Good looking job Winston!

I've had good luck with having a sign printer make adhesive transfers for me. They can be 1 color (cheaper) or 4 color (more expensive) and they can even be printed on transparent film if that's necessary. They are harder to put on since you only get one chance but a little painters tape usually fixes that problem. When I get mine printed and decide where I want to put it, I trim out the "decal" and then using painters tape to mask around the area. I then spray the area with a glossy sealer since the "decal" sticks much better to glossy, after it's on and I'm satisfied I spray the decal with a matte type spray. That may sound like a lot of work but it works for me and it looks great! I'm sure this is not the only way and may not be the best way but it's my way and it's worked!

Hey Bob,

No time for a maiden has been set. I have temporarily set my Corsair aside because I'm working on a 4 Star 40 with my son. It's going to be an electric since that's all his college allows in their dorm. He started a TF 60 size Spitfire but we set that aside too after we found out that he couldn't bring it to school. The 4 Star seemed to be a quick build and with the mods (I built a 60 size before) it looks pretty good. But it's no Corsair!

I'll get you the contact info for my sign guy but it's just a Signs Now (or Signs Etc) that I found in the yellow pages. I send them an Illustrator EPS file but I'm sure they take other file types. If you need help I was a graphic designer (and a owner of a large graphics business) before my stroke. I'm left with only one good hand now so I'm slow but I'm still pretty good, good enough anyway.

I've been stalled one mine for a few weeks. The finishing resin I got from tower is bad. (Great Planes) I ordered two sets and both where bad. After two weeks it is finnaly starting to harden up but, it is still tacky. After calling Tower they sent out two more bottles. It was the same. (I'll call them again .)

Most of the fuse is covered with some G/P resin I had from the last plane and it was / is perfect. Only the bottom of the fuse and stabs are covered in the defective resin so maybe be it want be to big of a headache.

Guess I'll try some Zap.

[/quote]

You are kidding me? So if the resin doesn't harden then the plane is ruined?

I can't stand Tower Hobbies. I bet they will have 1000 excuses!

Thunderbolt47 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (7/28/2008 10:01:02 PM)

Hey Devens, Beleive it or not the G/P resin has finally cured. Took about 3 weeks.

Tower was very supportive, they send me two new bottles but they were bad too. I think G/P just got a bad batch.

David

I know it is a little late to change horses but look up West Systems it is comercial grade epoxy comes with measuring pumps or can be measured on a digital scale a bit spendy but having used it on my 47 I don't think I will change

devens -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (7/30/2008 3:36:17 AM)

I use ZAP. I know it must be 68.5 deg F to cure. I usually put a 1000W halogen flood on it to make sure everything is nice and warm

Thunderbolt47 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (7/30/2008 10:17:28 AM)

I have some Zap on the way.

Fogot to mention I have just enough room to get the skins for the fin in the fuse, so maybe will get this bird back in the air next week

DaddySam -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/6/2008 5:20:22 AM)

Some progress today and yesterday. How come we all can't wait till our planes are done to put them together and take pictures of them? Beats me, but here's mine so far. I only have a couple of peices of wood left so I must be about done. I still have a ways to go but she's taking shape!
Sam

Tomcat_104 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/6/2008 4:32:20 PM)

DaddySam,

Looking real good!

Yeah, that's the way I build, when all the wood is gone I'm through. The problem usually is I think I'm done and I still have a couple of pieces left so after much thought I throw them out and then I'm afraid to fly the plane![:D][:D][:D]

I use Z-Poxy from Pacer Industries and it completely cures in 24 hours. It's very nice to work with. Plus it sand sooooo easy!!!! Where is a good source for fowler flaps?

Looking good Sam

Bob hows the repair going

Barry try here http://www.aero-accessories.com/P-47/P-47index.html are you building another plain with your corsair ?

NCIS -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/7/2008 12:56:20 AM)

Winston,

No, I thought the fowler flap hinges would work well on my Corsair's flaps. Am I mistaken? I've never used them before.

Barry

rt3232 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/7/2008 2:18:05 AM)

Winston

Repair on the fin and rudder are all done except a coupla of decals my LHS is closed down for some reason so waiting on order from tower, will post a pic when the decals are on.

Barry

I would not use a fowler hinge on a corsair as it did not have that type of flap, and for your size of bird (I would have to do some research) but I think I would make my own, G-10 5/32 thick and a s/s 4-40, bolt with a stop nut with brass tubing for a bushing. there some great ideas in corsair jock's thread .60 T/F corsair mods I think was the title also smugater did scale hinges to you might pm him

Hope this helps

Bob T

cimara -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/7/2008 3:04:39 AM)

Barry i dont think these are big enough but you might be able to use them for a pattern http://s43500.sites99.storefront-hosting.com/detail.aspx?ID=800

DaddySam -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/7/2008 6:01:20 AM)

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Yes Bob, I've got the gear doors cut out and I'm just getting up the nerve to try gluing the hinges in and seeing if they will operate. I'm thinking I'll use mini servos like Wulf did on his. I still need to final sand some of the contours near the tail and then fill dings and fiberglass the fuse. Then lay up tail wheel doors and an access hatch.

Question: would there be enough room under the fuel tank access hatch area (where the retract air supply bottle is) to mount switches/fillers? I'm thinking there would be but I really don't want to cut it open and then find that there is not........

Then of course there will be a cockpit, but not a museum peice, and a pilot. I'm still toying with the idea of a sliding canopy, but man that is a project all by itself.

I'll post some more progress soon. Keep those progress/flight reports coming!
Sam

rt3232 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/7/2008 12:23:32 PM)

Sam

Sounds like you have a plan and things are comming along great, and as I recall there is not enough room between the air tank and the skinn to put in the switch and stuff,

To early in the morining to think, sorry I can't give you a good suggestion

Bob T

wulf190 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/7/2008 6:42:49 PM)

I agree w/ Bob on the lack of room for switches and valves up there Sam. I just put everything on the bottom of the fuse in front of the wing dowel hold down plate and behind the cowl. I couldn't find a scale hatch location that would really lend itself well for the room required and what needed to go into it, so just stuck them there. You could probably cut out the hatch that was up front behind the cowl, but the box that is internal to the skin for the tank and the engine mount setup would probably limit access there as well....that was my second choice and got the kabosh for limited access as well. All the stuff is out of sight when it's on the ground on mine though, and there is certainly enough space to put all of the little things up front where I did, so that's where they ended up for me. Your plane's looking good. Keep on truckin.

Mike

Hi All

Was reading on the multi foram 'Timithy Thompsons" B-17 thread some vary sad news Tim died last month in his sleep, his skill for scale will be greatly missed.
He was a corsair brother, and while building his g/s bird was a frequent poster.

Just thought you would like to know.

Cheers Bob T
