Hey Corsair builders...I'm getting ready to sheet the upper half of my Top-Flite Corsair and notice that it calls for the supplied 1/8" sheeting. The sheeting feels fairly heavy and is certainly strong...my question to you all is whether or not it would be beneficial weight-wise to use 5/32" (as is used on the wings) or would the weight savings be outwieghed by some loss of strength/rigidity. Or possibly 1/8" up front with 5/32" in the back. Anyone out there confronted this? Thanks.

My advice to you would be to sheet with the 1/8 " but get a lighter balsa. I do this often. If you change thickness, you'll get a "misfit" someplace, not worth the trouble... don't ask

Both wing and fuselage are entirely sheeted with 3/32 balsa.....Plus stab+fin and rudder with 1/16 balsa..

Thanks for the advice guys...I did lighten the tail structure but I do wish I had used a lighter balsa on the stab and rudder...If I get ambitious, I may take the sheeting off the stab and resheet with 1/16". As far as the fuse, I'll try to get some lighter 1/8" or more likely will do the whole thing in 3/32". (I mis-typed in my previous post...I said 5/32" but meant 3/32"...oops.). My build thread is under "Top Flite GS Corsair-Plug in wings".

Not my plane just building it for a guy. The plane is built to plans no changes other than cockpit and gear. Has a 3w 3w70 single glass cowl and will come out weighting a ton. have not had a chance to weight it yet to see how it comes out. I will not be the one that fly's this bird it will be up to the owner.
I have a hard time getting on these long threads so if I don't get timed out I could be back[8|
Larry K

It came 26lbs with out batteries, not as bad as I thought.

At my age I always try to have fun. Getting all the stuff to work is the hard part, landing gear and doors can give you the fits getting it to do what you want it to

If you are going to glass go for the 3/32 and the lightest on everything aft of the C/G, but on the rudder and V/fin use harder balsa, if you fly from grass, gofer hole can cause a nose over and you have a mess to tepair. don't ask how I know

rt3232,

That's good advice on the rudder...I did build a plywood spine in the rudder and the fin has the 1/8" balsa. The stab is heavier than I like. I may strip it and put some lighter balsa on it. Thanks for your help...this thread has been a great resource.

I used 3/32 on my Fuse because I had a nice supply of good stuff and the supplied 1/8' was hard and heavy. This mod did not seem to affect any fit issues. But, I did run into a problem.
The kit has widely spaced formers and only a few stringers and in the large unsupported areas the sheeting became more flat than round.  I had to put a few supports inside the fuse to push out these areas.
Had i known about this beforehand I would have added a few more 1/4" stringers down the fuse to help hold the shape.

Me410...That sounds like a good plan. The supplied 1/8" is hard and heavy. I'm going to pick up some 1/4" stringers and some light 3/32" this week at the hobby shop. Would you have added stringers to both the upper and lower half of the fuse? Thanks for the tip.

B-Squared .... I would add them  upper and lower,  might get away with adding two to each side.  Stiffer stronger balsa stringers may be better than soft bendy ones. If you add a few more, I don't think the wieght penalty will be too bad.   My worst areas were behind the cockpit area about halfway to the tail.

Well done. Try a G.S. P-47, they fly even better than the F4U. Top Flite is very good except for the non scale gear location. The Yellow Aircraft one is better.

Cheers,
