Gear Door Progress and Problems
I used some hinges from Sonic Tronics to mount the main doors. I used the templates so generously provided by Mike (Wulf190). Gary made the skins for me, so the quality of the glass was fantastic. The troubles began when I used a scale door template for the front strut cover. When I went to extend the strut, I found that the door opening was too short and narrow at the leading edge. I found that the TF template on the plans was closer to what I needed to allow the strut to extend fully. I then hinged the strut covers with a section of bicycle inner tube fastened with Flex Zap and brass strips and screws. Next will be to attach the strut cover to the strut lower down so that the cover can allow the strut to move up and down. Here are some pix, and you can see the problem and the solutions.
Sam

Sam

Your progress on the gear doors looks good[sm=thumbs_up.gif], have you decided on strut attachement??

your plane is very beautiful!

Where have you purchased your propeller? It is a propeller for a static display or is it functional?

Good luck for the future ;)

To all,

What a great thread. Tons of info and pictures of works of art. I have just picked up my own giant scale Corsair kit and will be building it with a friend of mine. We have seen pictures of retractable wings (modification of the kit) but cannot find them again. Does anyone recall where they my be? Also, is the RCUniverse thread search capability off or is it me? It seems that just about anything that I type in the lower right hand side search box essentially comes up with nothing. Am I missing something?

Is anybody doing the F4U-7 version of the Corsair? They were quite different and there were only 80 made. Matter of fact the last 80 made. They were for the French Navy. I make making many changes on my 1/4 scale Corsair for it to replicate one that is being flown by a woman and is totaly refurbished. Heres her plane. The one above is nice but it needs more mod's. I still like it though.

Corsair Brotherhood #4 I think. I don't post here very much but I still love Corsairs and had a TF Giant but sold the kit to get the bigger one.

I would be interested in joining the corsair club. I am building my first corsair and decided to make the wings fold and am stuck as to how to make it hinge. I have seen alot of pictures but none showing clear detail on the front hinge or any instructions on exactly how to do it. If there is anyone out there that can point me in the right direction I would appreciate any and all help that can be given. Everyone in my club tells me it can't be done but I know it can. Mike

cdohaney -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/23/2008 6:27:53 PM)

Well, I have enjoyed a lot of flying time this summer here, the weather has been great and recently finished up repairing the wing fold servo. Also, a minor glitch in fold electronics was solved by Buz Hampton of OSA, thanks Buz. I have finished sheeting the outer wings and now have the fold sequenced with Oregon Scale Aviations Wingman Ultra. It works great. A short video of the fold is posted here...Sheeted wing Fold.. Now on to the gear doors!

To Mike Goodey. An awesome undertaking to fold the wing but lots of great guys to help out. Pappy883 (Joe Harter) and Mort Rosenthal were a great help to me. Joe posts on this forum. I have another video detailing the fold mechanics here...Wing Mechanics.. Also our club website has a Gallery section where I have been posting pics of my build.www.bsgflyers.org. Look under Chris Dohaney is the Gallery page. There are no fixed plans for this just a lot of experimentation and head scratching. Good Luck!

Chris

NCIS -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/23/2008 6:59:38 PM)

Chris,

I wish I could of done that on my 1/4 scale but the wing is just to heavy for it to work. Plus the loading would be to much for it. Your folding wing looks great. It is sooo coool!!!

Barry

cdohaney -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/23/2008 8:15:47 PM)

Thanks barry,

I bet the linear actuators available shown here Servo City Actuators would be a great place to start a 1/4 scale foldiong system!

Chris

NCIS -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/24/2008 12:42:17 AM)

George,

What paint and what color did you use on your bird?

Winston,

Your bird is looking unbelievable. Great workmanship. I only wish I had your talent.

Chris,

Thanks but it's to late for that now plus the main spar on mine goes past the folding area by about 6". Maybe next time I will do something like that but I think this is my last Corsair unless it crashes. Next is the 1/4 scale P-40 that I'll have to blow Ziroli plans up to build from. That one will be from scratch. I'm going to just buy the wood and cut everything out myself.

Great work everybody and all your birds look great.

Barry
