okay, here we go. many of us recently bought the newly re-released Top Flight Giant Scale Corsair - GREAT! Someone had asked the question if the 86 inch (wingspan) version was just scaled up from the 62 inch model. I have both sets plans (and also some red box plans!) and while there are definite similarities, there are very obvious additions to the larger model for strengthening (ie 1/4 inch square balsa diagonal bracing in the fuse, hinge blocks for the Robart type hinges, motor mount design to name a few), but overall, the GS Corsair is very straight forward in its buildup, typical of the Top Flite Gold Edition models.....

I guess first off, we should do a roll call - list what you have planned (or undecided) for your specific Corsair. I'll start off....

Engine: Undecided (I have never done a gasser - I need some input here)

Retracts: The Robart 148s and associated tailgear (again, if someone has a better idea, I'm listening)

Wheels: Robart aluminum hubbed 4.5 inch wheels (is this too small for this plane?)

Finish: My typical .75 ounce glass cloth with Deft polyurethane (not the water based stuff), possibly latex, PPG 2060 dead flat clear for fuel proofing.

Markings: I am a big tri-color fan and will probably do one of the Jolly Roger themes, if not, I'll fall back on good ol' Pappy Boyington's #86 bird.

Details: I would like to at least add panel lines, simulate the fabric covered surfaces, including the outer wing panels, hidden access hatch for r/c and fuel hookups, scale gear doors, cockpit kit, and anything else others may come up with.

okay, that's my outline - who's on-board and what do you have planned?

Engine: First time gasser here also. Most likely will order a G62 but low noise is a priority.

Retracts: Robarts which are scheduled for late June arrival.

Wheels: Manual calls for 4.5". Just looked at Robart website and noticed huge price jump when going from 4" to 4.5". Open to suggestions on that.

Finish: First time to try fiberglassing. Undecided on Poly vs Z-poxy so far. Also like to try the latex.

Markings: WW2 three color Marine F4U1a.

Details: I'd like to concentrate on a nice cockpit with a sliding canopy. And a first try at realistic weathering.

Nice thread Bossman, hope everyone has their digital cameras fired up!

I lust for a TF / GS F4U but, having just finished my newest plane this week, there's no way I can swing it until after the 1st of the year. I'm content to wait, but I'm concerned that TF will pull this off of the market before I get mine.

Has anybody heard any rumors about TF running this GS kit for only a short time?

Thanks much,
Mike

weight is an issue i want to fly this bird not sweat every to and landing . G-46 robart retracts same as in my pica p-40. I would love to do a baa baa black sheep corsair!. glass very carefully added with thinned epoxy. I may try the deft poy method whichever is lighter! Scale gear doors may be a pain unless i find a layout on here as to how to do it with minimum weight. All panel lines and rivets.

OK guys here goes, If you are planning on a full house aircraft, ie glass , cockpit, pilot , pannel lines, rivits, gear doors etc, go with nothing smaller than a G-62. I have an Q52 on alcohol that flew well but little reserve. F4you used a Fox 3.2 and had simular results. He now has a D&B 3.7 twin in his and it cruses at about half throttle. The G-62 will fly it very well. Also you will have to add weight,( A LOT) to the front of the plane. So a heavy engine is preferable. you can buy wheels from Aerotech models also for about $95.00 a pair for aluminum scale wheels. Have them on my TF Mustang. I used the sliding canopy kit from Iron Bay on mine. F4you came up with a powered canopy on his. Neat.
As for the gentleman wanting to wait to buy the kit. This is the last run of these kits, and when there gone they are done. Get one now or you may never have the chance to buy one.
We also installed internal control linkage in the wing for ailerons and flaps. This method is featured in High Flight a few years ago. Volume 22 no.1 Spring issue 2001. also use the articles GC, not the one on the plans. This will creat a tail heavy aircraft. The airticle suggests a 5-3/8 inches behind the leading edge of the wing for the GC point. I can attest to that being a good setting. Plane flies like it's on rails, and lands very well with full flaps. Do NOT attempt to land with out flaps if your model is heavy. Mine came in around 31 pounds full up. Had to add 4# of lead to nose.
Use a bigger engine for weight.
Also make sure you have at least 45 degrees of flaps, and hinge the flaps in a scale manner, not like shown in plans. That will only give you about 35 degrees.
Also you will have to modify the wing tips to get a scale apperance.

if monokote is applied carefully it can look nice. you must spray the film with clear to seal panel lines ect. ultrakote is better i hear. I really like to paint and think if I use little resin it may work.
I have a long way to go before I start mine

I'm not sure when I'm going to start construction but here is what I have planned. I have everything but the pilot, cowl, and muffler.
G62, custom exhaust for scale outlet location.
Cowl from Stans Fibertech.
Right now I have CB wheels, and I may get Vailly Aviation hubs for them.
Robart retracts mains and tail.
gear doors: I'm going to try the spring loaded sonictronics hinges with some kind of a line that the tires press on to close them.
Cockpit kit, engine kit, both top flite.
Hitec 645MG servos for flight surfaces.
concealed linkage for surfaces a la Chris Spangenberg's High Flight article
concealed hinge gaps on tail and wing.
.56 oz glass cloth with thinned epoxy application (may try water based poly, not sure)
Latex paint, hopefully tri color scheme.
Not sure on graphics yet.
All for now, looking forward to everyone's input.
Sam

Tis another day, and things are a little clearer. Just for info this will be my secound T/F Giant Corsair.

