Default RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair

Well guys I have been in and out of this thread for I would say a year now and this is my first post. I bought my Giant Corsair kit in June 2008 when I was getting out of the Navy. I am starting it hopefully in the next few weeks I have the plans on the board and I plan on posting pictures throughout the process. I work and go to college full time for mechanical engineering so the build will most likely be slow, oh and I forgot I am married so that speaks for itself as far as time consuming. Anyways I hope to grab one of daddy sams tailwheels and maybe the Robart retracts I am not sure yet, but I did have a question for you guys. I have everything I need for building as this is my second build (well not everything there are many things I want) but as far as moving my project along where should I spend the first chunk of money inorder to speed up the build? Retracts, Engine, Servos, etc I am trying to go about this discretely as my wife is not to keen on spending thousands on an airplane haha. Thank you Very much and I hope to become a brother at some point!

Henry

With this kit wieght is your enemy so think lite shoot for 28 lbs or less
In my opion
befor you start the fuss
Plan your modes way ahead of your self
Air system, fuel tank (depending on engine) sized for how long you generaly fly + 2 minute's
servo's
switch harness's (hd)only
Engine
battery

Wing
Again Plan your mods
extra ac ply L/G door ribbs
some good Maple for extended G/rails
C/F (to reinforce gull laminate)
hinge points

Tail group (AGAIN THINKLITE)

Most of all have fun with your build

FTmustang65......Welcome to the build....... I built mine 4 years ago and still am enjoying it....in fact today I just finished a mod...I turned mine into F4u-4...by adding the chin scoop and the side exhaust stacks .........mods are a lot more difficult after the plane is finished......but we are modelers and we can do anything ( RIGHT ? )......

OK.. to suggest where to start....I started on the wing first....All you will need is the Robart retracts for your first investment and you can complete the wing....having the retracts handy sure helps to get the fit right...their less expensive than the engine at this point depending on your choice....and you can take your time building....IF you start with the fuse you will need the engine .........having the engine handy will also help to complete.

Its your choice but if your going to build slow....and are concerned about cost at this time I think the wing would be a good place to start....RCPILOT78

Guys thanks a lot for the information I can see this forum is going to be a huge help. I plan on starting maybe next week or the week after I have to get my GP cub completely finished before I start the corsair. I am going to order my retracts today and start on the wing. I plan on installing gear doors, performing the corsairjock mod, and maybe a couple of other small mods. My overall goal is to come up with a paint scheme that looks like the one in the picture I have attahced. I want to glass it and have a friend of mine airbrush it. Thanks again

Welcome Henry!
I seem to remember a headline from 1944 that went something like "Japs Attack LA City Limits" that tied to the pilot of that aircraft.

I'm taking a look at the TF Giant Corsair as a scale project. Does anyone have a pdf of Chris Sparrenberg's article in High Flight on the Corsair and the mods he did to make it more scale? I'd certainly appreciate it if anyone has the article available for email.

Excellent thread, gentlemen!

Scott I believe the pilot was Doris C.Freeman I will try to find the article and thank you for the welcome I am glad to be in the brother hood.
On a second note what do you all think the average cost of building this corsair is?

Dorin I have the original magazine I bought on ebay in 2008 it was brand new I will see if I might be able to scan it I will PM you.

Hey Guys, I know its been awhile but I finally got everything else fixed, so back to the Corsair.

Here are a few pics of my progress. I've gotten all the new ribs cut out. Luckly i have another kit and was able to copy the rib patterns.
I had to remove most of the main spar all the way to rib #4. I used plywood to reattach the new spar. This will get a carbon rod inserted in it for strenght.
This isn't going to be as bad a job as I feared but it's hard to find enjoyment out of a needless repair.[]
I will update you guys as I make progress. However this will take a little while with little one on the move now. plus I need to call BalsaUSA for some more wood.
Kelly

Yes Bob that was a few months ago. The rotator in the gear broke and the wheel turned on landing. Being everyone said to beef up the basswood mounting rails, I DID. So it took the whole spar out and the wing with it. THe landing was perfect, but the gear was damaged (not know at the time) by a run in with a soybean field a few week earlier. (long story)
I believe it woud have been better to just let the rails fail next time

Don, I scanned the mag this morning into pdf files but each file is 3mb so I need to figure out how to downsize them I could probably compress them and put them in an email why dont you pm me with your email.

Kelly, I will get it I just need to figure out the size thing.

Guys here is a question I have been pondering on I have a futaba 7C 2.4ghz system and I wanted to use this for my corsair but I am afraid 7 channels will not be enough I have not dug to far into it yet but I am just curious on how many channels you guys use in your corsair's? Thanks

With The Choke servo 7. However I am use 8 total with the duel elavator slaved together. With a matchbox or simular unit, 7 channels is a plenty.

Guys
What is the general consensus for size fuel tanks,
I'm looking to use a 32 oz with my G 62 will it fit ? (RT I plan on flying for more than 8 minutes)

Thanks in advance,

George #1

I am burnning about 1.5 oz. per minute in the air at 2 clicks off full bore after take off, and a 16oz tank gives me right a 11 minute at full bore on the ground, and the 62 in my 47 bouns a little less but not much, I think a lot depends on how well your engine is broken in and how it is tuned but 24 oz. should be plenty

Hope this helps

Cheers Bob T

Was out today doing landing drill and my thumbs still are not good enough to fly the Corsair or the 47 maybe another day of drills and I will give it a go.

I run my G-62 very hard. I'm a speed freak. With 24ozs it goes silent at 12 1/2 minutes.

A couple clicks off of full trottle is a lot of fuel savings.

BTW at Joe Nall I had to hold the pattern for several extra minutes while two bigger planes landed. Then the second plane spattered on the runway. after they cleaned it up I was sure glad I had 32ozs on board. I wouldn't go any less than 24ozs IMHO.

Here is a video of my two racing buddies. I fly with these guys alot. This is the way we fly. I'm the guy holding the yellow tail mustang with the black sheep shirt on. the red tail and yellow tail are doing 135 mph. I had just arrived so I didn't get in the air with them this go around.

I know, I know, They are Mustangs
