Mike this might help you on the wing fold mech s post # 60 by smugator Earl Aune has plans for the Brian talor corsair wich is close in size to the Topflight corsair you might be able to tinker with that to get it to work. At leased it would give you a good starting point its post # 60 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7335038/mpage_3/key_/tm.htm#7354636

Thunderbolt47 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/24/2008 10:16:29 AM)

OK guys, just chiming in agian. The fuse is glassed and sanded. The wing is Glassed and half sanded. Just the flaps are left to do.

Also working on the cockpit. I'm not going crazy scale in there but I am having fun. I used the old oil jug trick to make a seat. First time trying that. Looks pretty darn good. Also had lot's of fun on the dash. I'm still [:D][:D] on that one. (details coming) I 've got my Valley Aviation pilot in position. Still got to make the side controls and do the upper dash. (ie gun site.)

Trying to figure out how to strap my pilot in. Maybe some seat belts made with velcro.

Should be ready for some primer in a few weeks. Yeehaaw
Kelly

Thunderbolt47 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/24/2008 3:43:54 PM)

OK Details,
Pic# 1 Dash panel. 1/64 ply covered with aluminum tape and sprayed flat black. Then I scuffed it with 400 grip sand paper. Then layed it over the sticker and screwed it down.

Pic# 2Temporary install.

Pic#3 The oil jug seat with an airline split and slipped over the edge. That will get painted of coarse.

The other a re self explanatory[:D]

George,

What were the other colors and makes of paints that you used? Sorry for so many questions. I just like your bird and think it is as close to the real thing as possible.

Hi Barry

I would like to offer a paint suggestion for a bird your size you will need a lot of model master paint as I believe it only comes in 2oz bottles, So I would look at nelson or war bird paints as both come in larger sizes, there for a more reasonable coast, and both are great paints.

My personal choice is nelsons as it is non toxic water clean up and they can and will match any color you whant I have used the nelsons, and it is vary frindly.

Just my 2 pennys worth.

Here's a few more goodies. Gunsight and dashboard.

The screws will get painted too.

Yes that's dirt on the dash. I dropped it on the floor (butterfingers). When the paint hardens , it will get scuffed more.

The dash is 1 sheet of 1/64 taped to the fuse and a another sheet of 1/32 CA'ed to the top. That makes it stay curved.
Just need to make the side controls and that will be all I'm doing to the Cockpit.
Later Guys,
Kelly

A couple of pics of my FTE radial. I finished out the cylinder which was cut away for cooling purposes. It can be set back in place for static display or photos.

aceisback -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/30/2008 9:10:53 AM)

I have never uploaded pictures before, so hopefully they show up. I spent about 6 months off and on building my TF giant Corsair. I used lots of tips and info found in this thread. Anyway, crashed the bird on it's very first flight due to some failure. I think the engine either lost power or quit totally as the Corsair flipped and spun to the ground. I am building another one as only the airframe was totaled, all the gear and electronics were ok.

Here are the before and after pics if I did this right:

Gary,
The FTE radial looks great. Dose it come with all the "little pieces" to finish it off??

Aceisback,
Nice looking Corsair. Sorry to see she went in on Maided[&o]

Pete

GaryM -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/30/2008 3:29:53 PM)

Rocketman, you only get the basic dummy radial which is made from epxoy casting resin. It is very cheap to finish out. The pushrod tubes or 1/8 aluminum tubing, some red wire from old busted servo extension leads and the spark plug boots are the inner portion of some sulivan nyrods. I already had the rust-oleum flat black and slate blue which would have only been 3.00 each. To get the weathered look on the crank case I ground up some pencil lead and rubbed it in to the paint when it was still just a little draggy.
Oh I forgot you do need some 1/8 plywood to make the support ring which attaches to the rear of the cylinders then to the cowl.

Gary

Thunderbolt47 -> RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair (8/30/2008 8:03:40 PM)

Ace, Sorry about your plane. It looked very nice.

Gary, Are you going to put ply. behind the other cylinders? They really need blocking off. Only the very bottom one need to be open.

Later guys.
Update on the priming later tonight.

Kelly