I am useing sullivan 4-1/2 skylite's drilled and bushed to get a better roll.

J.D did you get my E-Mail ?

Tim build lite espicaly in th tail group, I would use lots of lighting holes, as long as you alow three times the material thichnes from the edge of the hole to the edge of the material, you will not reduce the strengh. In the tail group I use gorilla glue and ca's caution if you use gorilla glue use it vary sparingly, try some samples, its as strong as epoxy and half the weight, but it takes longer to set/dry

Just got my cowl today from Fiberglass Specialties--coming through again. Has the partially opened cooling flaps on it and is a fine piece of craftsmanship, well worth the 45 bucks. Part #TF-20-B for those interested. Shipped pretty much immediately.

you got a link to post for the cowl?......

FYI....

actually getting ready to pin some wood down to the plan. I am inclined to start with the fuselage (would start with the wing, but don't have the retracts yet). I know this is out of order according to the TF instruction book, but feel the fuse is the main piece that everthing attaches to. Hope to post pics soon to get us rolling....

rt3232-sorry did not get your email but glad your pictures came through on RCU. Did you use a brazing technique on the homemade exhaust? I'm interested in your materials and method.

Just received a DVD Aerofile from qualityrcproducts.com. Incredible closeup pictures of all the important details on the Corsair. One item that surprised me was the wing root air intake-you can see the other side (back) of the screen when looking up at the bottom of the wing. This open channel was obviously the source of the famous whistle.

Only problem with the DVD is that it doesn't give you a written description of what you are looking at. Or how much of this particular airplane has been modernized. Or any of its history.

Progress so far: More research! Considered purchasing a 1/48th plastic model (Tamiya) to give me a 3d picture of how the details come together. This may be going off the deep end but I'm trying to take my building to the next level.

Considering the Evolution 58 engine because of its rear exhaust and carb. My goal of a quiet gasser with scale outline might be helped by this configuration. Still gathering info on that.

hi guys about the muffler I just knew I did not want to go out the bottem, so started looking for some one to make a custom t/t several at Toledo 2005, with one shop in florida, found a local machinestwho would build from a mock up so built one out of balsa, he looked at and said come back in two weeks, as it turned out he found some alum extrusion at theright width the hight was about 1/8 short, the rest is weldable flat stock and tube mtl, all the tubes were long so that I could fit them inside as I saw fit, they go in till they tuch a wall then I beveled them to alow about 1/8 clearnce, took all the peaces to awelder that I know, sat down and in about half hour I had my muffler, I did not change the mounting method just used grade eight bolts and hi temp lock nuts. All I will say about the price it was vary right as prices I had gotten earler were double.. we are having lighting so will close for now

bob t didn't go back and check spelling

Hey nice thread Bossman.I don`t know if you guys realize this but there is an update to that G.S manual.I eventually will pick up that kit too.I`ve got the manual for the g.s kit now,and there are a few things that I`ll do to the big kit, that I`ve done to the 1:8,size.JUST a matter of uping the size, and mainly to do with the wing, wheel opening, hinging, and strut cover.much of it before sheeting in the wing bottom.I know that R T wants to know how I did those cover installs. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. A person can always improve on,or reject an idea to suit themselves. D.B

Bossman, the cowl isn't posted yet on the website at www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com but you can email Craig from the site to get one. Here's a pic of mine. I knew that Stan's had one, before I got this one, but couldn't get an answer to my email messages and ended up happy that I stuck with fiberglass specialties as they've given me about 5 different great pieces of fiberglass including this one.

To be closer to scale, main wheels should be at least 5" and to be absolute scale should be bigger. Using the wing as the datum for scale factor, full size =40.9' or 41', I've seen both listed but doesn't really matter at this scale, TF-86.5".

(40.9x12)/86.5 = 5.67
(41x12)/86.5 = 5.69

Full size mains were ~32"

(32/5.67)=5.64”
(32/5.69)=5.64”

So 5 1/2 would be closer to scale but I think that would push it in trying to get the wheels in the wing. Even 5 1/4, if you can find them, might not fit.

Good point rccamp. As long as we're on the subject, I've seen WW2 Corsair pictures where some tire treads are diamond pattern and others are normal straight treads. I'm just guessing but would diamond be correct for a land-based Marine F4u1a? Or was the tire used whatever was available at the time. thanks, Jim.

JDHammer,

I don't think I have an absolute answer to that question. But, I don't think (I haven't seen any pictures of such anyway) the diamond tread came into use until Korea. So for the -1A it would have straight tread. If you have seen some pics of WWII Corsairs with diamond pattern, I'd like the reference if possible. I've only seen diamond on -4, -5 in Korean war pics. Now admittedly, some -4s made into WWII at the very end, so.... maybe. But -1A I don't think so. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'll go check some of my documentation now.

Have a good day.
