special to keep it light. I don't have a ton of faith in my scales so I plan to confirm this weight in the near future. I ended up putting a spacer behind the engine which puts the thrust washer about 1" further ahead than shown on the plans. I didn't want to have to add too much dead nose weight. I'm sure that putting the engine 1" more foreward is responsible for the fact that I only needed 11oz's to ballance. I know, I know, it certainly isn't "scale" and at the risk of offending the scale guys here..... I don't care!! From the beginning, the plan was to build a plane that looks like a Corsair and that flies well. A plane that I won't be afraid of flying as often as I feel like. I have no intention of keeping this plane in the "hanger" too much. Someone a while back mentioned that these planes were quite often a little "rough" around the edges. I couldn't agree more. I had my friend who did the paint really have some fun and "weather" it as much as he felt was right. I think the result is quite realistic. He even painted on some battle damage!! The other benefit of all the weathering is that I'm not paranoid about hanger-rash. A little bump here, a little bump there just adds to the look!

The CG is close to 5 and 3/8" back from the leading edge at the fuse. That's with the gear down. Gear up, the CG shifts back a bit. Didn't really measure it, to be honest. Didn't feel like it moved back that much and I'm used to flying 3D aerobats with a more aft CG. In the air it didn't feel very pitchy at all. Honestly, in the air it felt much like a typical sport plane.

I flew the whole flight on "high" rates. At least, the high rates specified in the manual. Honestly didn't think to try low rates. Roll, pitch and yaw all felt pretty natural. Also given that I came pretty close to hitting the center-lline on landing with a decent cross-wind gives me the impression that the rudder is pretty effective.

Keep in mind, all these comments are based on one flight. I might alter my opinion a bit as I get more stick-time. Let it be known now, that I reserve the right to change my mind

Just got an e-mail with a few more pics. I'll post them here. Sorry about the grin on the last shot. Safe to say, I was a little bit happy at the time.

I guess that's about it for now.
Cheers,
Dave

Question for any one I have started adding lights to my corsair ( after though ) all the lights are easy to do except the landing Light (AKA approache light) .how can i get the landing light in the leading edge with out weakning the leading edge and opening the wing back up ?I would like it to look half way scale but that would take out a lot of wood .If the wing wasnt cover it wouldnt be a problem.

Hi Devens

I used a piece of 3/8 a/c ply in the fuss box and pined with 1/8 dowel 1 or 2 places each side, then used soft mounts per plan but subbed kit ply for a/c ply, you can lookat page 3 post 54 = or - a coupla to see the bask side and stuff hears a pic of it as it is now

cimara,

If you don't have the wires for it already run it would mean really cutting up the wing. If you have them run then the only thing I can think of is cut a small hatch in the bottom skin and epoxy a 3" long piece of 1/8" ply the thickness of the LE from rib T1 to T2 on the TE of the LE. I had my wing open and still do on the top and epoxied a balsa block between T1 and the first center section rib. I drilled small holes in the balsa so the epoxy could absorb into the block. I put a lot of epoxy in that area and the same on the other side for the camera. I used a small key chain maglite for the cone and then made a styrene box for the scale look. I put clear styrene on the face of the box. My box is just big enough to fit the chrome cone inside from the maglite mentioned earlier. It is just under 1/4" deep. I will have about 3/16" of the LE and the 1/8" ply behind it. Next I am going to use large T-Pins to make holes all around the camera box area about 1" on each side and behind the box in the balsa LE and soak it with thin ca to strnghten it even more. Was the lighting a last thought after you already sheeted the whole wing? Maybe just make the approach light look real but not operable. You could do all this from the outside and not cut into your wing except for the light box. They only used it to takeoff and land anyway. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If you need pictures of how I beefed up the LE if your cutting a hatch I'll post some.

Barry

Barry it was an after thought to do the lights .I thought about just drilling a hole Big enough to put the led in but thats what it would look like an led stuck in the leading edge.Heres a thought i had last night and it was to put it on the gear doors i know its not scale but very few people would ever know what do yall think of that idea ?I realy dont want to hack this wing up
