Bob,

There is a line on the plan but it is no where near the notch in the two formers that are joined in the middle to accept the bottom section of the LE of the Fin. Here is a picture of what it looks like. If I change it to his line I would be way out of the notch and accually not even on the top of the fuse. I know it sounds weird but I think Don put that notch there with the offset built in or he is losing his mind. Heres what I came up with because he didn't even take into consideration that the crutch was in the way of the LE to go down into it's notch. I also wanted to strengthen that area. From the last picture it appears that by putting the LE in the notch there is a 2 deg offset to the right. What does it look like to you?

What I see in the pic's #4 don't look right to me, So I will try to explaine if the virtical line in the blkd is right then it looks like the fin and stab are rotated to the left a bit and I don't see any right offset. I am not sure I am explaining thing to well, the pic' over in you thread look better.
After checking the " Vought Heartage" site and all six lines for F4U hear is the way I would establish the line thru the bird from the vary center of the firewall thru the bird to a point right at the bottom of the tailcone is the correct horizontal line. this is the most important line and is used for all outher measurements and angles, looking down the fin should have 2 deg's of right (you may have to trim things a bit to get it right) Then on the stab it has to have 11/4 degs of positive incidence (leading edge will be up) the wing should have 2deg's of positive incidence and the engine 3 deg' down, and to get this size bird to fly right these have to be spot on.

If you don't have a incidence gage I would get at least 1, tower has them as well as hanger 9, you could also use a good drafting protracter

You can check all of these by going to Google, Vought Heartage, line dwgs, scroll down to F4U I am sure you know the drill

Hope this helps

Bob,

I ordered a Robart incidence meter. That way I'll know I'm as you say "spot on"! Now I'll let you guys get back to your Top Flite Giants. I hope to see one up close someday. I'll be checking at meets.

Thanks for the help,

Barry

Hi Guys,
While I'm waiting for my stencils, I figure I 'd put my cockpit in place, although not a 100% complete needs a little tweaking but, gaining on it.

Berry,

In regard to your alignment with your bird. (incidence, offset, squarness...ect) I agree with everything Bob said...I would however like to add and reinforce from my opinion. As bob said you need a point of reference as a starting point. In this case you would use two reference lines from that point one in the horizontal and one in the verticle. This is some what obvious. One thought I had for creating a reference line would be a laser level. You can pick them up real cheap nowadays.....just a thought. Also the more accurate the measuring device the better you will be. Use digital levels if you can. Then the more measuing and leveling you do the better off you will be....hence Bobs suggestion of 2 incedence meters for the wing. Last I would say make sure you have enough room to step back and eyeball it after it is measured up. Many times especially on smaller planes where a small measurement tolerance make a big difference and you can't hardly measure accurately enough and an eyeball never lies!

Hay Devens

I think Barry got a robart with the long bar so hopefully he is on the right track, you just have to lurk about in his 1/4 scale don smith build thread.

How are you comming with your bird ? close to a maiden ?

Now if the days off and the weather will just geet in sink, it could be a fun season.

Hi guys,

Progress has slowed now that flying has started up our way. I have completed the belly pan and have started the tedious process of installing the flaps. I am using long offset hinges from Tamjets...a little more involved to install than Robart hinge points but they look good and work great. I wiil be constructing a slip plate between the middle flap and the inboard flap from G10. The middle flap will actuate the inboard flap. I am hoping to deploy the flaps like Pappy 883 (last pic)....maybe by the weekend.....

Bob,

Progress has been slow but I am still chipping away. The next step is glass. I recently moved to Illinois from South Dakota...guess I need to update my profile. I am living in Decatur, IL. I am 40 minutes from the Champaign field. I flew there last Sunday with my uncle. It was great. He is building a TF GS P47 and is just a little ahead of me. We hope to fly together at some shows when we finish. I am meeting some of the heli pros and am excited to meet some of the other "famous guys". The good news is my shop is up and running and I have an awesome biulding area....my whole basement. I have a paint booth area and a heli area and storage...it is great. Anyway I also have a new digital camera so look for some awesome pics!

devens,

I can't seem to find a laser level anywhere that I've looked. Everywhere I looked they have very large ones for home construction. I tried Menards, Home Depot, and Farm and Fleet without any success. Give me a direction to go and what brand to buy.

Thanks,

Barry
